If you're looking for a continuous offense to run against a 2-3 zone defense, this offense is great to have in your arsenal. We use this offense against a 2-3 zone defense. Some of the keys to running this offense successfully is having your three guards on the perimeter in a triple threat stance rather than simply looking to pass.
This offense against a 2 3 zone is great for teaching youth, club teams, junior high, high school, and recreational teams.
The 2-3 zone defense is an alternative to man-to-man or match-up defensive strategy used in basketball. It is referred to as the 2-3 because of its formation on the court, which consists of two players at the front of the defense and three players closer to the basket.
The 2-3 zone is usually one of the first zone defenses coaches and players learn and deploy. That’s probably because of it’s intuitive nature and ease of learning. The two players on the top of the zone are typically the two guards; the shooting and point guards. They guard the area of the zone on the perimeter and three-point arc.
The forwards (3 and 4 players) guard the sides of the zone and the center (5 player) guards the lane and center of the zone. When your opponent moves the basketball around the court, the entire zone shifts to cover their designated areas in the zone. As the ball moves throughout the court, the defense shifts simultaneously in the direction of the ball.
Communication is probably the most important thing to remember when playing a 2-3 zone (or any zone defense). Every player needs to talk to each other on the court . Typically, the center acts as a defensive director in the 2-3 zone because they care able to see more of the court. They are always shouting who should be where, what the offense is doing, and acts as the eyes behind the heads of their fellow teammates.
Even though the 2-3 zone is a “zone” defense, every player on the court should always be aware of the where the offensive players are on the court. It’s critical that the defense move to guard an open player than stay within the normal constraints of the 2-3 zone with offensive players that are closer to the basket taking a high priority.
The strength of the 2-3 zone originates at the basket and radiates outward. It’s typically deployed against an opponent who is stronger/bigger inside and are poor perimeter shooters. A general goal of the 2-3 zone is to force the offense to take perimeter shots and prevent entry into the paint by pass or drives.
The 2-3 zone is a very effective defense when teams communicate and rotate properly. It’s generally true that the further away from the basket, the lower the chances of scoring. The 2-3 zone protects the key and is great at preventing penetration into the lane. Because of that, it’s forces perimeter shooting as an offense's most accessible option, thus lowering your opponents overall field goal shooting percentage.
There are some times when using the 2-3 zone would leave your team vulnerable. With the perimeter, especially the 33-point arc, wide open, teams that are great at 3-point shots and mid-range shots can easily dismantle the 2-3 zone. Teams don’t remain in a 2-3 zone for very long when their opponents start knocking down long range shots with ease and consistency. If you’re committed to staying in a zone, your might want to switch to a 3-2 zone against a good perimeter shooting team.
The 2-3 zone requires good communication, teamwork and trust. Every player must know exactly where to be at all times, where their teammates should be, and where their opponents are at all times. Zone defense is more complex than just chasing one player around the court and staying between them and the basket. If you practice all aspects of this zone and defend as one single unit on the court, your team will be formidable with this zone defense.

The way I overload is even more simple. I put 4 players on one side of the court. All 4 players are behind the three point line. One corner, one wing, one up top, and one screener. The screener's job is to constantly screen one of the defenders in the 2-3 zone in order to free up a three point shooter. The fifth player on the offense can roam from the low block to high post, both on the ball side. More than likely, when the fifth player gets the ball they will deliver a quick pass to one of the open perimeter players. The fifth player will also get rebounds if and when possible

This is a good idea for a secondary offense. I'm running a different motion offense for my youth team and once they are comfortable with this I will teach this as a secondary offense to change it up a bit.

i like the idea over the overload vs the zone and haveing 1 man on the defense guarding nobody. but i think there might be some better plays to run so the spacing is a little better

I like having better spacing and instead of 2 offensive players standing next to each other, having your better passer play high post where they can shoot pass or drive.

Thanks for the comment! We always teach and stress to our players the importance of engaging the defense while on the perimeter. Guards on the perimeter should assume a triple threat (pass, drive, shoot) position. You need to shoot the open shot once in a while to keep the defense honest. Hopefully, you have some decent shooters who can knock it down. Good luck, let me know if this post helps.

    Hey Nomer,
Thanks for the comment and input. This was one of the earlier post that didn't have the #'s in the offensive players. Newer post have included that. Great idea. Thanks!

If you have really strong opponent that you want to shut down yet still play zone defense, you can run a box-and-1. The zone defenders are on the elbows and the blocks playing a box zone. The 5th defender, your best lock down defender, should play a tight denial defense against they best player. That means, try to get the ball out of this players hands and not let him get it back. Good luck.

Hey +Russell Fukuimano - cheers for the vid. We have started running this with our team and tweaked a few things that have helped us greatly! Was wondering if you ever got to upload your "rotation" play that you mentioned below you use in tandem with this against a 2-3 zone.. interested to hear! Cheers

Another key essential to the play is fast, accurate passes that are faster than the defense. My coach taught how to use it and every time we got an open shot.

Sounds like you could run a 1-3-1 zone. The Zone and its movements are a little bit more complicated, but it puts a lot of pressure of the guards on the outside.

Against an opponent who runs a 2-3 zone for the entire game, we usually run "overload" a few times during the game and an offense we call rotation. It has a three guard top and a high and low post. Movement on the perimeter is guard to guard pass and screen away movement. When the ball is swung up top, the high post (HP) follows the ball, and when the ball is skipped or swung to the opposite guard, the HP moves to LP and we bring the LP to flash to the HP weak side. I'll post video later =)

Thanks. That's what we are trying to do. However, we got lots of trouble when our shooting guard gets cold. Is there an alternative ball movement?

  • @CoachRuss
    @CoachRuss  14 лет назад

For 4th and 5th graders this play might be a bit complicated because of the timing and screening. With limited size usually comes greater speed. Perhaps try getting your kids comfortable in scoring in transition and focus mainly on defense.
