I found this whole thing really sad. Whenever the musicians weren't in use, it looked like they turned into manikins. The applause was synchronized, and the audience was watching it like they were expecting to go into battle any moment. I can't imagine how the women still kept smiling despite their serious faces. The music reminded me of the music the soviets would play for their propaganda. Very theatrical music and slide presentation. There were some nice pictures of green pastures and a lovely beach (obviously not their country). But they were shown quickly, which I thought was interesting. So sad.

when musicians don’t play they’re supposed to do that. the reason they all pose like that is because most violinists (for example) put the butt of their violin on their knee, and the bottom of the bow on the other.

There's also another north korean youtuber that was an elite in north korea too. I'm guessing she must keep in contact with the refugees for information, and perspective from people who lived complete different lives because of their social class. She's also mentioned she was from a very low caste back in north Korea, and it's always the people with the worst lives in the bottom of the social class that know the real tea☕.

I think the tone is similar to the propaganda female newscaster we see a lot. Rather than just saturated with excitement and intense adoration (like the broadcaster) their voices are also shaking with something synthetic and sappy which I can only imagine is the tone for reflecting on the past year and being extremely positive/"hopeful" for next year.

It's a dialect. It's the strong mood that the singers are portraying. They're living the life in North Korean standards, though a dangerous position. I do believe most of the female singers are part of Kim's pleasure squad, or perhaps retired ones.

The "emotional swaying" for this one is so synchronized it's like it's programmed (especially when looking at the violins). Almost like... There isn't any real joy in it. And it's bizzare to hear this style of arrangement, kind of 2D and flat missing true richness and possible harmonies. I could be wrong though.

Thanks for sharing this latest PRK concert Yeonmi.👍
But good grief, unlike some of the other concerts you have uploaded, I found this one really repetitive and depressing.
The Lunar New Year is supposed to be a time of happiness. But the audience were like suited zombies:
    - Zero emotion.
    - Zero spontaneity
    - Zero enjoyment or smiles.
    - Almost zero women in the audience (99.9% men)
But Kim's sister (Kim Yo-jong) was prominently filmed at the end, enthusiastically clapping her brother. Although no sign of his wife (Ri Sol-ju) or mistress (Hyong Song-wol).
Kim looked nearly bored to sleep throughout the concert, before managing to waddle onto the stage to the usual choreographed adulation and cheering.
What a sad and dreary spectacle for the PRK to start the New Year... 😔

That march that they always start with, regardless if it's a parade or some other event like this concert, is that some kind of theme song for the party? Or for the Kims? It's obvious that it has as special place in the Hermit Kingdom, but yet I know it isn't the national anthem. What is it?

As someone who has played in orchestras and bands, I noticed in the first 20 minutes.
    1. The near constant emotional sways are overdramatic and SYNCHRONIZED in the string players. It makes the whole orchestra look wiggly and strange. It also looks strange when the singers do it. (Probably made to do this to show the world how "happy/proud" they are.)
    2. When not playing, the musicians are stock still making #1 even creepier to me. If you look at the cellos even their bows are at rest in the same areas and do NOT move.
    3. Their arrangement for the chairs of the strings in strange. Usually the whole group is in a fan shape to help the sound play toward the audience... Not towards the other half of the orchestra.
    4. I can't place it but their instruments match eachother so well. AND they're in "top" condition. The bodies of the strings are incredibly shiny. I'm not spotting and kind of individual marks or scuffs or patina on any of the instruments. This doesn't mean at all they're quality or well cared for. It's more of a sign they're new and specifically selected to look shiny and new on camera. (They could sound like crap.) It also means the musicians might not get to use their own choice of instruments... Only what is approved, no matter the quality or sound.
    5. It's a military group but the stone cold faces when they play their instruments weirds me out. I played for years and I've seen what the looks of focus are and that right there is a joyless "at attention" stare.
I have to wonder what kind of music would come from North Korea if it's people were free. What would their voices and instruments sound like? What would their faces and body movements express?

Also, this was not all filmed in one sitting. Hands down. There are some editing mistakes showing it. I wouldn't be surprised if the audience taping wasn't even at the concert.
The lighting is similar to lighting I've experienced in China, which my orchestra had no control over.
38:30 blue light like that makes it hard to read music
43:00 red light like that is almost just as bad
I've never played in or watched a western orchestra use lights like that. Only in Asia.

World class musicians. The whole production. Even down to the camera angles and sound mixing. North Koreans always demonstrate how resourceful they are. I mean, they are an impoverished country with heavy sanctions but they pull off stuff like this. Even the instruments. They have Pearl Masters Drums, Paiste Gongs, Fender Stratocaster guitars, top class brass and woodwind instruments. Just wow!

Do you know how hard it is to pretend you are perfect at a job interview? Try doing that for the party 24/7 for every day of your life. That single reason alone should be enough to wake us up about the dangers of communism.
