Yes, a xenomorph's build depends on the host. So yes, this is a 'dog' xenomorph. A xenomorph bursted out of a human's chest you are able to see the human skull inside the 'dome' of the xenomorph.
I personally prefer the original and the sequel 'Aliens'. What makes it extra creepy is the erotisism of the xenomorph and all xenomorph related stuff. Like the entrance to the crashed spaceship in 'Alien' being vaginas and were designed to look like that. These 'indirect' connections to erotisism makes the horror more effective as we feel more unease with these present. Because as humans we are the most vulnerable when being undressed and naked. Which is also a strong point at the end of 'Alien' when Ripley undresses and the xenomorph is waiting, watching untill she's undressed before showing itself. This same psychological effect is used with the facehuggers. They raip their victim by putting their 'penis' in the mouth, throat and only let go when 'the deed' is done.
I think these are strong points that make viewers feel more unnerving when watching Alien or Aliens.
I've been a huge Alien fan and i have seen them all many many times. To this day there hasn't been a follow up on Alien and Aliens that has the quality of those 2. So i hope Alien: Romulus will become the 3rd movie the franchise deserves.
Instead of Alien³, Alien: Resurrection, Prometheus and Alien: Covenant.

I don't like this one more than the previous 2 but I do like A LOT of things from this movie. Like when the prisoners get motivated and do that suicide mission. It's not bad like a people say. Sadly the production was a nightmare with all the script changes and how Fincher was controlled and lot of other things. You guys should watch the "Director's Cut (it's not an actual director's cut bucause Fincher was not involved and it's more of a special edition) but it has some newer scenes and different structure in some bits. It's better. I wish they let Fincher did his movie like he wanted. We'll never get so see his vision on it.

Yeah Fincher really got shafted on this one, I’m glad that he was able to move past it and make some great films
