He remained the best batsman in the world for a further 4x year's. Prior to the operation, between 1976 to 1983, Viv Richard's Test Batting Average was an incredible 66.17. He averaged 50+ in ODI, including 54 against Australia, 60 against several countries & 66 against England. He averaged 63+ in World Cup Matches. I think Chris Gayle was a very good batsman in his own right. Richards was better and more consistent.
The only thing I would say is that Richards had the backing and a West Indian squad filled with top line batsman which gave him the freedom to play the way he did. If he got out , it wasn't a worry because other batsman could score runs. Some argue , while he would still have been a very good player, he might not have as done as brilliantly if he didn't have such quality players to back him up.
An old friend of mine felt Gayle was unlucky not to have a strong batting line up support him. As good as he was, he might have done even better had he had a strong batting line up for support. He sometimes was under pressure.
      However, Viv was better.

His average in test of 50plus and odi average of 47( best in his generation) far exceeds Chrisgayle avg of 42 in tests and 37 in odis.
There were much better batsman than chris gayle in west indies like clive loyd and gordon greenidge and desmond Haynes. Sir Vivian Alexander Richards was even better and overshadowed loyd greenidge and Haynes, thus Chris Gayle is now where near comparision. Richards did not wear a helmet partly due to bravado, and also to keep himself sharp, I guess.
That clip demonstrates amazing technique of watching the ball and avoiding it properly despite it being aimed right at his face.
The fact that he could get killed possibly made him have much better reflexes than most batsmen!

Exactly - a very disingenuous video title. Of course Akram was no slouch, but by all accounts Duncan Fletcher was perhaps the quickest bowler Viv ever faced. Here is the video of it.

I Don't think the ball was that quick seeing the reaction of the wicketkeeper,in those days generally akram bowled 1 or 2 genuine Quick deliveries in an over.clearly viv Richards had past his prime then.he was completely beaten by that delivery.i think because of Akrams very whippy wrist action, his height, being a left arm Bowler coming round the wicket, akrams impossible trajectory made Extra zipp through the pitch thats what beaten Viv.otherwise i don’t think it was 90 mph delivery in the air.Akram bowled at his fastest during 1992 world cup.though i had read in cricket magazines he bowled very quick in bridgetown test in 1988 Against west Indies.and he bowled faster than any of the west indian bowlers in that particular test
