Just got one of these and like it a lot-- never a big SRM man but I enjoy the broad flat-grind with an edge that drops below the handle (an uncommon thing), incredibly light carry, and ingenious pocketclip. The axis-type action is easy & light, and though there was a touch of play out-of-box, it firmed right up with a couple small twists with a hex key. The price is a mite high at forty to fifty bucks but this is a near-perfect mid-range daily carry.
Thanks for sharing your experience David.
Since Sanrenmu started using their SRM branding they have also increased their pricing by a wide margin and while I am fond of the brand (I have reviewed almost 100 of their knives), I am not fond of the price point on many of their newest knives.
I'm a lefty... the second you switched the pocket clip, I said, no way! 😲 And was sold. 😎 I always check your videos before I buy a knife. I love how you are so in depth and thorough and seeing the knife taken apart! I'm such a knife nerd.🤓 Buying mine now on whitemountainknives, the only place that has them in stock. Thanks for the discount code! Love your videos, keep up the great work. I love SRM and Ganzo knives the best.
Ahh great. Yeah, I grew up as a Leftie myself. I was the youngest and had 3 older brothers so I got their hand me downs for things like hockey sticks and baseball gloves. It was a good thing for me because I became quite ambidextrous as a result (for most things - I still cannot write at all with my R hand).
I agree with Jake. Looks very 70 's to my eye, but its a neat blade shape. Im very impressed with that pocket clip design. It speaks to SRM's wealth of experience as an OEM. They know what they're doing.
Indeed, they have a very good in-house design team.
That really is an excellent clip design! Makes me wish more knives had a system that easy and functional
Yeah, I think other brands will take a look at it and make their own versions of it.
It does get a little bit loose over time, but not a big problem. I generally prefer my clips to be solid, but in this case it's kinda like a pen clip.
Pretty ingenious on the clip design. As a lefty, I really appreciate the effort.
Exactly. I grew up as a Leftie, so I know the challenge.
I loved this knife. I had one, lost it to a thief, just ordered another one after watching this video. I actually tested the blade on mine and was surprised to find it was actually D2 tool steel, and a hardness of RC60 at the edge. I figured it would have ended up being some kind of Chinese stainless like you often find in Eafengrow's "D2" blades. But my Eafengrow EF335 also tested as D2, despite my friends Eafengrow testing as some variant of 8Cr14Mov, can't remember which. Which isn't a terrible steel, but it doesn't even come close to the edge retention of actual D2. My knife Eafengrow is A LOT harder to sharpen than his, and holds an edge much longer, but they're the exact same knife otherwise. His even says "D2" on it, but he bought it in 2021 when I bought mine in 2019. I think Eafengrow is cheaping out on their blade steels, or whoever they get their knives from is, to keep profits in line with the pre-COVID era.
Sanrenmu has always been honest with the steel they claim to use on their knives. I have reviewed about 100 of their models on CCE. I am a VERY big fan of the brand.
Eafengrow often lies about the steel they use, which is why I stopped reviewing their knives.
Hi Jake and Bandit . Thanks for turning me on to Sanrenmu Years back , since then I have gifted ten SRM 910 , 9103-4 as well as three Y Start Jin02's and a seven other SRM knives including two Sanrenmu 7063auc's wich have the simular lock type . I have only two Ystart Jin01's and one Jin02 that I have held on too , which I still use and love , especially the Jin01 . I really love this new one you have reviewed and look forward to getting one . THANKS again for the recommendations I really appreciate it . Thanks
I am happy to have exposed you to these cool brands. I have reviewed more Sanrenmu knives than any other brand.
I like it.. I really like the color. I'm in Burlington Vermont. We're not as cold as long as you. It's still painful to walk outside without good gear & multiple layers.
Yeah, a guy needs to get out and stay in touch with nature, but in winter it can be a bit annoying when the wind is blowing hard and its -25 (actual, not windchill) or worse out.
Nice review didn’t even know this knife existed till you showed me. Good luck staying warm in the polar vortex hitting the west of Canada, it’s cold where I am on the west coast too but that’s in my west coast standards of cold. Out here you know minus 5 is a municipal emergency, minus 40 with the wind is nuts can’t even process that. Stay warm, happy and safe wish you guys all the best.
Thanks. We did stay warm, and just an hour or so ago our temps went above -10C and it is totally calm outside, a beautiful temperature to take Bandit for a bit of a walk outside.
I got my start in knife collecting with Sanrenmu and thanks to Jake and Paddy. I just ordered the blue version on white mountain knives with the CCE code. I saw this knife online 2-3 months ago but wouldn't pay 50 for it. 38 is more reasonable.
I agree. I was only willing to pay a bit more for it because I am a HUGE fan of Sanrenmu and I want every blade of theirs to cross my review table.
This is one sweet knife! And the pocket clip is nothing short of brilliant. Thanks, Jake!
my pleasure
I haven't bought a Sanrenmu in a while, but this model is intriguing. The ambi-clip is nicely designed. Thanks Jake!
I am so happy that they have a good number of new designs. you can see their latest stuff at srmknives.com/
You nailed it, 70ies vibes!! I really like it, it’s a real original in looks and in pocketclip style. Nice find!
Thanks for the video
Glad you like it!
Great review, Jake. Man, I don't really want to buy another knife but these SRM blades seem to push all the right buttons for me. That pocket clip is a pretty neat detail as well. Looks like the prices are starting to up on this company's products.
I am sorry for tempting you. :)
Thanks just got it today was wondering how to change the clip around
It is rather cool, eh. I like how easy it is (once you know how).
Super impressed with my SRM LAND 911. This 7228 looks like a winner, too. Just wish it had 12C27 or 14C28 blade steel.
Yeah, I am getting so tired of D2 on 80% of the budget knives out there.
Jake, the perfect sub 3 inch knife, for me, doesn't exis...😉 From what manner of witchcraft was the pocketclip borne from? Nice little knife. Thanks for sharing.
You need to design the perfect knife that is legal to carry where you live.
This guy might not be perfect but it is fun.
Very reminiscent of the 7063. Too bad they didn’t go with a Sandvik and get it in the $25 range. The clip is kind of a neat idea, wonder how it will hold up over time and use? Nice review, thanks.
I agree, the price is a bit higher than I would prefer, and I am so getting tired of everyone making so many knives with D2. It's not an expensive steel, and so many of us would prefer a full stainless steel.
Very nice review as always. I just ordered one from White Mt. Knives and used your coupon code.
Hope you enjoy it! they were sold out the day after you posted this comment.
@@CanadianCuttingEdge That's the power of a great reviewer.
perfext size legal almost everywhere. and nice looking ergos and aesthetics. convenient with the pocket clip, but not so sure i wouldn't release it. i ca be a bit rough going in and out of my pocket, not sure the convenience is worth it
I tested that pocket clip for exactly that concern. I simply could not get that clip it to accidentally come out of the knife, and I tried VERy hard. The only reason it looked so easy to come out is because I played with it so much that I got good at it, it is very secure.
Great design, especially that clip.
I think that clip is a true winner.
Best pocket clip I have ever seen... Badass....
I am very happy with it.
7228 GV is releasing soon (I got my hands on one!!!), Its the 7228s Big brother. Its a Terminus XR Killer.
Yeah, I saw that they were doing a big version. It should be quite good.
That’s much smaller than I thought it would be. How you going with the slipjoint review? I’ve never held an axis lock. Do you have to operate the lock from both sides?
I don't know what knife you are referring too concerning "the slipjoint review".
On most axis lock knives they can be actuated from just one side. Some have very strong springs that force you to pull on both sides, but this SRM is very nice and can be actuated quite easily from just one side.
That blade profile and material in a fixed blade would be sweet!
Yeah, it would make a nice little neck knife or boot knife, or even fixed pocket knife. I like to carry small fixed blades on my belt but tucked into my pocket.
Victorinox uses a similar clip on the Hunter Pro. But it's only a one-position design. SRM's design is definitely more user-friendly.
Ahh, thanks for sharing that about the Victorinox - I don't look at them much because most of what they made it outside the price range that I focus on here at CCE.
I have the same folding knife reviewed on my channel and i think it is my favorite on that size right now.
It is a great city edc knife.
Regards!.
Yeah, it is a fine design. I will probably hang onto this one in my permanent collection, and tat is saying a lot since that collection is less than 50 knives.
I gotta say that is a great clip. Really it’s a good quality knife for not a lot of money. I might have to pick one up
They dold out at WMK pretty quickly, I guess a lot of people feel the same way.
Hi Jake! Have u tried its larger version 7228L in vg10 steel that goes for around 60$ ? If yes, how are those? Good for the price? Bdw I'm looking at the one in red the 7228L-GV.
No, I have not tried the 7228L, but I would guess that they are going to have a build quality very much in line with the smaller version.
I’ve never seen this pocket clip style before... as a leftie, I’m very intrigued 👍
Yeah, I am very happy with it. I grew up as a leftie too.
Hey Jake, I just got a Land GP-909 on eBay, and the pivot screw is a weird 5-pin thing. Have you run into that on older SRMs? And is there a tool for that? Thanks!
Yes, that is one of the older designs back when they put very off pivot screws on their knives. I have seen it before.
I adjusted a screwdriver to span two of the divots in order to be able to take it apart. Here is a link to the type I mean, I had to use a file to create something that looks like this: ali.ski/zmJfN - Don't buy that set , it's just for showing you the shape.
I got an old LARGE flat screwdriver and made my own to fit the knives - back then I have 7 or 7 knives with the same pivot screw so it was worth the effort to make it. I still had to boil the knives for a few minutes to make the threadlocker get a bit softer, or else I would not have gotten the knives apart or adjusted.
I hope this helps you out.
@@CanadianCuttingEdge yes, that’s very helpful. Thanks!
I’ve been haunting eBay, cruising the cheap knives. That’s where this one came from. Some lovely people start their new knives (TwoSun, Enlan, etc.) for a buck, and sometimes I get one for cheap. I think I have enough (11 at last count) and then I see another cool one...
Nice little knife but SRM overpriced it by $20. The QSP Penguin is $26.
The QSP Penguin is simply and superbly awesome, but it is quite the exception in he knife world. If I had a very tight budget I would probably buy the Penguin. But, the Penguin is a much simpler designed knife, it takes much less work to produce it in almost every aspect. I don't believe it is an apples to apples comparison.
I love mine but the barbs on the clip are already warn out as my gf is a lefty and takes it when I don't get up early enough and keeps popping out on me. Think I'm going to put a conventional clip on it
You could buy your girlfriend her own knife.
I am not sure how to put a conventional clip on there. you could drill and put threads into the G10 but I find that that method is not all that reliable as the G10 will strip out quite easily.
@@CanadianCuttingEdge I'm probably going to CNC a spot on the inside to insert a small steel plate that's tapped for the screws
AliExpress stopped delivering knives to Turkey just as this and that new SRM slipjoint were released. 😭
That sucks. You should note that AliExpress is more like a group of stores, perhaps there are some other sellers that are willing to ship to Turkey. That is if it is the same as it is with Canada. At least 90% of sellers on AliExpress won't ship knives to Canada anymore, but there are a few that still do. I know how frustrating it can be to not be able to get the knives you want, not that that will make you feel better. :(
@@CanadianCuttingEdge yeah, there are a few places that sell dodgy Damascus fixed blades I'm nylon sheathes that'll still send here. But for anything of any quality, like SRM, I'm out of luck. 😭
Jake, do cheap axis locks on budget knives last or are they prone to failure? I am new to folders and wondering whether to go for the SRM 1168 with a liner lock or the 7228L with the axis/ambi lock. What do you suggest? Thanks in advance.
SRM is well known for quality. They might just have the best budget to quality ratio of ANY knife company. The do have some anodization issues on some knives but non of their axis locks has ever given me a bit of problem, they all work well. Solid lockup, well as solid as any axis lock can be. I cannot say the same thing about Benchmade axis locks - they created this style lock but they had a long time when their axis lock springs frequently failed.
@@CanadianCuttingEdge Thanks for the quick response. The 1168 (D2 steel) is available for about US$ 33 and the 7228L (VG10 steel) is available for about US$ 50 where I live.
Should I choose the former and save myself a few bucks or invest on the latter? My budget is right around the US$ 50 mark.
They are sold out at White mountain knives you can still get them at AliExpress for 44 bucks but you cannot get the yellow one so there's that..!!!!🤔🤔🤔and I only want the yellow one Soo ..and to me it looks the best... So who knows when that'll ever come back to market 🤷
I guess a lot of people watched my review and bought them out. When I posted the video they had stock in every colour. this review has gotten quite a few more views than average.
I am quite sure that WMK will stock it again. make sure you click on the NOTIFY ME link on the WMK page for the yellow one and you will get an email when they are back. I have no idea how long that will take.
This is more my style, don't know about the color for and edc. $ 50 looks like a steal
I think it is worth every penny too.
@@CanadianCuttingEdge have you ever seen any good knives on Wish, $40 Benchmade bugout clones look really good not sure if they are tho
An obvious guess: Series 7 = 70mm, Series 8 = 80mm, etc. ha ha
yes, exactly. I have a small handful of their Series 4 knives. I find it odd that there are not very many series 8 knives, I like that size.
HIP CLIP! 70's? Yes. Austin Powers 70's. It's Shag-a-delic!
I grew up in the 70's so it was not hard to recognize.
too expensive, $25-30 (US) max
A number of you are giving that feedback.
Is that because you believe small knives should inherently be less expensive? (serious question)
The size of a knife has very little to do with the cost of production. If they made this knife exactly the same design but with a 3.75" blade it wouldn't cost much more to produce but I think people would be very happy to pay a fair bit more for it.
Thats a 25 dollar knife..over priced. Like the clip
I agree that the price is higher than I would expect. Size has only a very tiny bearing on the cost to produce a knife. This is a better performing axis lock than almost every Benchmade I have ever had in my hands.
I think what Sanrenmu is doing is they are testing the Western market with their new SRM branding. They are making a whole series of SRM knives and they all are priced a fair bit more than we are used to seeing from Sanrenmu. The 7315 I have with exactly the same clip is made under the Sanrenmu branding and it costs a lot less.
Looks cool; side note if you get the senrenmu 7130 wrap it in orange or blue paracord since it's on the less wide side.
You could put that comment on the video of the 7130: ruclips.net/video/XswJKGL8aBY/видео.html
