from maybe a little bit of personal experience, i wouldnt go as far as saying its an irrational fear anymore, but i do struggle with the fear of falling asleep. for me its the aspect of becoming unconscious and giving up control. that tied with being scared of dreaming (not even bad dreams, just again the unknown uncontrollable part) creates a panic where it is really hard. it does invoke insomnia but the anxiety does make it somewhat voluntary. for me it definitely comes in waves, sometimes i wont think twice and then ill be scared for a couple weeks. its also the thought that because you are unconscious you have no control of the world around you and no concept of time passing. the idea of intruders, housefires, sleepwalking, and basically anything becomes more anxiety inducing which for me manifests in a fear of actually falling asleep
I have narcolepsy so I can confirm from personal experience that sleep is CRAZY. I get hallucinations, sleep paralysis, interrupted sleep, and cataplexy is a whole other fucking issue. Chronic illness is a bitch.

I’d love to see an episode on your guys views on some different psychological approaches such as biological, cognitive etc and maybe do a quiz to see which you align with, discuss some researches for each etc, I find it fascinating and think you guys would vibe with it!😁👍🏻

I have a stupidly rare neurological disorder called Kleine-levin syndrome (aka sleeping beauty syndrome). When it happens, I sleep for about 20-22 hours a day (like a koala lol) for roughly two weeks. Some people are stuck in episodes for months. The dreams are insane! And then, when you start recovering, you get crippling insomnia for a while. Sending the best vibes to people going through any sleep issues as it really does suck & I hope it gets better for you!! 🤍

What they were talking about with being trapped in a room to test their sleep and see what cycles they’d follow has actually been tested before by someone called Siffre. He stayed in a cave for a few months and took note of when he slept and woke up and his sleep wake cycle extended from 24 to 26~ hours (iirc). He also repeated this study multiple times, both by himself and with groups of people. Super interesting topic :3
I worked at a nursing home and daylight savings sucked because the residents wouldn't have the right time on their clocks in their rooms and it caused chaos every time. It was a nightmare.
the guy that tried to go for the record, kept switching streaming platforms because he kept getting banned since he was endangering himself. he ended up streaming the whole thing. and his “friends” (i wouldn’t call them friends after this) but they would splash water on him, and shake him back awake. and they had the police called on them for a wellness test but nothing was done. before he finished, one of his “friends” tried to get him to go for another 24 hours, luckily he didn’t. and after he finished the stream, he then did a “longest sleep stream” which again kept getting banned and they had to switch platforms. he’s aussie and people kept doxxing him to try and keep him safe. idk how he’s doing now, but somehow he was okay, atleast based on the end of the sleep stream.
Kinda crazy that Bach and Arthur talked about archnophobia and somniphobia in this episode. I have both, if I find a spider in my room that day I force myself to stay awake, because after I see a spider I get freaked out for a whole week sometimes. Tbh I dont even understand why, I just do it 😭

Anybody that goes to bed and can just sleep should appreciate it so much! I started to develop insomnia in 2021 and it's horrible.
I agree. It takes me having a eye mask on which darkens out everything and ear plugs in, that is the only way I can go to sleep normally
