I’m a Karmy and that’s right. If you know the Korean, it’s a jaw dropping!!! It’s impossible to translate Korean to English perfectly. Bts’s lyrics are genius. When Bts uses a word, that has more than 3meanings and pronunciation make different meanings too. A lot of translations are omitted.

suga’s cypher 3 bar about his tongue is his running joke about his tongue technology (aka fast rap technique). he actually literally said his tongue skills “will take you to hongkong” which is a slang for orgasm bc it’s like seeing all the “lights” in a skyscraper city at night. basically it implies his rapping skills will give anyone an “eargasm”

The western industry knows bts' power. That's why they use them for clout. They invite them to grammys coz they need viewers and ratings but they won't give them the award or nomination in the major category coz they don't want to acknowledge their talent or impact. They've been ignoring BTS for 3 years hoping they're like a typical boyband who'd disband and lose popularity. 7 years into their career, they're still going strong and they keep growing in terms of popularity, sales, numbers etc. The radio stations invite them for interviews but never plays their songs. The award shows invite them but never nominate them for major categories. They refuse to treat them the same as the western artists even though they do so much better than those artists. Namjoon aka RM even said in an interview they feel alienated in america and that's sad. Bts' western interviews are always about 3 things collabs, fav colour, fav food. They don't even ask anything about the production, song writing etc. BTS stopped caring about western interviews now. It's hilarious to see them just doing their own thing in the interviews. They are heavily mistreated and nobody's talking about this except armys

there are some exceptions tho like zach sang for example, he asks legit questions about their music and art. and bts at the mess was funny, Liam from J-14 isn't bad he seems nice. And I also don't mind James Corden, him and Jimin hit it off. Although I can't say that show is perfect and it still managed to lack some understanding culture wise, its ALOT better than any of the stuff they had to do. Other than the ones I listed, I literally can't watch american interviews because its so cringey watching normie americans being lowkey internally xenophobic & not recognizing their micro aggressions like that one radio show where the caller was asking them/begging them for an english album. RM was so pissed!! Lol.

@@cheyenneweston478 , lately my favorite was the interviewer from Apple music. The questions were so good and deep, not cringey, and clearly Zane have listening bunch of BTS' song. All the members especially Namjoon and Yoongi were impressed with Zane's sincerity at the end of interview.

@@aleshaw4762 Same... the only interviews I liked were the Zane Lowe one and the Zach Zang one, nothing else, and they don't even give them a translator, so RM is always talking and translating the others, lately some of them like Jin and Tae don't even speak too much on western interviews, they seem bored...It's frustrating and sad that they will keep them in a box untill their military or whatever that might happen, and will treat them like a korean 1D that had a big crazy fandom (because for them the Army are 13-15th years old girlies)... but that's it, so sad. I feel like BH is being completely brainwashed by the US Music Industry 😔

@@irina8120 yes you can see their enthusiasm change from first interview with western media until now. I remember what Halsey said to them after their performing at BBMA 2019 : "I hope you guys have better/good feeling about America, there is a good people in here too" - something like that if I'm not forget. From that statement I wonder what was going on to them behind the screen.

I’ve been ARMY since 2016, I’m now 67. I found BTS by way of Kdramas which I found via anime. I fell for the dance skills and the energy. Then I started reading the lyrics, seeing the message and the passion behind the message, and the sincerity behind the passion.

Thank you! I am one of the ones where it went in reverse. My then 13yr old girl & I were going thru the typical pulling away and mom is not cool anymore phase. She knows how much I LOVE all types of music. Last summer she came to me and wanted me here BTS. They were ok. I liked them. It spiraled from there. Baloo is not your typical teen. When she saw that I liked them she started showing more songs. She told me I was not allowed to watch anything without her. 🤣 Baloo was firm that we had to start at the beginning so I could really get to know them. So in June I started my education from the professor in regards to Kpop & BTS. It has been the best thing. It has made us have deep conversations about depression, anxiety, self image. I didn’t know that while she was in 6th grade that she was struggling with all of these. My mind was blown. I was like you have 2 loving parents. We are not rich but we are not struggling either. This opened my eyes to social media and teenagers today. I wasn’t even familiar with RUclips. Now 14 I listen to her opinions and thoughts on things and I forget that she is only 14. I didn’t even know half the crap she knows at 14. I am so grateful that the 7 young men are her role models. I love that she will give me a story behind the music before she plays it. Now we watch all kinds of things together from Anime, horror movies, Kpop shows & music. I was fully prepared to have her ignore for the next few years so to have her hanging out and engaging has been a blessing. Finally bragging on my punk: she can fully rap Suga’s part on Cypher 2 at the same speed.😱 you should really watch the medley. It just gets both us jumping up & down.

korean rapping is really unique in the fact that many mc's use korean wordplay and puns. the korean language is filled with these puns and wordplay, either with 2 words that are similar to each other or sound the same. we have them too, like they're, their, and there. (for example. Sagwa = apple, but Sagwa also means apologize. ) So with these clever things, MCs often use them in their lyrics. Not to mention the Korean language also has a very rich history, and in that come "sayings" or what they call proverbs. They derive from their traditional language. They play with these alot in rap. There is literally too many to count, but if you look up "korean proverbs" there will be lists of them. So when you see lyrics that look a little strange or sound a bit fantasy-like or nonsensical, its probably because they are referencing proverbs. (Alot of the times they try to make it witty and reference them while tying it in with modern-day things). In my opinion Korean is an amazing language to rap in because there is alot of words for rhyming potential, more so than English if I had to say. But I can give an example of a proverb from a list. Ex: "A dragon rises up from a small stream = Ancient myths relay stories about dragons rising up from the depths of the sea; therefore, it would be both unexpected and astonishing if one were to rise from a shallow stream. As such, this term is used to describe a great man or woman arising from humble beginnings."

@@baconx2690 No problem. I've been listening to khiphop for around 3 years and from listening to lyrics, and watching show me the money & unpretty rapstar, I've learned that korean proverbs are used ALOOOTTT in rap. like ALOT of times. the people who do subtitles are saviours because they usually explain the lyrics (when the lyrics are unclear) within the subtitles. Another thing is they make alot of references to other rappers or older iconic people within the K industry that we may not know of, and its interesting to look those references up in the lyrics. And they always play with alot of double meanings. Korean lyrics, whether its rap or even singing, often has stuff hidden between the lines that only Korean people truly understand and so that stuff we can try to understand and research 🤙💯

I pick up on some hidden or double meanings, but even now there's a world of stuff that goes over my head. but in general, im just passionate about the music. if i can learn something though, i love to. Lol!! i know, it must be hard. Even me who doesn't know /that/ much, its hard to put into words. But there was a time I knew nothing about the k-industry at all either. • @lastofthelapras
    @lastofthelapras 3 года назад +9

The genius of the cypher series is that it's largely in Korean, but they use English wordplay too, and the rhymes STILL work in English. Imagine trying to write a rap that rhymes in two languages. These guys play HARD.

  • @sfssfsfsf7522
    @sfssfsfsf7522 4 года назад +54

something interesting about cypher 3: it's hard to tell in the live, but when RM says he can "rap with the beatbackwards" the beat actually plays backwards for a bit.
they get really creative with their producing, actually. i think its in cypher 1, suga says he's "chopin off beat" and a piano melody plays
oh, also you kind of got it right with the part where jhope says "all you bastards who try to speak in english" cause it's translated kind of badly. He's not making fun of english-speaking rappers (though thatd be hilarious), he's making fun of korean "rappers" who try to be "hip hop" by using trendy english words in their songs when they have no idea what they're saying (and probs using the lingo wrong) wheras jhope is saying that cause he's korean, he's gonna rap well in korean and actually say something meaningful. so yeah, pretty similiar concepts.
Anyway, love your reactions. it's cool listening to someone who's really passionate about music.

I went to the rose bowl concert i'm the fan i took my daughter who is not as big of a fan i went in 2018 concert by my self at the staple center. Sorry but the music that is put out by American artist now a days is crap something has been lost and my thought is the money is more important no one is perfecting their crafting their art anymore and the actual product ! that is my opinion anyone can make music but is it meaningful quality music that is worth listing to as well as spending tons of money on I have to date have never purchased an American artist album before release or before hearing it first. But I have purchase several BTS pre-release albums without knowing the content or what it was going to sound like and so far I have not been disappointed with the quality of their music or the message they are trying to convey. I don't know about other Americans but frankly i 'm tired of the shock value videos the butts in my face by half naked dressed people doing unthinkable acts on stage and videos and the mumble rap lyrics with no meaning things are getting more tasteless each year at these award shows .

It's true about BTS I am 48 years old and got into BTS because my daughters listen to them and have listened to them for years. I did exactly like you said I was very reluctant very very hesitant to listen to BTS, one because I don't understand the language and didn't understand how you could be entertained by something that you can't possibly begin to comprehend language wise but BTS changed my mind about all that. BTS is a feeling. BTS is in a whole world by themselves, nobody can make you feel the way that BTS can make you feel and though I've gotten into some other K-pop it's nothing like the sensation that you get from listening to BTS. Monq...I had no youngster pass me the torch. But, I can honestly say from my perspective that today, there is so much trash in today's music, so much hate & evil being circulated today that even for us older generations BTS brings love, hope, dreams, courage to our world. They are a bright light in a world of darkness. They remind me of back in my day music was true music it was not superficial, it comes from within. I was very Blessed to be an 70s/80s teen a point in time where we struggled together regardless the color of our skin. We loved & respected each other. There were still struggles for many but we supported full on open hearts & minds and today society demands we all be in or stay in our own little box. Lyrics were about the heart & soul of humanity not who has a better backside for twerking or kill the one that hurt your feelings.

Why is BTS so attractive for people across all generations? Because they are no one trick ponies. They are transmitting something that has been lost long time ago and now they are reviving it - genuine, honest, humble and passionate approach towards making their music. They are wise, funny and deep. They are people´s joy, pain, inspiration, best friend, life coach, therapist, lover.... list is endless ... and they all do it in a respectful, classy way without flashed skin, obscenities and dirty tricks. Maybe a part of their success can be credited to pure luck of having them 7 meet under a lucky star and leadership called BigHit. As J-Hope so nicely expressed it in one of their interviews, them 7 getting together was no coincidence, it was destiny, fate and karma:-)

i´m going to watch a 50 minutes reaction of songs that i already listened ?? hell yea!!! MONQ thanks for reacting to this and also for music in general your reactions made think again that there is still honest people in the world .
anyway enough cheesy stuff , loved the reaction funny yesterday i was listening the cyphers and still after 7 years with bts it feels like its the first time i listen them,
    cypher 1 : haters stop
cypher 2: haters are you sure you wanna do this ?
cypher 3 : haters face the consequences !!
cypher 4 : haters are you back again ? you dont learn right
Also there is a lot of DISS to k-pop rappers there but i will leave it there, anyway enjoyed the reaction !!!
    🙌🙌🙌👏👏
PS : also i feel yes is good they have the 1st place with Dynamite in billboard BUT is an english song and not a official korean song (k-pop) so i think its well like "oh i give it to you now that you are doing an english song" and the same applies for grammys : if BTS wins a grammy with Dynamite its going to be mixed feelings for me ; good they win but bad they won but with a english song

Yeah and I think BTS knew what they were doing.
USA RADIO: You guys aren't POPULAR enough because your songs aren't in English.
BTS: OK you want a song in English? Well give you a song in English and while we're at it we will take ALL of your #1 spots from your corny top 10 artist and beat all the records on top of that oh and by the way last we checked I think Army is at 48,000,000 million solid I guess we need to work on our popularity huh?
      Lol 💙💙💙💙💙💙💙

My guy, I loved this reaction! Just subbed because I like your breakdowns and insight. As an older ARMY (48) I enjoyed the hip hop references you made from way back in the day. I used to love hip hop and rap (mc-ing) and stopped listening not long after Snoop and TuPac came out. I was so disappointed with the insurgence of crap rappers. But then I started listening again after I found BTS and their super talented rap line. They reminded me so much of the early 80's - early 90's real rappers and hip hop. Now, I'm really selective about what rapper I'll listen to. To me, they gotta have something real and smart to rap about. I don't give 2 sh*ts about their drugs, gangs, or what whore they're doing. I want real words. Real emotion. That's why I love BTS. Even when they are playing around with rap, it's still 3000 times smarter than so many other "rappers" out there.

I actually found BTS after Hwarang came out and I am a 44 year old ARMY and I loved their music and have loved it still. People around don't get it but it doesn't bother me. Right now Dynamite is the first of their songs that I've heard playing on the radio in Barbados so I w.as happy about that. I am still using it as my get ready for work song since it's so upbeat. Really enjoy your reactions and hearing the history of the music.

I loved it, thank you! 💜 Suga's lyrics are something else, Army calls him the 'savage' of the group 😂 J Hope stage presence is something else and RM what can I say about him, he's too good! I hope you can be able to watch Cypher Medley, I think I emailed you that performance, that's probably my favorite performance of the rapline and Ddaeng of course, I can't wait to see them doing 'UGH!' live on their online concert this October, I don't know if you can be able to watch it but I will try to find clips and send it to you 💜
48 MILLION ARMY WHAAT!? I mean that's for real, because they have like 28M followers just on twitter and they all Army because this group does not have the GP like Beyonce for example. So imagine being that big because your fandom is bigger than some of the population in some countries, that's crazy! Also BTS got the record of the most watched online concert, and they are always the most watched on lives, like Suga for example this year when he was explaining 'D2' on the vlive, the live ended up with 10M viewers, he has the record, considering the fact that mostly only Kpop fans and some koreans have Vlive, insane!

I think music shows and talk shows etc, have the youngest fans attend.
You can also see in concerts first day attendees are always the youngest crowd and second day attendees are often a lot older and more diverse, idk why.
I remember when my dad and my brother went to the Wembley day 1 concert they told me that the place outside was crowded and everyone was doing fan chants and that most of the people there were girls around 16-25 and that it was just chaotic. So when me and my sister went to Wembley day 2 we expected that same chaos, but everyone was acting normal, I didn't see anyone under 20 and at least every 8th person was male, the line was practically non-existent since most were already inside or hanging around and everything went smoothly. It was such a contrast to what my dad had told me.

I agree with you on basically everything in this video except the Italy and pizza thing. It definitely originated in Italy based on previous flatbread dishes way way back when and then the modern version of what we know as pizza was made in Naples starting in the 19th century (1800s). Then the Italian immigrants brought it over here to the U.S. Sorry, felt like I had to say something since my grandma came over to Ellis Island from Naples

I usually sit in the first tier. I’m 30, and I want a seat in a three hour concert lol. I’m also not all about the craziness up front BUT I love watching how excited everyone gets (from my seat haha) in the floor tier of a concert.

Honestly I'm so proud of the boys (and ARMY).. 2 weeks at 1 and now down to 2 on the Hot100 is a tremendous feat. They've been getting their number 1's without bowing down to the dirty industry rules so far - no selling condoms/pop sockets in a bid to get on the charts, no paying off radio.. I've been seeing western fandoms say that all their achievements are fandom driven, that the gp don't support them and I honestly laugh. In my opinion, any artist would kiIl to have a have a solid fanbase thats got their backs. The boys have cultivated this relationship and trust with us over the years. They also have a knack for turning gp into fans and that's not an easy feat.

Hi Monq. I know for me their meaningful lyrics, their positivity, and who they are as humble, funny, talented, handsome guys with a whole lot of swag are what attracted me to them. Plus the effect they have on people's lives, where I've read comments on RUclips how people say BTS and their music saved them in many different ways. I am totally hooked and I'm 52. BTS has piqued my interest in listening to rap again and mainstream music, especially from other international artists. I had stopped listening to R & B and only listened to Contemporary Christian music because I needed something uplifting. So now I'm expanding my horizons with music. I so appreciate your knowledge and love of music! On another note, the pizza that we know of today is similar to flatbread dishes in Naples, Italy. So it does originate from Italy and there are some places in the States that offer original Neopolitan pizza which looks nothing like the pizza here. I consider myself a pizza aficionado lol. Thanks again for the great reaction!

Speaking of how BTS' lyrics is different, I get that US mainstream music is filled with only lyrics about sx, butts, drugs, love, break up, nonsense lyrics or whatever.
But here for example, our rap scene is all about "meaningful" lyrics.
    Foreigners say wow amazing.
But in reality it is nothing just but words without any action. Everyone criticizes politicians. But none of those rappers do something.
Words gotta match to their actions.
And there are songs with deep, meaningful lyrics. But none of them resonates to me. None of them moves my heart like BTS do.
So it is very difficult to define BTS' music as just "oh they don't talk about love, break up, butts... But they talk about mental health depression." Or "oh it is the positive message"
(Actually RM did wrote lyrics about sex tho)
And that, eventho their music does bring positivity.
