Vocal coach, Valerie White Williams, reacts to beloved Norwegian singer, Sissel, singing Slow Down by Chuck Girard, arranged by Sam Cardon for the 2019 Pioneer Day Concert with the Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square.
    Lyrics:
In the midst of my confusion
In the time of desperate need
When I am thinking not too clearly
    A gentle voice does intercede
Slow down, slow down, be still
Be still and wait, on the Spirit of the Lord
Slow down and hear His voice
And know that He is God
    In the time of tribulation
    When I'm feeling so unsure
When things are pressing in about comes a gentle voice so still, so pure
Slow down, slow down, be still, my child
Be still and wait, on the Spirit of the Lord
Slow down and hear His voice
And know that He is God
And know that He is God

This is peak Sissel. I had the great opportunity to attend this concert. Sissel had performed with the Tabernacle Choir previously for their annual Christmas concert, which I was also fortunate enough to attend. Her voice is like crystal. So clear, shimmering, and radiant. But it can also sometimes feel cold. BUT hearing this song in-person was like being wrapped in a warm blanket of pure love. It was during the song that the audience realized that we were experiencing something truly remarkable. The pause at the end before the eruption of a standing ovation felt like an eternity of solemn stillness. The ovation continued to build as Sissel reacted because the appreciation was absolutely mutual. It was spiritual, breathtaking, and utterly unforgettable.

I love this song. No one could ever replicate how Sissel performed it on that night. The stars came together, the angels bowed in humble acknowledgment, and all of us held our collective breaths as she brought us as close as she could to Celestial comfort.
I was in a very, very dark place when this song came out. I have listened to it 100s of times. The way she sings it is just the way I imagine God's loving voice, "my child." 'Just hang on a little longer.' I am better now, but I would credit this song and the way Sissel sings it to be a "light-sabre" for those of us whose burden is darkness and sadness. It pierces any lack of hope and brings it back into focus.
God bless Sissel and the Tabernacle Choir. I am very sure I am not the only one who feels this way.
By the way, I loved the word you used to describe it, "sublime." I used "etherial." Thank you. I am glad I came on this...

Fun fact: Sissel is the voice behind several haunting pieces of music in 'Titanic'. She was supposed to sing 'My heart will go on' as well, but it ended up being gifted to Celine Dion at the last minute.

Yes, Sissel is the "Sound Of Titanic" and she was supposed to sing "My Heart Will Go On" but her management bungled the deal and it was given to a Sony Artist in Celine Dion.
Sissel did however, sing "My Heart Will Go On" in the 3D Premeire of TITANIC which I have included in the following link. ruclips.net/video/Lh7Pq5U2AQw/видео.html. Also next from the same premiere is her Titanic Aria from the movie ruclips.net/video/2OVA6AvJXMA/видео.html

Everything is still the same, as if time stands still. It has appeared around the world of young talented singers and attracted the attention of many. But Sissel is still ahead of everyone. Because she is not only a Norwegian, but also a world jewel. Her memorable interpretations (Albinoni’s Adagio i.e., duets with Pavarotti, Carerras and others, numerous songs from various fields of music, from pop to opera) are an elusive dream for everyone today. And now in her 50s she is at the very top. It’s nice to know that there is someone to inherit it, but right now no one is that category. ❤❤❤❤❤

Knight of the Order of St. Olav Lady Sissel Kyrkjebø has sung duets with artists such as Plácido Domingo, Charles Aznavour, José Carreras, Neil Sedaka, Brian May, Bryn Terfel, Josh Groban, Diana Krall, Russell Watson, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Mario Frangoulis. She also participated in the Titanic soundtrack in 1997 and toured with the Irish band The Chieftains. In 1997 she also sang duet with Warren G on the song "Prince Igor". Kyrkjebø sings mainly in Norwegian and English, and has also sung songs in Swedish, Danish, Irish, Italian, French, Russian, Icelandic, Faroese, German, Neapolitan, Catalan, Maori, Japanese, Latin and Spanish.
Sissel is one of the worlds best crossover sopranos ( If not the best ). She newer wanted to be a superstar, for Sissel family and freedom to sing what she wants was more importent.
In my view Sissel is almost the perfect rolemodel for new singers like Angelina Jordan.

This was not JUST a "performance". It was a ministration by God - with His Spirit working through a yielded vessel who was pleased to allow Him to use the tremendous, other-worldly gift and talent that she was given so that God might express His Love and Peace to a hurting, broken world !!
Listen to her voice - perfect in tone, pitch and cadence - drawing you into that STILL, quite place. Look at her face - the embodiment of peace, calm, love and joy. See how she uses her body-language and the gestures of her hands to calm, soothe and direct. Throughout the song, but especially at the end with her hands folded over her heart in prayer - she is transcended into the song and into the presence of God, beckoning all who are there to come join her. God is beckoning to ALL who will hear, "Come, be still before me, find the peace that you yearn for, and KNOW that I am God!!"
This "Spiritual Journey" was NOT lost on the orchestra, choir or the audience in attendance. They may not have known EXACTLY what it was that they had just experienced, but they DEFINITELY knew that it was something that transcended everyday experience. They reacted by the standing ovation that they honored Sissel with !!

She is a grown woman now, and her voice has matured; still, her tonal purity of voice has grown with her, and is interesting to compare to her performance in Solveig's Song. From what I understand, you could have heard a pin drop inside the Tabernacle even filled with 19,000 people. Never before has a performer received a standing ovation in that hall. This was a deeply moving performance, sung by the best.

Since you (too, like many other) admire her voice..
I remember in 1985 our TV was on, and a entertainment program with song was playing, and me being 17 year old male teen was not particularly interested. Yet suddenly I stopped, a crystal clear vocal had entered the stage, and I could not help but walk over to the TV to see who had this amazing voice. That was the first time I heard the name Sissel Kyrkjebø. It was not the last for sure. This was the moment she became known to all of Norway.
I found this performance, so sharing it. Though her voice and control has been greatly developed since then, you can clearly hear the raw talent she possessed even at a young age.

This is probably one of the greatest live performances ever. Her low key approach to this melodic prayer is just spectacular.
I don't have a religious bone in my body, but for me this is the proof that talent and music cross-borders believes and lifestyles.
I'm a jazz/rock ateist that happends to love some of the the melodies of religious music. And she must be the number one profet of that genre.
This was just spectacular in a way that no one can ignore.

This duet is an undiscovered gem. It would be great if there was a live performance of it in front of an audience.

Norway has actually two written languages (bokmål and nynorsk). In bokmål the country is named NORGE, and in nynorsk they say NOREG. Both versions are to be seen on the banknotes. The story say that someone came into a bank in Sweden and wanted to exchange some Norwegian banknotes. But that didn't go well. The Swedish bank employees said that they knew how to spell Norge (Norway) so the banknotes were false and called police..... Hahaha.... Swedes know almost zero about Norway haha....

The "carrier" of the movie Titanic. She did all the aries and non vocal parts, and created the mood throughout the movie. It is a shame that it is Celine Dion who stole the limelight, she was not even ment to sing "My Heart Will Go On", but she got it from James Cameron to kickstart her american career. Sissel got to do "her" song in the live premiere of the movie, Celines version cant compare.

When you're talking big budget movies, it will always come down to safe bets. Celine Dion was known in USA where Kyrkjebo was an unknown at that time. Dion had a proven track record singing movie songs. When Horner happened to hear a CD of Sissel singing in Norwegian, he knew he had just heard the voice he had been looking for all along. But it was too late, yet he managed to get Siss to do the track intonations.

@@noriemeha Horner wrote the song for Sissel to sing. He offered the rights to the soundtrack to Sissel’s label, PolyGram, but they didn’t want to spend $1million for the rights. Sony bought the rights, but insisted on a Sony artist to sing the theme song. That is how Celine came to sing it.
