Just ordered one last week and installed it on the weekend. I use it for my Steam games because my P5 already holds my OS and apps. Also, my 3 TB BarraCuda HDD caused slow loading times and sometimes even annoying shader compilation/texture streaming stutter, which is why I only use it for my lossless music collection and documents from now on. The MX500 instantly removed the HDD bottleneck, holds quite a few games and doesn't run hot at all. I definitely recommend it as a gaming drive 👍
I appreciate seeing a benchmark graph. Crucial MX500 and the Samsung 870 EVO both seem to have their own issues. Though just having something else to compare them too helps a bit.
A year ago I Bought a 2tb MX500 drive, installed on an Intel Platform, initialized it, created a partition and then started copying some files... After a few seconds the copying process failed and the drive disappeared from Windows, restarting the computer didn't help. I had to power cycle the PC for the drive to reappear and work, after that it's been working just fine. Yesterday, I bought another mx500 (1tb) from a completely different seller (different country) and installed it on another system. Guess what? exactly the same thing happened again, it's just me or these drives don't like the first initialization?
1TB cost LESS compared to my old 120GB Samsung 850 Evo :p Amazing how ssd prices are going down. I'll grab this drive soon. Also the tiny pcb size is due to the "3D" NAND layer. A regular non"3D" takes up more space and is inherently slower.
thank you for this review. i needed something pretty fast and reliable to store my torrents, and i wanted something a bit cheap as Australian prices are royally fucked, and the better brands go up to 200-400 dollars. so thank you again for this review😁

@@TechLegend-com Ahh I see that makes sense, it's like saying why would I want a high end hard drive vs a budget sata ssd. But! for me personally, unlike sata ports on your motherboard, m.2 are scarce on your motherboard, so then my question is why would you want a budget m.2 on one of your or only your only m.2 slot?

I can't say as the failing SSDs might be a different batch. Best is to check the return rate of the SSD with your preferred retailer and make an educated decision based on that.
@@roninzero12 I'm not clear on the issue. It can be either a bad batch that had a lower life span or something else happening. If yours is working after one year than I'd say that it will continue to work for many years.

I have researched all the competing brands at similar price point, and I find similar reports of failures on those too, and some worse reports like 970 EVO and WD Blue SA510. Both of those received firmware updates that claim to have resolved their issues. Crucial have also claimed to fix some "corner case" problem in their latest firmware M3CR046. I keep coming back to the MX500 even though I want to get something else, there just doesn't seem to be a better option in the price bracket. If money was no object I'd get the Seagate IronWolf NAS SSD. I don't know, I think all low-mid tier SSDs are poor in 2023. Even WD Red SSDs have reports of premature failures in Amazon reviews. All of the cheaper ones are slow, DRAMless and use cheaper and cheaper designs to drive the price down while quality and performance suffers. I get the feeling something went wrong with SSDs in the last couple of years. I don't know what it could be, maybe Covid related somehow. Maybe it's just a small amount of users having issues while the majority who had no problems don't feel the need to write reviews saying they had no issue. On the other hand the large amount of positive Amazon reviews for 970 EVO are all just short term reviews. Sort by lowest rating tells a different story, people reporting back after 1 year, 2 years. And then you have some reports from people claiming to have bought large batches of MX500 for schools and businesses with 30% failure rate. But maybe this was because they were running old bugged firmware which corrupted the data. So the drive is not really dead but just corrupted data, so perhaps it could be used again with new firmware and reinstalling everything? I'm writing this on a 2013 SanDisk SDSSDXP240G (TLC). According to CrystalDiskInfo: 20,004hrs usage, 94% health, 14TBW, 20TBR, 0 uncorrectable errors, 0 reassigned blocks. It has never done anything weird and the OS has never crashed (Windows 7).
@@kath4rsis513 For a 4TB Drive, you'll expect to have 3.73 TB of space available. This is not an issue. In general terms, the capacity of an SSD or HDD is measured in decimal bytes, but your computer uses binary bytes. Indeed WD and Samsung are expensive, especially now.
Getting a couple of these for an ITX build as it has limited M.2 slots. MX500 is one of the cheapest SSDs that actually have a DRAM cache.

The P2 lacks DRAM, just something to consider.
Indeed, but it is better as it's an M.2 drive. Also, you can forget the P2 for a moment, you can find some decent M.2 SSDs for less.
yep - also the P2 uses QLC whereas the MX500 is TLC. Endurance much worse on the P2. Not a direct comparison really.
