- We first grew to love Mark-Paul Gosselaar for his role as the heartthrob Zack Morris on “Saved by the Bell.” The actor stops by “Tamron Hall” with his “mixed-ish” co-stars Tika Sumpter and Christina Anthony to talk about the season 2 of the show. During the sit-down, he also opens up about the untimely passing of his “Saved by the Bell” castmate Dustin Diamond, known as Screech, who succumbed to lung cancer earlier this month.

He was asked about his death dude. Not like he was going out of his way to talk about him. He didn't act like he was extremely distraught or anything. He legit said "it is always sad when somebody died" and he tweeted about it which isnt like some clout chasing thing pretending they were bff's. Dustin was more the reason for the cast not talking to him then they were. He was a bastard for years. Im sure you have people you were friends with in school that you never kept in contact with. Not like you are a prick but people just drift apart. The cast were literally just coworkers. Everyone assumes they were all best friends but that is just their stupid minds assuming what we see on tv is real. Get over it. Dustin was an outcast for a reason and if you saw him on reality tv or interviews then you know he was an asshole for most his life. Cant blame people for not wanting to be around that

Riddle me this. Why didn’t they show this kindness and this reaching out when diamond was alive? They didn’t invite him to the show. No one besides Mario Lopez reached out. It’s always when someone dies that people feel bad. Show this compassion to them when they are STILL ALIVE.

That's what I loved about Mario. He cared. He admitted in his book that still kept in touch with Diamond. I just don't understand why the rest of the cast wait it so long. Mark Paul admitted back an interview in 2014 he had not talk to diamond since 1994. And Joey since you mentioned they used bullied him if that's true could that be the reason Diamond wrote that book to buried them? Who knows.

I was the "Screech" in my high school, therefore I identified with Dustin's character: the proverbial bullied nerd. I'm deeply saddened that apparently this treatment carried over into real life. May Dustin rest in peace!

true i agree, but for all the people bashing Mark and the other cast members talking abt they don't care or of course they are paying respect only because he died or they aren't sincere. Well just remember they were cast mates, they kinda grew up together for 4+ year, they felt like a family at one point in time, they all started from nowhere together so their is completely nothing wrong with sympathizing and paying their respects. Never know all of them could have a change of heart lets not judge because of the past!!

So freaking sad. Lark & Dustin the best/originals of the show. But, now knowing the facts of how the rest of the cast treated them, I have no more interest in the show/cast.
I think with her Jehovas Witness upbringing, that kinda excluded her a bit too. She wasn’t really allowed to hang out with them. Then later on I heard she had some mental problems. Sad. That being said, it’s easy to judge a situation from the outside. We don’t know all the nuances or details of their relationships. I’d like to believe that most people, are generally good.
Mario was the real hero for Dustin during his life; doesn't seem like the rest really cared for him.
Exactly. That is one reason why I still like Mario Lopez and respect him. He has always been Dustin's TRUE friend out of the SBTB days and has always remained humbled. At least Lark did forgive him and reached out to him before his death. But Mark-Pail only showed what an arrogant prick he was by trashing Dustin at every opportunity. Sure Elizabeth and Tiffani also trashed him. But not to the degree Mark-Paul has. And that is why I never will respect the guy again.

Honestly, the most heartfelt memorial for Dustin Diamond came from Tori Spelling. True, she was only on 3 episodes as Violet; but, her presence as Screech's girlfriend is forever seared in the memories of fans. I have not seen the reboot. Supposedly, Screech is up exploring space with his robot, Kevin. What the producers of the reboot should do is have Tori reprise her role as Violet. At the very least, spend an episode or two really remembering the friend and character that Screech was. In my mind, Violet transfered schools during high-school; and, that's why we never saw her after the chess match between Screech and the Russian. But, I say the two found one another again, possibly in space. And they reconnected, falling back in love and getting married before he passed away. The show needs to honor Screech with a little bit of happiness.
Tori's tribute was so touching. In fact, I'd forgotten that she was on SBTB until I saw her tribute to Dustin and then I was like, "oh yeah! She played Screech's girlfriend, Violet!"
@@Kimothy80 you know what? Tori's been through some stuff in her life, too. And that's why I really believe her memorial to Dustin Diamond. Lark Voorhies as well, because they sort of ignored her as a cast member up until recently. I'm not saying Dustin Diamon didn't do some rather questionable things; but, I think he was still trying to shake a rebellious stage in his 40's that he had never gotten to embrace in his teens. And Cancer sucks. I just wish the cast, aside from Mario Lopez, had taken to task of contacting Dustin when the news first hit about his having Cancer.

@@kitnascimento0none of them are perfect. Elizabeth Berkeley nearly ruined her career with "Showgirls." She is lucky that over time it has become a very successful cult film. But, she is not trashed because she was in it. The cast probably did like Lark more than Dustin--Mark should only have good things to say about her. After all, he dated her for three years. Dustin was the youngest of the group. He started at 10. The rest of the group was already well in their teens. So, I could see why maybe they didn't hang out with outside of work, save for show-related things. And yes. He did some questionable things in his life. I think he was trying to live through a rebellious stage up until recently. He probably did alienate a lot of people. Still, fans of the original show loved the whole group dynamic. When reunions were happening, Dustin was not a part of it. Lark wasn't a part of the Fallon reunion; and, it was only because fans got up in arms about her not being on the reboot that she got to do a cameo. I just hope that when all is said and done that Dustin/Screech will be honored somehow on the season 2 reboot. He deserves that much. And hopefully, Lark will be a part of that, too.

I remenber that that Falon guy was trying to get get them for th 20th aniversary but couldn´t for whatever reason. She wasn´t on the Falon thing 5 years ago because she probably was in a mess at the time even now she seems to have problem speaking

The Only Guy who stayed IN Contact with Dustin was “Mario Lopez” They talked just After Dustin got the Diagnosis. 2 Weeks ago Mario Said when he talked to Dustin, Dustin Seemed in high Spirits two weeks ago. None Of the Other Cast Mates Stayed in touch with Dustin , sadly Dustin had just turned 44 On Jan 7th.
The cast could of reached out to him no excuses. The sad thing is he will never know in person how appreciated he was. Saved by the Bell a cheesy show, but with great laughs from Screech & Lisa Turtle.
Well we never see Screech in the new "Saved By The Bell" series. I was so looking forward to him making guest appearances on the show.
I believe Lark was still pretty close with Dustin. Both of them were kinda blacklisted. Lark only seems to just being let back in now because of the reboot but for the longest time she was ignored just like Dustin was.
Lark is dealing with her own issues so I don’t expect her to keep in touch. She did an interview with Dr. Oz. The rest of them have no excuse.
@@marriejames01 Lark talked about her friendship with Dustin in her Instagram post. So I don't think they ever lost touch. Mario has reached out to Dustin several times through the years as well. The rest are full of it though. There was a panel Mark, Mario and Elizabeth did not that long ago where they basically admitted how terrible he was treated. Mark said he was mean to Dustin, Elizabeth tried to act like she was good to him but Mark and Mario called her out on it. Mario said he was the only one that was really good to him and neither of them disagreed. They probably regret that video is even other there. This was a few years before cancel culture really took off. It really exposed them. Because now they act like they were all great to him and made him feel like he was the crazy one. He was the youngest cast member, was the nerd on a show full of teenage heartthrobs and they treated the guy like shit. He was already feeling like crap and they made it worse with their little click. And then when he spoke out about it they made him out to be the crazy one instead of saying they were sorry because they were young too. I believe people can change. But with how they handled it, it's obvious they didn't.
Dustin Diamond got vilified by some of his former cast mates in the media who ran a smear campaign against him. Some things were fabricated in the book but there was also a lot of truth discussed. He apologized for the book though he had every right to tell his side of the story. A ghostwriter exaggerated some things but a lot of it was also the truth.
Dustin Diamond was bullied on that set and appeared to have a lasting negative impact on him. He and Mark were never on good terms. I remember Mark saying some not very nice things on camera in old interviews. He would mock Dustin. Everybody else reached out to him when he got diagnosed with cancer...even Tiffani who probably clashed with him the most on Saved by the Bell. Dustin was never accepted by Mark and that is sad. Dustin was a troubled soul but he has suffered from so much abuse, mistreatment, and toxic people. He was the picked on outsider in that cast. I miss Dustin Diamond.

It’s acceptable for people to say I was harassed on the set years ago and it’s that persons word of god but Dustin was bullied and ostracized and no one cared. Double standard. Awkward! He comes across as defensive and keeps his answer quite short. I feel uncomfortable hearing him trying to give a kind word towards Dustin. The truth is, he didn't like the guy, he purposely kept his distance from him and excluded him from reunions of "Saved by the bell". He's just playing the part of a guy pretending to care. I feel like the problem must go far before the porn/book. Dustin has said over and over that the rest of the cast aside from Mario Lopez has never seen him since 1995. All of them did not associate with him for a long time. But Mark Paul even brings it up in this interview, he himself did not see any of the other cast members for many many years. Mark Paul had a very hard time getting work after SbtB because he too had been type cast, every producer saw him as 'Zack Morris' and nothing else. So I think for a long time he grew to resent everything about the show because he had very little work the following 10 years. I think the reality is they were just child co-workers who didn't feel much of a bond off set. That's mostly all there is to it I think. They weren't close off camera. Why should they be forced to be? Just because the show was a hit? It's odd how we expect cast members of old shows to stay close, but only if the show was a hit. If the show flops, absolutely nobody cares about that. Dustin was also on the road doing stand up comedy for like 20 years straight, so it isn't like he didn't stay busy. He honestly seemed like a pretty chill and funny guy most of the time, just a few incidents here and there that destroyed his reputation, but overall he hardly seemed like he had a 'bad' life to me, he seemed to be enjoying himself up to the diagnosis

A couple years ago he gave an interview where he said if he ever bumped into Dustin he would say hi but wouldn't ask him to grab lunch, or something like that. He obviously had a lot of animosity towards him.

MPG had beef with Dustin. They weren't friends, hadn't talked in like 25 years. The SBTB cast wasn't really in close contact for a long time. Now that everyone's all nostalgic, they are friends again. Lets remember they are in show business. Don't ever forget about the business part.
It's important though especially in 2021 to remember that Dustin was bullied and an outcast.. and people are now talking about it. Yeah it's business, but when things like this happen and people begin to talk.. that will affect business so the tweets from the cast and BS interviews like this will suddenly appear. I respectfully agree with you. It didn't affect Mark Paul because he didn't have a personal relationship with Dustin Diamond nor did he have a friendship with Dustin Diamond; it was strictly professional on set in the Saved by the Bell seasons. It is just like stepfather passing away when a man didn't get along with his stepfather but respected him from a distance for his mother's sake.

Hopefully they had a chance to meet before his passing; nonetheless, they will meet again.
Way to call him out Tamron! Everyone knows that the cast (except Mario) didn’t care much for Dustin. The cameras stopped rolling in the 90s but there were reunions since then so shame on all of you. At least Dustin apologized to the cast but they won’t get to do that - SMH.

Mario Lopez said on Howard Stern that the cast always treated Dustin very badly on set. Mario said he was the only one that really liked him and was friendly to him. Lark Voorhies was nice to him too. So this BS about them not liking him due to his book doesn’t hold up at all.
I am so sad he is gone Dustin was my inspiration and hero growing up. The one thing that makes me a little sad is when he got arrested years ago the cast members didn't have the heart to reach out to him. Its very important to reach out to someone you never know what people are fighting on the inside.

Hope they pay homage to him in the reboot in some way. He was very much part of the show and deserved to be in the reboot when it all first began. Being that Dustin had troubles in his life, the show probably thought it would look bad if they casted him back. Now that he passed on, they will never get that moment back of having him there. That's truly sad. Tori Spelling put a very heartfelt message out there as did Mario. It shows they really had a connection with Dustin.
Just because you "wrap things up" after the camera stops rolling, and you go live your life until the next season, doesn't mean you can't pick up a phone and ask how their doing or go out. It shouldn't take a death of someone to be remembered from a show. 😪

I dealt with Dustin a few times when he was here in the So Cal area...to say he was pompous and a hard to deal with would be an understatement...I doubt after working with him for so long there would be much to look back on and smile about, after all its called acting for a reason.
Dustin had a hard life like so many former child stars that Hollywood chews up and spits out. Mario was the only one with a heart. Rest in Peace Dustin.
I loved Dustin and it's heartbreaking that he died, he's the only one I actually wanted to see on the reboot I didn't care for the others except mario. I thought they distanced themselves from him when he went bonkers as an adult and ran wild with drugs and prostitutes and pornography. And I hate to say it but most of the those who grew up in the 70s and 80s had idealistic happy friendship childhood and I mean close like family and after they graduated from High School they left and acted like they never had any kind of relationship with you that was close. If that group would have worked together and kept that same energy of friendship, love, family and loyalty alive our country would be less divided, selfish, self-centered and full of strife.

While I think it is a shame that Dustin was always excluded with anything to do with SbtB, I think it is wrong for us as a society to put to much pressure and expectation on former child actor cast members on hit television to remain close and be great friends. For what? Our own satisfaction? I mean if I'm being honest, when was the last time I saw some of my childhood best friends? 25 years ago? Do I feel like getting back in touch? ....not really. It's also weird how Saved by the Bell specifically has always had this type of pressure put on it. Mark Paul was on Tamron’s talk show to talk about the show Mixed-ish, which he and Tika both star in. She just asked him about Dustin because of how recently he passed away.
Those kids all got contractually robbed for Saved by the Bell.....plus Dustin's parents robbed him financially as well as a kid.....no residuals for actors in all those TBS reruns......somebody out there got rich off it, but not Dustin!

In his podcast, he speaks very highly of Dustin's comedic timing in scenes. Also they both did an appearance at Steel City con. There's some photos of them together with fans just last year. We don't know their business - for all we know they may have reconciled and have moved on.

I don't really have a problem with him not keeping in touch with dustin all these years. I do have a problem with how they intentionally left him out of the reboot. There must of been enough truth in that tell all book to keep them mad at him for 10+ years. They should have let go of there grudges long ago, it's not like there lives were destroyed over the book.

@@dannydorko7075 Some of the cast were very nasty towards him and he apologized for the book even though 80% of it was the truth. He was bullied and ostracized on that set. Even Mario discussed that. I am not excusing his transgressions but the guy was routinely dealing with abusive people in his life and he went to prison for defending himself in a bar fight. Whether on Saved by the Bell or on a reality show, Dustin was always a magnet for bullies

Yeah but Dustin felt publicly that he was ostracized. If one person had apologized it would’ve made the difference. It’s like if years ago someone felt uncomfortable being harassed but the person doing it didn’t see that. It doesn’t matter about the person doing it. All it takes is one apology.

I'm in the middle of getting ready to renovating my suite & doing some spring cleaning to get rid of old clothes & stuff I don't need anymore & came across an autographed Polaroid of Dustin & I that was taken a long time ago. He charged $ 5.00 for it. I talked to him while it was happening & he seemed like a nice enough guy. So glad I found it. Thought it was accidently thrown away & lost for ever !!

I thought his tribute on social media was quite poignant, but I think it would have been better to acknowledge in this interview that there was bad feeling in the past between Dustin and other members of the cast. Divisions can heal, but glossing over them comes across a bit insincere.
I could care less for the reboot. I never did...cause Screech was left out. Glad I didn’t waist precious time watching it! I find this interview to be pretty annoying. Dustin was exactly my age. This is sad.

He did the Saved By the Bell wedding movie. I think that came out in 1994. At most, he was 17. The College Years only lasted from September 1993 to February 1994.
I think Mark basically played himself on the show. Though I think even his character wasn’t as bad as he is. At least Zack was best friends with a nerd! Can imagine Mark just hanging out with ‘cool’ people.

One thing for sure Mario Lopez was the real friend that was there for Dustin Diamond. I can understand each of the other cast members have family and kids and busy with their lives but could at least reach out to Diamond anyway possible before he died if they that could have possibly put him in good spirits to fight the cancer but they didn't.
He got diagnosed when it was at stage 4 and Lung Cancer is very aggressive. 😔
You can work with someone everyday for years in a company or TV show for so close in a business setting. Once the camera stops and time runs out; you drift apart and parted ways. I feel sorry that Dustin passed so young. No one should. The thing is, I read a summary of what he wrote in the book, or what his supposed ghostwriter included, and the details were pretty sordid. If he didn't want that info put into the book, he didn't have to include it. He did and if the repercussions were that castmates distanced themselves from him because of that, it was their right.
Some of those sordid details were true and Dustin was mistreated by other cast mates. He had every right to write the book. Mario Lopez also wrote his own book but he didn't expose the truth behind the less the squeaky clean drama for most of his "friends".
This is a good honest interview
He was definitely the outcast of the group. He was years younger and wasn't cast out of a child star model guide. Many child stars face demons after their star dims. The cast didn't reach out to Dustin, but Dustin also didn't try to reach out to them I believe. He was both ashamed and proud of his fame I think. At times of loss it is super easy to find a scapegoat for past transgressions. The truth is both sides share fault for the fracture most commonly.
Hopefully we can all take the lessons from people who wish they had made up before one of the parties is no longer here. A simple hello is a great start.
