    If you take the crunch red setting and turn the drive all the way down, you get a classic Marshall tube tone.

      no,actually you do not.i own a marshall and what you get from good old line sux is a plastic fake sounding fart with no life,no harmonic overtones and its flat and lifeless,sorry dont go down that rabbit hole.

    i have the 150w head and 412 cab of this, and i play probs 2 gigs a month of varying size audience/venues, and varying styles. this amp actually gigs pretty darn well once you figure out your base sounds as rob said, and get the right tones for what youre playing. i play varying stuff from metal to blues to old school rock and this performs great for the range of tones i need

    As a digital warrior with 32 years of pro playing experience (it's my only job, no day job, playing live and tons of work in my home studio), I appreciate that even though you're a traditionalist, you don't seem nearly as stubborn and closed minded as most. I really appreciate your open mindedness and apparent desire to be neutral and subjective. I've encountered so much snobbery against all my digital modeling equipment which I love and transitioned into being completely digital (Variax into a Helix and now a Spider IV 75 as a backup/practice amp).
    For those looking for advice, I can only say try it yourself and see what YOU think. Music equipment is one of the most subjective and snob-filled areas you will find and you are going to find a ton of people who tell you to stay away from this gear and it sucks, etc. I vehemently disagree. Don't succumb to peer pressure or worry about people thinking you're not cool or use crappy gear. Play what YOU love. A LOT of classic tones on your favorite records would be considered "crappy" tones by snobs if you were using it. It's all subjective and there is no right or wrong or one size fits all. If there's one particular sound you love, then go for it. If you love playing with all the flavors you can and colors there are then the digital revolution can't be beat. I'm never going back to non-modeling gear.
    Remember: no matter how much people might try to convince you, opinions are not facts. They are just opinions.

      just because tube amps are expensive doesn't justify getting a line6. plenty of cheap options in the used market or hybrid amps or digital amp simulations like positive grid bias, ect.

    • @ukmanthailand
      @ukmanthailand 8 лет назад

      Would you say that amps like this one are still worth considering when buying a first modelling amp or have they been superseded with better, more advanced equipment in the last 7 years?

    • @Brabdo
      @Brabdo 8 лет назад

      ukmanthailand no, there are many better options. And the options will only get better as digital simulation gets better. Even the new line6 products are hardly convincing and poorly priced.

    • @HeathAllyn
      @HeathAllyn 8 лет назад +1

      +ukmanthailand Don't listen to the naysayers. Listen with your own ears. I'd say yes. I know plenty of (pro) players still very happy with older Line 6 gear. That being said, of course each generation gets better and better. ''Tis the nature of the beast. Anyone who says they can tell the difference between a current digital model and the real thing in a blind A/B test is psychologically biased. As has been proven with actual blind A/B tests.
      Plug into one, and see if it moves you to play. That's the most important. Just know that you will absolutely encounter tons of gear snobs warning you away.
      And for full disclosure, no I do not work for Line 6. Just a long time very happy user since their very first products. And yes, playing music is my job.

      Thanks for your reply. I'm looking for a hybrid or solid state amp to use at home, preferably with a 12-inch speaker. I used to use a Marshall when I gigged in my youth but I don't want to spend the money on a decent valve amp quite yet (only recently started playing again).

    The debate rages on. I've been playing for over 40 years, and I finally got me a tube amp. A super-cool '65 Epiphone Futura. 50 Watts and 4 -10" speakers. Original 2-button footswitch, real spring reverb and tremelo. I love it. I paid 450 for it and for another 500 I could have somebody I don't know replace all of the 50 year old capacitors, plate resistors, and crumbling wiring so it doesn't sound like a skillet full of frying bacon. THEN buy a few pedals for God-knows how much and a pedal board and a power supply....you get the picture. So for 650, I got a Spider IV 150 with 2-12"s. All the volume, effects, and tones I could ever want.I prefer concentrating on my musicianship than screwing around with outdated technology.

    I gigged this amp for one gig. When I cranked it, everyone laughed at me and I was booed of stage. My girlfriend then left me as a result. My friends hated me because my tone was shit, I tried to get a tube amp but the damage was done - no one trusted me anymore. I got depressed and couldn't keep up with my mortgage repayments and lost my house. I am writing this from an internet cafe. This amp ruined my life.

    Tremendous review Rob. I've been using Line 6 for years now (Pods) which is DI'd straight into my soundcard. What i have been craving is having an amp which will produce my sounds/tones at home without upsetting my neighbor (and crank it when i want to). I toyed with the idea of the Orange Dark Terror, Mesa, Engl to get the tube sound at reasonable volumes, but when you way up what these cost against the Spider IV (which is loaded with all the effects i use on a regular basis, ie reverb, chorus, flanger etc) it became a no brainer that the Spider was the way to go. I purchased said amp (75 Watt) for a mere £200 (New) and within a couple of hours i dialed in a great Metal/ Rock tone and i have to say i'm really impressed and it sounds fantastic when you start cranking it up (a fine balance needed between the channel and master volume). Basically for what this amp cost it's worth every penny. I'd also say the 75 Watt Model is loud enough to play in a band/ small gigs without the need for a PA. :)

      no,actually you do not get anything resembling useable guitar tone from this piece of shit.you do understand they have 1.5,10,15 watt tube amplifiers,you get that right?i own a marshall and what you get from good old line sux is a plastic fake sounding defecation with no life,no harmonic overtones and its flat and lifeless,sorry dont go down that rabbit hole.your tone deaf,i get it.the rest of us arent,chappers was paid for this

    I just bought one used for $40, It is leaps and bounds better than my Boss Katana!! This amp is very easy to use and if you want to get technical you can hook it to your computer and Line6 has expansion effects for free online. People hate on the Spider amps all the time and I think its because they actually do what they say the will do! Great amp for guitarist that just play at home for fun, I am guessing that would be the majority of us.

    I have the 120 and it slays. The main thing with these amps is you HAVE to get the pedal boards. Even if its the small one. You can't enjoy this amp to the fullest potential without it. Some people bitch about the distortion not pushing hard enough but chances are their using crappy pickups. Mine slays with a pair of EMG's.....And the 120 is so god damn loud you could play a small gig without turning it up past 5 lol people pushing it anywhere past 5 are stupid. You typically mic up small shows anyways there's no need for a half stack. If your playing iron maiden gigs then sure lol but for 99.99 percent of players these amps do us justice for a good price. All the reviewers on here and commenters saying it gets muddy at high volumes literally will never EVER have the need to push one of these amps to that level to where it becomes sloppy. Me and my other guitarist both use 120's and it gets the job done fine. In fact the Crate and Peavey amps sit in the corner and just stare at us and collect dust lol

    • @TheCampbell254bme
      @TheCampbell254bme 8 лет назад

      hell yeah man. you can jam with it. as long as you got that foot pedal and a good pair of pickups in your guitar you will be perfectly happy. dont listen to the negative comments they just don't know how to use it

    • @TheCampbell254bme
      @TheCampbell254bme 8 лет назад

      yup the 81/85 is what I got and I really enjoy playing with this amp. You can actually get a really nice tone with seymour duncan hot rails with the line 6, especially if you like an iron maiden type sound.

    i have a spider iv head into a 4x12 fender mustang cab. it is all i wanted in an amp. i grew up in the age of pedals...$100 here $200 there...this thing has it all built in and it is amazing. i don't care what anyone says i can get any sound i want from this setup. i love the fact i don't need 100 pedals...it is all very consolidated and easy to use with the fbv shortboard mk2. that makes all the difference. are tube amps awesome? shit yea. are they a pain in the ass? shit yea. big upkeep. i am a minimalist and like zero maintenance. nothing to break on this thing.

    I recently purchased a Fender Mustang I V2 and after having it 3 days it got this nasty hum that wouldn't go away. It was surprisingly loud for a practice amp. I'm just now learning guitar so I don't know much about them yet. The Fender is similar to the Spider lots of presets and also download Fuse and get loads of presets others have made (for free btw). The only prob for me though was the fact that none of the preset tones sounded right to me. I had a real cheap 15w amp that came with my guitar bundle that had overdrive and a regular very clean tone that I actually liked more than any the Mustang had. Of course I never got a chance to go through the millions of other presets,tones, pedals that could be loaded from a pc/mac and saved directly into the amp bc of the hum that WOULD NOT go away. So I took it back and bought the Spider IV 75 watt. It sounded better from just what I heard in the store than the Fender preset tones. I really liked the video I hope I enjoy my new amp when it gets shipped.

    @RaaaawrProductions Depends on what is more important to you. The spider jam doesn't have all the bells and whistles as the spider iv. It is more of a true student practice amp. But the drums/jam tracks and the 24 minute looper are cool features. The spider iv has more effects, more presets amp/cab models. It is a pretty good digital amp for the money. Not a Mesa or Marshall, but also a lot more reasonable for those of us not on tour or sponsored.

  • @formercakid
    @formercakid 14 лет назад

    Regarding your comment that when the Spider is opened up it begins to sound too digital. Solid-state amps are usually designed to be used well under maximum output. You should have opted for testing the 120 or 150 watt versions.

  • @avrilcadabra
    @avrilcadabra 10 лет назад

    I needed a new amp and effects pedals, so this worked out for me since it does it all in one. It does all the stuff I like, metallica, zakk, slayer, megadeth tones as well as a bunch of clean to rock tones. You can press the manual button and and just pick an amp model on the dial , then do your usual gain, bass mid treb etc, then add have a separate dial for, chorus , delay and reverb and save it to channel A B C D. it does have 64 user banks to save things, and you can mess about it in LCD screen and change routing paths and virtual boosters, tweak reverb types.
    Basically what im saying, for someone like me who's used to old school solid states or valves you can treat the amp that way without getting lost in it. Then as well easy to appreciate inbuilt tuner and looping. I do have a small class A valve amp that does a specific sound but I still find myself using the spider the spider for the majority of the time. I havn't gigged for a long time, but it's certainly loud enough for small gigs, pubs.

  • @alex16foamy
    @alex16foamy 14 лет назад

    With the insane/metal/hi-gain, and some adjustments of the bass/mid/treb knob you can. Plus I think you can D/L song presets from the line 6 website, and there might be some TBDM, CC, and other death metal bands.

    alot of people say this is a bad amp. i just got this amp and i really like it. it has great sounds and effects. i dont care much about the distortion on it since i use a pedal but this is truly an amazing amp! i have the 75w version. it gets pretty loud too. but then again i havent had it for too long so i cant say much about it, but so far, i love it!

  • @socialgrudge
    @socialgrudge 12 лет назад

    And by the way, Line6 are huge in the recording industry, because of their ability to record directly out of the amp, NO MIC needed. I use my HD147 and turn off the can sim, then record my track, then use an Orange speaker impulse on one track and a Engl on the other then blend the 2. There are just soo many ways to make your guitar sound good these days. Tubes are old technology, and soon the technology will surpass "TUBES", If they allready havent.

    @deadlyzin101 - When you have it on clean, try turning both effects knobs on then all the way off. Your sound should be clean without any effects. To keep it that way, press and hold the clean button. All the buttons will flash then stop. Now, everytime you push the 'clean' button, there will be no more effects. I have the same amp and have come across this same issue when I first got it. Enjoy!

    When my band plays Live, I ALWAYS mic my Line6 HD147, and at low volumes being mic'd sound really good. Same with the Line6 Tube amps.. I feel its personal choice. Actually I just got a Randall Solid State amp, and Im VERY pleased with it. I run my POD HD400 into it and It sounds great. You DONT need a tube amp, unless you really want one. And I know they sound great as well, but Ive recorded in the studio and my fellow guitar players cant tell the difference.

    I agree, man. I have a 15watt Spider 3 (like $100 new) and a 100watt Fender Frontman (like $300 new) neither of them really help me find my own tone. The amps I've played that are like like $750+ (both tube and SS) in stores they are much easier to get your own tone out of. The amp I'm currently going after is a Marshall Vintage Modern combo tube amp. =P

    The thing I've noticed playing with my Line 6 Spider III is that I have to set the tone according to where im playing. That being said the tone that I jam with in my bedroom is slightly different than the tone that I Jam with my band or live with. This could be the case with all amplifiers but I wouldn't know, I haven't played them all yet.

    funny how things can come around...I've played tube amps for years...did make the jump to modeling about 10 years ago..but then went back to tubes...but frankly..and anyone will tell you..tube amps are like people..they have different moods...a tube amp can sound fantastic one day and the next day, you might be looking at the same amp thinking "What is wrong with this thing?" ..just last night I could not get my tube amp to sound like i wanted it to, and I didn't change any settings..just one of those days...as such I am considering a jump back to modeling for my practice amp..I have a JSX 120 1/2 stack for (bigger) gigs...but since I have two basic sounds (clean and metal) , i don't necessarily need all the intermediate tones that a tube amp will provide..and I do like the ability to dial in and preset if need be...I'm kind of old school ..and I do miss the days of the ADA MP1/MP2 and a power amp..that was literally the best of both worlds...wish SOMEONE would make a tube preamp like the MP1 again!!

    Good job on an unbiased review man! The Line 6 Spider's are, IMHO, a great practice amp for home use. Their higher end gear is also great for live and giggin musicians. Alot depends on the musician themselves. I've seen Line 6 sound amazing at one show, and sound like ass at another.

    @AlexM1175 Some people say that the Line 6 amplifiers are not compatible with all the guitars...I think that it is untrue but even it is, the fact that the Line 6 is digital and not proportional it makes it really sensitive!!!

    Hey Rob. This has got to be one of your more 'personable' mano et mano -esque videos I've seen you in.
    I thought your advice and thoughts at the start of the screencast when deciding between valve(tube) and digital amps, was very mature, sorry mate ;)
    (I would like to know when you said the new Marshal series was 'MUCH better', what you meant exactly - perhaps another screencast?)

  • @videakiasful
    @videakiasful 13 лет назад

    @NiGHTRiDER9001 It is better indeed but as i said i don't need all these type of effects...The only motivation for me is that it costs less than the Line 6 Spider IV (in Greece) (where a Line 6 Spider IV 30W) costs 215€ the Peavey Vypyr 30 costs 177€ plus the shipping charge which is 20€!!!Thanks for the advice though!

    I have a line 6 spider iv hd. Like he said it’s just fun. Can get any sound I can imagine and the shortboard is amazing. However I do admit that I like to go to the music store and plug into a Marshall for some nice distorted tones. But I’d be lost without the versatility and the idea of a typical amp vs a modeling amp and having to buy all the pedals and batteries and wires and crap. Nah. This is better.

    I've always played a triple rec live. But, I Use my pod for recording and it sounds awesome. I'm thinking of getting a tube preamp and trying the pod out for a set. Line 6 makes awesome stuff. A lot of guitar tones now days are being recorded with the pod hd and even 2.0 and those recordings are phenomenal.

    If you're only going to be using it for home practice, a 15 is easily easily loud enough. A 75 would be too much for home only use unless you have deaf neighbours. I'd look into a Peavey Vypyr instead though mate, I have the 15 and the master vol never gets turned above about 3 in the house. I'd recommend the 30 just for the bigger speaker.

    I know a few sound engineers and acousticians who would definitely disagree with you about the origin of 'tone'. I agree with you about the mythos that is 'tone' and often unfounded snobbery. I remember A/B-ing, with a load of sound engineers and musicians some different expensive software for mixing and mastering - but someone messed up the AUX sends so we were hearing A/A - it was amazing the amount of people who said "Oh yeah, that sounds great" even though it was exactly the same sound.

    One of these with my Jackson Rhoads Rrxmg and emg pickups sounds fuckn mean" put it on "amir lead" and turn the chorus off and it's metal hard,the variety of sounds on this amp are what makes it an awesome purchase as the price is great! We can't all spend thousands of dollars on "proper gig" setups now can we bitches?

    @Mattguitar724 In a word, yes. It would be a great starting place or step up from the 'first amp' which is usually hideous. (At least mine was.) Just don't get overwhelmed or disillusioned with the digital toys.

      +FGFoxy honestly it's all on the ability to dial everything in. I edit everything I use to my preferred tones. I threw Gibson lp's that I mainly use and it matches up well with everything. if you have it you can check through all the tones they preinstalled because there are just so many tones to use

      +mason pullam thanks. I'm looking at buying one of these amps as they have the versatility for not very much money. You said it could compete with a Mk V? What about Dual Rec?

    • @thorthunderlungs5171
      @thorthunderlungs5171 8 лет назад

      +FGFoxy I watched the band Broken Omen open for Stitched Up Heart last night and their guitarist was using a Spider 4 head. The other band that opened was using a Dual Rec as was Stitched Up Heart. I swear to you on everything that the Spider owned the Mesas. The guy was using the Slipknot preset tweaked just a little and it was incredible. I was shocked. I'm looking for one right now. Ebay has them for a couple hundred bucks. I know there's a lot of haters out there but my ears don't lie. Give it a shot.

    @ShadowOfLight3000 i recently perchesed this, like he said lots of stupid sounds, but also has a really clean, well clean tone, its juts got endless possibilities with different sounds ad effects that would be great for playing in your basement with some friends, but i would suggest a slightly higher quality amp for any gigging

      I own a Line 6 Spider IV 150 since 2011 and I have to say, man the thing just sounds awesome! You get a great Modeling-Amp for the money. Of course if you don't really like the whole modeling thing and just wanna turn some knobs, the Spider might not be the thing for you.

    • @leavemealoneyouprick
      @leavemealoneyouprick 10 лет назад +1

      played a few of them and everytime theyve sounded terrible. a guy local to me gigs with a line 6 head and cab and every time they sounded so bad, i have to leave the venue... although that might also have something to do with their terrible singer.
      also, option paralysis is never worth it. invest in pedals if you want mental effects, you'll thank yourself for doing so in the future!

      leavemealoneyouprick like rob said you can dial in most any sound you can think of, only have yourself to blame if you can't get a nice sound out of this celestian speaker.
