He was told by the Black Bulls that were captured by her before (when Dorothy was possessed by an elf) that they could make her pop up basically anything once it was mentioned out loud. So when he was captured by her during the Magic Knights Captains battle, he proceeded to mention a few Japanese dishes. It unfortunately didn't work because she had no idea what he was talking about. Therefore, these dishes are not common or even heard of in the Clover Kingdom. I felt for him in that moment. Poor guy probably misses those childhood dishes so much.
Yamis voice actor also voiced Grimmjow from Bleach and Archer from Fate/stay night. This means that if you ever wonder what yami would sound like singing, just listen to the bleach concept cover for the ending echos or rise from the fate/ stay soundtrack.

Yami's father is likely a very important local leader with a title like Village chieftain or town mayor. Yami's ability to be aware of Chi can be a result of being train by an expert in the martial arts. The Clover Kingdom is well aware of the Land of the Rising. The nation known as the Land of the Rising can be known as Nippon, too. Nippon is likely more interest in trade with the four kingdoms than in conflict. It may have closer ties to the Clover Kingdom. If Yami's family has a lot of power, they will have likely sent someone to the Clover Kingdom to find Yami. The Wizard King had found Yami before his family did. A sign of the fact that Yami's family don't mind Yami being a Magic Knight is Yami's Katanna. Yami's family had given Yami his katanna as a gift after he join the Magic Knights.

Regarding #5, with SPOILERS about anime episode 69 : Yami appears to have a knack for saving beautiful girls. When Charlotte turned 18, her curse was activated and she was completely overwhelmed by her magic, I knew full well that Yami would show up to rescue her, her family and her people, in a scene which kind of mirrored his rescuing of Vanessa. So this, and his words to her, is how Yami "stole her heart" and inadvertently broke her curse. I liked that Yami appeared to pretend that he was unaware that she lost control of her magic, so that she doesn't offend her, while talking to her in a very direct, "street smart", nearly rude way, about which she could take a very different kind of offence (since she is "royalty", which of course Yami does not give half a rat's ass about, just as he should).
i think that yami's team is called black bulls because in the japanese mythology a black bull helps creating the world (sorry if some words are wrong english is my second language)
If I were to guess why Asta is less popular than Yami in the west, it would probably be their VA. If it was sub, a lot of people probably find Asta's voice annoying, if it was dub people like Christopher Sabat a lot more. But yeah Yami is also badass and for Asta people love an underdog so it varies.
