    I know what your going through. Im not in Alaska but when we built out log home as soon as it was dried in we moved in. During our self build of the home we lived in the very old run down farm house. We did projects as we saved enough money for each project. It took us many years to get it mostly finished. Doing it this way kept us without a mortgage! Good luck to you!!!

    I am an old trained carpenter and when building something screws are the only to go because they won't back out over time and if have change something you take screw out and put it back easier

    • @ouralaskahomestead
      @ouralaskahomestead  9 месяцев назад

      Screws are more likely to snap though. I used a mixture of both on this build. Typically, I do prefer screws.

    If you tape over the bottom-outside of the window you will block the weep holes from being able to drain outside the wall. Then the only place any condensation in the frame has to go is into your framing and insulation.
    You're making great progress. Keep it up :)

    • @ouralaskahomestead
      @ouralaskahomestead  Год назад +2

      The flashing tape just covers the bottom tap where the screws go. We made sure and leave the Weep holes open. Thank you 😊

    Rough In window measurment is your only concern. Windows are made about 1 inch smaller in each direction for a reason. Milguard for example we would cut a spacer 1/2 plywood and put 2 pieces on the bottom sill for placing the window. Put window in hole on top of the spacers shift whole window to one side mark the window with a line down to the Tarpaper then shift all the way to the other side mark it again. Now make a mark in the middle of those 2 lines and move the window to that line and it's centered. Why do people check for level? It should be. Nail one Bottom corner then check for square. For windows that open. Solid ones no need. We never nailed the top to allow for settling.

    The larger living room window is a good upgrade. Americans are big on small windows, but in hindsight I think you'll find that it's better when you get the great views. It's not like you're trying to block your neighbor's view into your house.

    I don't believe you should have put that strip on the bottom. The bottom is put on the inside, then the sides, then the top. By putting it on the bottom on the outside water will not be able to drain if any should get under/on the inside the window.

      The burner on this grill unfortunately doesn’t work well enough to safely use it for canning. Hopefully it won’t be much longer and we can get a propane range. I try to get fresh meat as often as possible and there’s a wonderful greenhouse in town for produce. Once we get a fridge sorted out we should be able to get plenty of salmon and hopefully some halibut and rockfish.
