- what happens if you don't activate windows 10? nothing, but Microsoft terms of service states. "You are authorized to use this software only if you are properly licensed and the software has been properly activated with a genuine product key or by other authorized method." so in theory, you are supposed to activate Windows 10 to use it. You will have some restrictions like, no lock screen, background, wallpaper settings, colors, taskbar, all will be grayed out.

the thing is my windows 10 install always start to show some problems 6 months after a fresh install so i got fed up with it and am using an unauthorised copy of windows 10 ltsb
On my latest build 2 months. My brother's PC 2-3 he years. I have another PC that I use a key from those key selling website. All have no issues.

I’ve been using Windows since Windows 7, when I received it on CD. When I switched to a download copy, activation failed (so long ago I can’t remember when), I’ve been unactivated. I even called Microsoft tech support for assistance activating my copy of Windows and got to a level 3 tech and no one down there was able to activate my copy. I’ve never run into anything I couldn’t do with my unactivated copy.

Had to cover all bases, people will always complain whether its to short or to long, to much info, not enough info. I can't win.

Windows 8.1 legit user but don't really pay much attention to products key untill updated to win10 and never activated as don't remember the key. Now machine isn't booting at all even tried everything. Bought new ssd and installed win10 today itself without an activation key...your video pops up and glad that I could go on...
They want your personal data, so you are a cash cow to them, whether 10 is activated or not.
If you don't want your information getting out there stay off the internet, don't use a credit card or a smart phone and live under a rock. Paranoid much?

This was a problem I got after buying a computer in Thailand a while back. It did not take too many weeks before I started to get all these annoying messages that I had to activate win 10! It was bothering me a lot! The shop had given me a copy of win 10 without an activation number!!
I solved it by downloading some sort of code that faked the activation code. I am not sure if it will work when I eventually get back to Thailand to try to run the pc again!

Sorry if this is a question you've answered before! I have an old work computer and I'm backing up Documents and Pictures with a bunch of folders that have [Date Modified] times going back years (2013-2021). When I transferred these folders to a 32GB usb all the old timestamps transferred over, but when I move these folders from the usb to my new PC all the [Date modified] times change over to Today. I know the individual files themselves retain their original timestamps, but is there a way to have the original folders also retain their original timestamps? When looking for files I often go by the year the folders were modified. If I can't keep the original timestamps on the folders I might end up just working off of the usb instead. Thanks, Britec09!
So basically it's ok to use windows 10 without a key for virtual box machines. Is that what you do Brian? I've always wondered what people do for their virtual machines for testing and things
Just use hyper -v or windows sandbox that what I do when I need to test something.
The background screen color may also default to black. That's what happens with Win7.

ive a copy of win10 pro which has been running unactivated and debloated using a script. ram usage went from 4gb out of the box to roughly 1.5gb so even works on older pcs
you can basically just use it. unlike windows 8.1, windows 10 doesn't have a full screen pop-up when windows isn't activated.
Been using windows 10 for around 7+ years and you can easily use it and bypass a lot like startup background, taskbar being locked and OBVIOUSLY wallpaper...these days you can bypass pretty much anything.
I cant restart in Safe Mode. I've tried the bcdedit hack, the f8 method and everything else. I assumed it was because my downloaded and verified copy of Windows 10 is not activated. You can do some customizing of things like lock screen and desktop background by using Paint and File Explorer without activating windows.
hey man, whats the worst thing that can happen by activating Windows? Ive never activated it in years and now that no one uses the computer it except me I wanted to personalise it to my taste and do a little cleaning, my CPU is at 100% all the time

A few years ago, Microsoft put out a Little Program, for Activating Microsoft Office. The only thing was, It also Activated All versions of Windows as well. Just a Minute or so with this Progam, and You will have a Legit Version of Windows. Used It myself on Hundreds of PC's and Laptops. And all are still running today.

I’ve used one on Windows 11
It just did on mine. I used a legit win7 ultimate key and it took. You just can't reuse a key you already used on another computer depending on the key.

My pc ran into an issue then I resetted it.
In the setup menu it was having issue with there was a problem try again later on the basics.
Then I somehow bypassed it which idk how then when I boot up my pc my pc was switched on and then no apps at all no WiFi button only taskview and recycle bin.

I installed a new SSD to my laptop and I put my old HDD into my wife’s laptop as her hard drive was corrupted and wouldn’t boot into Windows (7). My old HDD had a genuine and activated version of Win 10 on it. Now that it’s in a different machine it’s showing the activation watermark and no personalisation is possible, which is not a problem. But apart from that Windows works fine but for how long I don’t know.
I basically had the same situation. I installed an M.2 in one machine but the hdd was a working legal W10 unit I removed after cloning. 6 months later my daughter's hdd crashed so I installed my original hdd into her machine. Microsoft ok'd the install through my Microsoft account. Both hdd's had W10 perhaps that was why it allowed it. I was worried that it would see the same activation code on two machines but it worked anyway.
u know the funny thing is that I thought that I'd only have to buy a license key and activate Windows once and that key would be binded to my Microsoft account but it seems that's not the case
OEM keys are not transferable, only retail keys are.

I do not use any Windows OS (Unactivate versions) since I was a kid. I do not see the point/logit of not getting a license. You just need to pay once and you use it untill your hardware fails. Then you get a new hardware, it comes with the lastest Windows at that point of buying. I don;t think I'll use an unactivated Windows, as I'm used to the "basic features" of windows.
You don't own Windows 10/11 , you are paying to use it , Microsoft has the capability to disable it at any time

@@peterv1436 I agree with you. This is why my normal pcs run linux, and game dev/gaming rig runs windows. My music producer buddy also uses windows for the same reason, he says setting up reaper plugins on linux is a nightmare.
But for normal media consumption and non game dev development, it works just fine.
@@therebelliousgeek4506 The big deal breaker for me is music. Aside from getting MIDI controllers and other hardware to work reliably with linux almost all the decent VSTis I want to use are Mac or Windows only and I have invested a fair bit of money into some of them. I prefer Ubuntu for general web and admin use as it is inherantly more secure and less creepy than Windows, but it seems Win 10 doesn't like to dual boot (didn't seem to be a problem with Win 7) so while I only have one PC and I want to work on my music I am having to choose Windows unfortunately.
@@peterv1436 I can 100% relate to you. Same happens in game dev, you had to build unreal engine from source a while awhile ago in linux, and unity just straight up lacks basic features like resolution scaling and testing stuff is is weird too. And since I am targeting windows as my platform, testing on windows makes more sense, I think.
And my producer friend also says the exact same things as your previous reply about vsts and midi devices. He's a reaper simp though.
