The inscriptions on other monuments of the 14th century can no longer be read due to the poor condition, although some of them can be identified on the basis of Firkowicz’s map. 25 epitaphs of the 15th century and 63 from the 16th century has been preservedi. From every of the next centuries (17th, 18th, and 19th) 800 - 1000 epitaphs survived; several hundred inscriptions could not be dated exactly because of poor conditions. The most recent burials at the cemetery took place in the mid 20th century.
Firkowicz proves the existence of this mythical “era” with the help of the epitaph of Esther, daughter of Shelomo (real date - 1476). In the printed version of Firkowicz’s book, it has two dates: one according to the ancient Crimean era (it’s designated as the era from the Creation), and the other according to the so called Matharchean (allegedly, this era was used by the Jews living in the city of Matarcha, on the Taman Peninsula in Russia, and was equal to the regular era from the Creation.) But neither in the drafts of the Avnei Zikkaron, nor at the copy made by Firkowicz on the tombstone after the original inscription was sawed off, we can’t find any traces of the Matharchean era, and this is the undisputable prove that the “Ancient Crimean” era was invented by Firkowicz.

1st line. It seems to read Mr, but from the context it is probably meant to be Mrs.

(the "honored Rabbi" is my interpertation of the abbreviations, and is a costumary inscription whcich can be written for anyone, and does not tastify for any special role in life)
On the side:
1. (first word I cannot decipher) .. her "youth-age chamopin" (costumary poetic reference to her husband)
2. In bitter soul
3. On the day of Tuesday 13 of Tevet (Hebrew month)
4. passed away
5. In the year, (I'm not sure but it seems to be 5466) since .. (not sure what the last word is)

Dear Max and Julia, thank you for this wonderful video. It's very interesting. As a speaker of both Turkish and Hebrew I can say the following: The Hebrew inscriptions on the tombstones give information about the person buried there, such and such died etc. I couldn't read everything as I am not familiar with ancient Hebrew. Hoca in Turkish means Master, Teacher, a respected person. (pronounced Hoja). Kale means fortress. Tatar is a Turkic language. Although Turkish speakers cannot understand spoken Tatar very easily, there are a lot of common words. Sorry for not writing in Russian. Typing in Russian takes me a very long time :-). Happy new year!

I love it this video! Very interesting, I lived in yalta , near, Pushkinna, place there are also a very old monastery. but destroyed
the "small prunes" are blackthorn berries, (latin: prunus spinosa), called Тёрн in russian. no need to discard them, they taste great when you make jam from them, and they get less sour when they ve been in freezing weather some time, sometimes so sweet that they are actually agreeable to eat raw from the bush :)
great video as always (your videos are almost too god, because they keep me from studying vocabulary, which is as important as getting a feel for the language, but much less entertaining).

Very interesting! Why are these epitaphs written in Hebrew? Did Jews live in Crimea? Or are they legendary Khazar people, who were converted to Judaism? Really interesting.
Ничего если я отвечу на русском?) Эпитафии написаны на древнееврейском, так как это был религиозный(!) язык караимов. Однако, караимы говорили на языке, который похож на татарский(на тюркский). Этнически караимы были евреями, но, вероятно, имели татарскую и возможно даже хазарскую кровь(то есть были отчасти хазарами, но это лишь гипотеза). Есть несколько версий: есть версия, что караимы - это потомки хазар, а есть версия, что караимы пришли в Крым вместе с татарами в XIII-XIV вв. Кстати, караимы отрицали Талмуд и признавали только Ветхий Завет(первую часть Библии).
@@RussianWithMax Yes, this is interesting. I knew there were Karayim in Crimea. They also lived in Turkey. I am afraid I know very little about their history. Bravo Max for being so knowledgeable in history and linguistics :-).
I tried to read the Hebrew. I managed to read the names and some of what's written about the buried person: Dear, educated, pure, soul, the date of the person's death etc.
What is even more interesting is that this particular set of Jews, do not conform to the Talmud. These Karaite Jews hold fast to the Torah in its original context. Very interesting.

One look at the map and it´s clear you couldn´t have known it from your area in NW Russia! However, the sloes are fairly tasty after some frost which destroys the stringency.
You are right. In central France, when I was a child I ate them after the frost because the stragency wears off. 40 years ago, there were old people who distilled to make alcohol. People told me it was very tasty alcohol. I never tried.

@@cyrillederory5540 Nooo...make your own. A quarter bottle of sloes picked just after the first frost, coated in sugar, then top up with gin. Leave 3-6 months. You can come and pick ours, we are only half an hour from Plymouth.

@@RussianWithMax Спасибо! Слово плато взято из французского, и по-моему у них всегда или почти всегда ударение падает на окончание. И в нашем слове plateau, ударение так же падает на окончание. Поэтому мне было немножко странно услышать плАто. Но знание о том, какие "ошибки" часто делают носители тоже своего рода информация. Так что спасибо! 😁

Max, you used "ку́шать" to say "to eat". In many forums I found that this verb is quite ancient and rarely used in the first person. So, why did you use it?
