  • In this video I look back at my visit to the world famous waterfalls of Victoria Falls straddled between Zimbabwe and Zambia in Southern Africa. This natural wonder of the world is a notoriously difficult place to photograph with poor lighting, lots of spray and limited vantage spots. However with my photography tips and insights I hope to help you overcome some of the challenges and get the most from your visit. I hope these tips are useful, if you’re not visiting, I hope it’s interesting enough to keep you watching :-)

Your photos turned out beautiful, I loved watching this, I was born in Zimbabwe, left when I was 6 years old, never saw the falls, but always love seeing photos and video of the area.

I had never really thought about the difficulty of photographing Victoria falls. Really interesting. Not sure this location will ever be on my list but hey you never know. Thanks for sharing.

A great set of tips James, it really sounds like a challenging place but the images certainly look worthwhile

Ralph Goldsmith cheers Ralph. I would rank it as one of the mosf difficult landscape photography locations I've ever shot

Hi James, felt the same in that it‘s hard to do justice to this place due to the geographical restrictions you described (access, limited vantage points, sun position, harsh contrast) . In sum they make it very difficult to come up with anything different beyond the usual record shot (and don‘t get me wrong here) let alone unique interpretation. That humbling experience and the poverty of the zimbabwean people left a somewhat bitter after taste. In any case thx for sharing - very unselfish!

very JR thanks very much! I totally agree, an extremely difficult location to shoot especially if just visiting for one day. Poverty is very chronic too as you point out which sits jarringly with some of the lavishness of tourist facilities

Thank you for these tips! I just came back from a trip to the falls and these were really helpful. I'm wondering, do you have any tips for editing photos of the falls in Lightroom? I do agree with you that even though I followed all the right practices, my photos don't seem to do the falls justice. But maybe that's the way it's supposed to be. Some things just need to be seen to be believed.

Thanks Nick. I don't really have any specific editing tips for the falls i'm afraid. I feel they are just one of those places which are really tough to shoot and no image will ever really live up to the real life experience :-)
