I have 4 snakes, and my Rosy is easily my favorite. He's a joy. Thanks for getting the word out about these amazing animals
Glad to share their amazingness 😁😁👍🏼
What are your other 3? Ty
are they slower moving than corn snakes? Im not rlly a fan of snakes that move around too fast and too much when u r holding them
A rosy boa is One of my favorite snakes
Yesss, I absolutely love my rosy. She was my very first snake, and I haven't had any issues with her apart from her being a little escape artist. Anyone out there considering getting one: definitely make sure your tank is escape proof. Aside from that though, she's never missed a meal for me, even deep in shed, and while she has bit me thinking I was food before, a tiny snake like this does almost no damage. 100% would recommend to other beginners and anyone looking for a sweet, gorgeous snake.
I'm always surprised how inquisitive my Rosy Boa is. Midas always wants to know what everything is, and aside from mistaking me for food twice (my fault) he's so polite! Sometimes I open the viv door and talk to him, and he rests his head on the ledge.
I want a rosy boa when I'm old enough :(
Veil same but my parents hate snakes
My mom hates snakes and if bring up something about snakes she’s like we are not getting a snake
@@dryleopardd show her you tube videos about these snakes. We kept one, it was a gift from my daughters’ biology teacher, as she showed such interest. We called her Rosie and she was a hit with her and her brothers’ friends. We bought a 20 gallon fish aquarium for it and she thrived until they went off to college, and I got tired of driving a long way for small frozen mice or rats. I eventually found her a good home near by. When the mom and kid came by for last Halloween, they were very happy with her, they had her for over a year, and she’s going strong. I wouldn’t blame her if you wanted a venomous snake, but a Roy Boa is truly harmless, and quite educational. Good luck👍
When you are young, waiting can seem like forever, but trust me, do your research now, and it won't be too long.
I just adopted my first rosy, and despite doing several months research, I'm still here watching videos. That being said, you make me feel more confident and I'll definitely be coming back for info from time to time.
Also, you sound like Matthew Broderick.
Congrats and great to hear. I’ll take a comparison to ole Ferris Bueller any day! 👍🏼
I love all their different colors. And their small size.
Your channel was a big reason why I decided to get my first lizard, a blue tongued skink, last year. Now I am considering my first snake and the first video to come up when researching rosy boa care is from you as well! I wouldn't want to get my reptile info from anyone else TC, keep it up!
Thank you so much! This made my day 😁
I just got a female Rosy as my first snake so THANK YOU. You gave me a couple details of care I hadn’t found in several weeks of research so you’ll help Agatha stay healthy. I can’t wait for the week or two to pass so I can start handling her!
Can I ask where you got yours from?
@@anime_tae36hobi50 Backwater Reptiles. I would recommend going through Morph Market instead though.
I use aspen fiber for most of my snakes, and it’s great because my roseys LOVE to dig
Yes! I've been looking into a rosy boa, thanks so much for making this, T.C.
Excellent!
Alexander Yarusch-Lapierre Hope you get it, Alexander! Mine is coming tomorrow! Blessings!
Update? 😮
This is one of my favorite videos of yours. It's very easy to follow and informative 👍
Excellent video. Thank you so much for sharing this. Great information. Much appreciated.
Loved the video! Very informative
Thank you so much for more videos on rosy boas!
Glad you like them!
Well done TC!
Thanks Jason! 😁
thanks so much im planning to get a rosy soon this is so helpful
Brilliant!
Thanks for making this video! I've had a Corn Snake for 7 years and a Hognose for 6 years and have been feeling it's time to add one more to my little snek family. I've been quite taken with Mexican Rosy Boas and from this video it sounds like the environment and care is very close to my other snakes so would fit in well :D
Of course, my next challenge is going to be to actually find someone who's producing them in the UK as the Mexican RB seems pretty rare here!
Rosy Boas in general seem pretty rare here, fingers crossed, one day!
I just subscribed great content
Thanks for the information that is presented in a logical and straightforward way. I didn’t expect that you would make a video on rosy boas and I happened to find it some years after publication! They are very unique snakes. I am keeping one for some years now and it is really unique and one-of-a-kind, given that in my country it is extremely rare to find one. It is a San Mathias Canyon male, who is eight years old now. Currently he has a aspen substrate, two hides at either end of the gradient and no water bowl. Sometimes I used it all of the time and sometimes I used it intermittently.
I may include a branch to bridge the two hides or something like that for more enrichment. He is not terribly active though. Even if he is not active, even if he is absent for months on end in winter or early spring, even if he is slow and honestly stupid even compare to other snakes, he is loved. Although they are easy, I would like to Point out some complexities about the species that I didn’t expect. It is important for them to hibernate in winter, even if we don’t put them through the process, they will go to the cool end by themselves and stop feeding. It’s best to give them a rest then. Also, males, like mine for example, continue to fast throughout most of spring in the breeding season. They are a little more active then as well. Also, the pre-shed times may be unusually protracted compare to other snakes. I never had any problems from food aggression, the only few times he bit me was when I was actually holding food the wrong way. I don’t use tongs, I just dangle it by the tail most of the time. Also it is quite interesting how they are feeding. They take a lot of time to swallow and it is curious how they fold over the prey and hide it. Other snakes are much more open with their feeding. The only time I had a problem with regurgitation was once, when he was particularly hungry, although in pre-shed. Usually he doesn’t eat at all then.
He regurgitated two days afterwards, and after two days still, he shed. They are incredibly low metabolism snakes, and I have recorded how many times he eats a year. He has gone for a whole year from 6 to 11 feedings, no more. His weight is around 220 g, 15 g up and down throughout the year. Sometimes it doesn’t feel as a snake completely. It has a rounded tail tip and has two vestigial hind limbs after all. Newer scientific changes don’t classify it as a true boa anymore.
The Erycidae family, the family of sand boas, is considered closely related but even more primitive than the true boas.
Just got my first snake a Rosy last week and she’s awesome. Already looking at getting a 2nd one.
Congrats
I’m getting my first snake soon and after a lot of research decided to get a rosy boa, I’m really nervous since it’s my first snake but your videos help!
I’m planning on getting a rosy soon and this video helped my research so much! I really want to try a bioactive, as that’s what I have for my leopard gecko, but that one will take time to plan correctly, so I think I’ll use the aspen chips as well.
Thank you so much!
I really enjoy your videos. they are clear, naturally organized, like reading a boook. And, you presetn the material so narually. I don't know if your content is scripted. But it sounds so fluid and natural but follows a clear informative structure. Plus, Rosies are just the best little beauties ever!
Thanks @Aaron S I really appreciate you saying that. They are scripted for the most part just to ensure I don't forget something or ramble (which I do in real life all the time)...lol
Rosy boas are one of my favorite snakes!
Excellent choice!
Love it!!! we got a dessert rosy!!! I loved watching ur video brother keep up the great work.
Thank you 🙏
I love these guys! Apparently June and July is not a good time of year to find them available, but someday… someday.
Rosy Boas are awesome!
Amen!
I’m looking into getting a pet snake so this helped a lot
awesome snake
Amazing video - this is the most informative video I've seen on this snake. I just put a downpayment for my first snake yesterday - a matias rosy boa!
Congrats! Super glad to hear it!
11:46 - T.C. I just adore you. Lol. 🤗🤪
👍🏼❤️
One of the things I noticed after years of keeping rosies is that mine are far more interested in drinking water when it is fresh, and less interested or no interest if the water has been standing for more than 2 days. I would bet that is true of other reptile species as well. I now water all my snakes in intervals - fresh water for 2 days, no water for 2 days (longer for the rosies.) I wouldn't prefer stagnant water that was sitting in a glass open to the air for 3 days either. Then again, it probably doesn't matter..🙂🥤
This is a very solid observation. In fact animals (snakes specifically) given fresh water daily are more hydrated and drink more and have better sheds than those given Water weekly or when the bowl is dry.
Just bought a desert rosy boa Best Buy ever
Yesssss!
It's been over a year since my rosy escaped while we were on vacation. Had a house/pet sitter but it still happened. I STILL miss that snake. It feels weird to have another but its my favorite snake....
Im sorry for your loss 🙁
I hate it when that happens. I had a pet sitter for my ball python while I was away for Christmas. He escaped and never found him.
love rosy, i have a male and female san gab.
Thank you sooo much for this video! I have hopefully found a breeder up here in Canada (do you know of any just in case he doesn't pan out?) and I am eager to hopefully adopt one of his babies for my first ever pet snake. If all goes well and after a couple of years I think I am doing great then I hope to adopt more and begin breeding them so that there are more rosy boas up here in Canada.❤
Thanks for the video, it’s hard to find info about these guys and I learned a lot. So the different localities are basically naturally occurring rosy “morphs” in an area?
Essentially yes👍🏼
Not only that, but there will also be size differences. Anymore I like to keep some of the localities that do not get as large. A male rosyboa from such localities can be a nice compact snake to keep. A 10-gal size cage will do it. I use what is called a polycarbonate "full size food pan" from any restaurant supply online. It is a clear box with roughly a 10" x 20" floorspace. I have to drill (use a step bit) many holes in the lid for ventilation, but it is worth the trouble. The boxes are indestructible, FDA approved, have no plastic odor, and they look nice. I use binder clips to secure the lids. Just some ideas for you. Of course, glass cages work.
Hey! Just want to say I love your Rosy Boa info videos. They definitely sealed the deal on me buying one. I wanted to know if you have any suggestions on where I could buy one online?
Try looking up Rosy Boa Nation FB page. Breeders on there can direct you to their sites 😊

TC, this was great! Just like you told me, only better! My rosy is on his way right NOW! I hope I sleep tonight, I’m so excited! His name is Pickles. He’ll be quarantined in another room for a month or so, then moved in with his siblings. There’s a Ball Python, a Western hognose, 2 bearded dragons and a 21 year old African red bellied parrot whose been with me since she was 3 months old. If you wanna see them, they’re on my channel, My Menagerie.
Thanks again for a great informational video! Blessings!
Love the name!!
This is the first video of yours that I’ve seen and you have such a great way of presenting information!
Ive decided to add a rosy to my family later this year or early next year and was wondering if you regularly produce and sell babies? I refuse to purchase an animal from a mill type facility and am now on the hunt for a good breeder, but I’m not finding a whole lot for these little cuties.
I do breed a few. Im hoping for babies this October 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼

I don't but I do post new events including baby births on my FB page. If you follow that you will know when they are born and then you can email me to get one.

And do you know if I can put two boa in the same terrarium?
And how to recibiste mâle and female ?

Could you do a video on how you create the flat rock hides for your rosys in your naturalistic set ups? I want to make sure Im doing it correct so the rock doesnt crush them when they burrow. Thanks!
Yes indeed! Great idea!

My rosy boa is an arizona rosy boa and she so sweet
I love the Arizona localities. Small but stocky, great eaters, very nice colors.
Great video!!! Regarding what you said about humidity how do you feel about "humidity boxes/hides" to help with shedding. Would that end up doing more harm than good to Rosys??
I wouldn’t use them. Most folks have whole sheds in a very dry climates without it.
Rosies can be at high humidity for a few hours with no harm, but rarely is it necessary. I have had a few have stuck eyecaps from a shed, and in those few cases I did put the snake in damp moss for a few hours. But by far most rosyboa sheds are perfect with no additional humidity added.
Just wondering what size was that enclosure? Was it 2' deep or 3' deep?
Can you do a video about setting up heat for a rack? Thank you
Heat tape
I do plan to do an entire how to on building a rack including the tape later next year for sure 👍🏼
Do you have any places that have rosy boas available for cheap in the US? I’ve been looking for one but they are all out of my price range right now.
Thinking about getting a rosy, humidity in my apartment ranges anywhere from 50-60, what humidity level do you recommend and if lower than 50, any methods to lower humidity in the tank? Thanks awesome video
If using a screen top, then 50-60% is not a problem at all. A dry substrate, a heat pad and/or overhead infrared-A source (halogen light, day bulb or Arcadia Deep Heat projector) and temperature controller are a must.
After much experimentation, all of my cages are now screen-tops, heat pad on the side wall for night, and infrared heating overhead. I let temps get over 90 at the hotspot. The snakes can move away while hidden, or go down into the thick substrate to cooler areas. Last years babies have grown the best under these conditions, while maintaining correct body shape with the least amount of food. Give them the correct temperature range and let the snakes manage how they use it. That yields best results.
I'm looking for a blue Rosy....
I had a site send me an email to let me know they were back in stock months ago and lost it.....
:(
I just purchased a baby rosy. I also bought an adult sized enclosure. Can I put my young boa into a large enclosure, or do I need to keep it small until he grows into adult-hood? I've noticed it's harder to keep a temp gradient in small 12"x12" or 14"x8" enclosures.
Found this vid doing research on rosies! I would love to set up a natural or maybe a bio active tank, do you have any advice on substrates for a more natural look?
BioDude Terra Saharah
I have tried a few. I tried decomposed granite - that looks the most awesome and perhaps the closest to what a rosy would be on in the wild. I also tried Terra Sahara from BioDude, and that works as well. Belly heat may be more difficult to do with "natural" substrates. If you use overhead heat, I recommend the Arcadia Deep Heat Projector. It shoots a nice beam of heat down to the cage floor with no visible light. The wavelength of the heat is much like a heat pad. Very effective. The bulb surface does not get as crazy hot as a ceramic heat emitter either, which is nice.
Note: If you do use decomposed granite, you may want to feed on paper or in a separate container, especially if using thawed rodents.
Added: If using decomposed granite, a piece of slate (slate cheese board on Amazon for example works well) on top of the substrate and directly under the heat lamp. The rosy will burrow under the slate. Or just a piece of cage carpet works too, or even newspaper. The rosy will thermoregulate easily with that setup.
I'm having trouble knowing what morph I got. Kinda looks like the dessert one. It was labeled as " Fancy Rosy Boa " at petsmart. I live in a small town so there's not much for breeders here.
There is a FB group called Rosy Boa Morphs. They are the best at helping. Check em out.
Do Rosy Boas need uvb
Have you done a garter snake video
Not yet! Maybe someday
I'm trying to set up a plastic tub enclosure for my new rosy boa, but in Michigan the ambient humidity is relatively higher especially in June to August(Right now in my house it's about 70-75%). Do you have any advice? Most of the websites I came across has different opinion (Some say it should be 30%, the others say 50%) Would you say that as long as there's a good amount of ventilation and air flow it should be safe?
It there is good ventilation and you use a substrate that dries with zero moisture it should he okay. You might consider a dehumidifier for the room he’s in.
What do you recommend to do for a rosy boa that just started gaining a food drive for anything? I’ve had my little girl for a while and she’s never tried to bite me once and thought I was food but all of the sudden since she’s grown she’s had more of an act of trying to eat everything that has scent.
Try to get a process for feeding that is drastically different from all other interactions. Also desensitization is helpful (aka lots of handling)
Any plans on breeding and or selling the mountain springs locale. Those are stunners!!!!!
I do indeed. I have a new adult female in quarantine now that will breed next season 👏
ReptileMountain.TV 😀 Do you have a website with pricing?
my website is www.reptilemountain.com but I don't have pricing on there for snakes. Mtn Springs Rosies go for around 125 ish usually.
Hey +Firstwhats Lastup @Firstwhats Lastup shoot me an email if you are interested in a 1.1 Mountain Springs adult pair. tc.houston@reptilemountain.com
I have no idea if anyone will see this, but I *adore* my rosy, he's perfect in every way Except that he *rarely* eats. I try to feed him weekly, trying to force feed him at this point bc he won't pay any attention to the food if I just leave it with him, but he eats less than half the time. For a while I've used Kevin from NERD's rat tail trick to get him eating, then he eats full pinkies a couple times, and then he drops off again.
He's coming up on a year old now and has barely grown, he's only shed three times, and the first was a mess because it was months overdue.
I'm working on moving him up to a better enclosure, but does anyone have tips? I love him so much, but I am so worried.
Would you suggest a humid hide when they are in shed??
I don’t. They rarely need it.
Schmedium!! 😄
Hey I understand that this video was made 2 years ago but is coconut fiber ok? I have a ton of those soil bricks left from my other reptile and I don't want to get a different substrate if I have that already. It's a soft substrate although when it's dry it doesn't feel rough but it doesn't feel as soft. Would you consider coconut fiber ok?
As long as it is totally dry yes. It hold way too much moisture when even damp it would be too much humidity.
i think my BTS has poorly eye and i dont think it got very bad yet but i started to raise the humidity, what else should i do and how do i find out if it might have a respiratory problem.
The humidity should help. Is there a visible discharge from his nose or mouth or eyes that’s a clear indicator of a respiratory infection. Of course I was suggest going to a vet to be certain.
@@ReptileMountainTV I dont see anything, other than his eye he looks to be ok. thanks for the advice i love your channel!
Hi, I am having problems getting my newborn Rosies to eat. Tried live redhots and fuzzy parts. No luck. Any ideas out there? Thank you!
This will sound mean but gently smack them on the nose with the pink until they strike and hold. It worked for me 99% of the time. If not that put them in a small deli cup under a paper towel with the pink overnight.
Thank you!!!!!!
My male albino rosy is extremely food motivated and it seems no matter how much I hold him he’s still a biter
Yep some are just food nuts. Like me in a cheesecake store. Lol
What type of heating light do you use? In reference to watts? I used a 75 watt (from Exo Terra) at first and the temp was 95, which was alarming. I changed it the next lower strength being 60 watt, which makes my young boas side 84. Is this ok?
Yes if you can have a range from 85 to 70 throughout the tank that is perfect
I use 39w halogen flood lights on a dimmer.
Do you put your rosy in a separate container to feed it?
Nope. In over 30 years Ive never had to do that aside from brand new babies needing to start feeding. 😁
I have an albino rosy boa, almost 100 percent she it’s a costal. Looking to try and breed a snow. Any tips on how to breed rosy boas?
Look up a book by Randy Limburg on the subject. He is the true expert.
Make sure the female is of age - 3 yrs old or more. Males it does not matter, just has to be mature enough to be viable. A gravid female will need a heated area up to 90-95 deg F. I used to only go into the high 80s, but I have seen much better results offering higher temps at the hotspot. That is important for gestating females.
Where did you get them from
I bred some and some I got from Mike at Forked Tounge Farms in California.
Where can I get a rosy boa under 50 pound in the uk
Hmmm. I don't know UK markets very well. I will ask around though.
So, if I have the prey driven kind (which I seem to) does that go away on it's own, or is it just something I have to work around? If this snake touches skin with it's head, then it is a bite and coil, every time. I've dealt with snakes for many years, and have been lucky that I have not had this issue before (this is my first Rosy). Fear strikes and bites are one thing. This is always a food thing. Even if it has been fed recently. I also am concerned about using all that energy to bite and coil, with no caloric payoff. Not sure if I am overthinking that one. Thanks.
Its like food and eyesight combo. Some have poor eyesight and high food drive. Desensitization has worked with mine.
Also simply not letting the face touch skin helps a ton. Not as fun but it works with those food driven ones.
Does this breed have to be brumated during winter months?
It does best when cooled, yes.
Can i go bioactive with this species?
You can but need to be mindful of too much moisture.
When you say low humidity what would be a good min/max?
I would say under 40%
Where I live the humidity is around 50-60% for the Spring and Summer, and I consider this to be high for a rosy. I have desert locality rosies, and the good ole 10 or 20 gal with a screen top has worked out for them just fine regardless. Coastal locality rosies are much more tolerant of 50-60% humidity, and I can house them in low-ventilation tubs with no problems. Anything under 50% humidity would be best for a rosy.
Note: I house baby rosies in 6-inch deli cups with holes (soldering iron) in the sides all the way around. They do fine. I do not have water in there. I give them water only about once every 2 weeks or so. They will drink from a dropper.
My rosy boa freaks out everytime I try to hold her. She has bit me 3 times in the past week and she has shown no discoloration for shedding. Do you have any idea what I can do?
Hmm that is odd. Is this a change from normal? How long have you had him?
ReptileMountain.TV I’ve only had her for 4 months! She is 6 months old. Last time she shed was two months ago but if she was shedding it would’ve happened by now because she started acting like this for about 3 weeks. She’s been getting a little better. I held her yesterday but she freaked out and was moving VERY fast so I quickly put her back. I don’t know what im doing and my mom is talking about giving her back! She just randomly started biting me one day and being very grumpy :( please help
@@stuartgilmore1700
Assuming she isn't confusing you for food and her enclosure set up lets her feel secure (at least 2 hides that have only one opening and substrate she can burrow in), make sure you're picking her up from about the middle of her body and underneath. Most snakes don't like their head touched and grabbing from above is something a predator would do so that may make her nervous/flighty. Never squeeze your snake (because again this is a predator move) but be confident. If she's being wiggly you can treadmill her a bit (let her slither along one hand then pull it back and let her climb on the other hand and repeat). Keep handling sessions short and about 3-4 times a week. Leave her alone the rest of the time. She will eventually chill out.
My question is where can one find a white one?
Try one of the rosy boa facebook groups
Are areas like Portland OR (moderately high humidity) dangerous to Rosy boas?
It should be fine as long as you have ventilation.
@@ReptileMountainTV Thank you!!
Can you recommend any breeders far this snake? I am struggling to find one that sells rosys
Forked Tongue Farms in Cali or Topline Constrictors in Colo or Jersey Shore Rosies in New Jersey.
@@ReptileMountainTV thank you!! I will look into them
"If your bowie .. boa..."
I now have a name for a boa, should I ever get one. I also now have an entire naming scheme for Boas as well. David, Bowie, Ziggy, Stardust, Major Tom, Action Man.
Do you breed rosy boas by the way?
Try to 😁... yes but not every year
Dang rosy crawl or ball python hmmmm
Can you use a bioactive cage with them
You can, however humidity is not good for rosys so the moisture needed for the clean up crew can be detrimental to the rosy.
@@ReptileMountainTV ya thats what I was thinking so probly best not to for a beginner probly best for a crawl boa or a ball
I didn't know about the whole f1/f2 thing. I am getting my mountain spring rosy yearling female soon, that I have on deposit with extraordinary ectotherms. Also, have reserved a hatchling male with forktongue farms, but I have no idea whether they are f1/f2, and was planning to breed them together. ive seen photos of them and imo they are very beautiful examples of what the locality is supposed to look like, if they are in fact not true f2 I still will breed them. if potential customers ask I will be honest with them, but like you said, it shouldn't matter as long as you're not doing any intentional trait breeding. I would much rather have them be less inbred, even though I know snakes can handle a little of inbreeding, but why wouldn't it be better to avoid doing it more than necessary? If they're the same locality they're all distant cousins in some respect, but that'd be better than continuously breedinga snake with its direct ancestor.
In the wild, rosies have a limited gene pool for sure, but there is still enough variation for them to be healthy. It has been shown that females tend to choose mates with less "relatedness" when multiple mates are available.
You really don't know if the EE rosy came from the same stock as the FF rosy, but if both animals are healthy and robust, there should not be a problem.
That said, I have a few mixed-locality rosies that nobody wanted, and honestly, they are just bullet-proof. I love those things. I am also very partial and true to certain localities that I have hunted. I guess it is hypocritical of me, but aren't we all a bit hypocritical?
Fact: Rosy Boas are one of the easiest snakes to keep.
Agreed
Can a male and female be housed together without issues like garters?
I do for breeding season. Feeding time is the part that is tricky.
Rosies are not communal except maybe as babies. During breeding season, a male or males may stay with a female for a time, but after that they go their separate ways. So, that is how you should keep them.
Do you sell? Where can I buy?
I do. ReptileMountain.com
