    Got to admit that this was one of the great stories from that era. I was about 7 or 8 and despite it all being made out of rubber gloves and cardboard etc the robots and mining ship was quite convincing and the story very dramatic. Even watching it now the naff special effects by modern standards don’t detract from the episodes which have on DVD. If anything it just shows that before special effects went into the stratosphere they had to rely on proper acting, writing and directing to get the drama and the pulse racing. That’s timeless.

  • @richardgregory3684
    @richardgregory3684 Год назад +15

    The robot designs in this are just stunning, even more when you consider how limitted the budget was. I espescially like the way that the different robot models had different colour schemes: the simplest being the D (for Dumb) class being dark green with dull silver highlights and dark tunics, the most seen model being the more complex V class (Vocs who could speak), these having green faces with brighter silver highlights and light green tunics and the sophisticated SV (Super Vocs who could co-ordinate and command other robots and apparently make complex decisions and even judgements - of which there was only one on the Sandminer) having light green face with much more silver, and glittering silver highlights plus a silver tunic.

    Great story, using the studio sets to create a feeling of claustrophobia, the music and effects enhancing a seemingly effortless sinister mood throughout, and making the best use of a limited budget, like all the best Doctor Who. They knew how to make strong, slow-paced, creepy DW stories back then. The only real weak point is the failure to disguise which of the characters on the sand-miner was also the villainous Taren Capel, as it's obvious who it is the first time you see the electronically-treated face on the monitor screen. Sadly, if these beautifully-designed, well-written and subtly-acted robots were brought into the current show, they'd likely be "modernised" in some way and misused in terms of character and motivation, as happens so often in 21st century DW (such as the running Cybermen, and the Ice Warrior rethink that changed what they actually were from the classic stories).

    Dr who use to be so theatrical, like stage actors hamming it up, where they got maximum effect for minimal outlay.
    Then much later they used huge budgets and over polished performances to the point of them being far to clinical.
    Thus ending up equally as unconvincing as the earlier episodes, with dialogue delivered in an almost robotic form, free from any expression
