imo engineers are producers too. they do the bulk of sound construction that makes a song what it is. next are the beat makers for sure. but i’d say at least 90% of the time(rap wise), the artist’s actual work is very minimal. especially because the average artist isn’t getting all into the production and sound of the song. they mainly focus on lyrics n how they’re structured. that’s why we got the kanye n tpain of the industry, and then we got the soundcloud yutes

The costs mentioned are the costs of being an artist. Trying to justify giving the producer a smaller percentage based on this overhead makes no sense. Producers naturally get upset because his argument is nonsense and he says it so confidently he might take advantage of someone who doesn't know better. A producer contribution to a record can't be understated. Many are carrying artists sonically, not only contributing to the beat but the hooks, verses, arrangement etc. If anything some producers deserve a larger split but 50 - 50 is fair.

Just goes to show artist are extremely ungrateful of how easy they can get hot beats and how much work and time actually goes into getting to the level where your beats sound professional and are actually viable to be used professionally. It takes years, thousands of dollars, and so much talent and perseverance. The beat is almost the entire song, a vocalist is adding basically a single element. If you don't wanna pay 50% in royalties, you ain't gonna have no cheap beats anymore, with how much it costs to really get good, to have professional sounds, good mixing etc, artists are extremely lucky they are so spoiled with choice. Artist want everything for free, they wanna get a beat for like 50 bucks and then don't expect to have to pay royalties. And now learning how to make your own beats is easier than ever, I made a beat for my friend on splice, she’s new in the game and her song with my beat has 80k streams on Spotify. Not bad for a newcomer and I didn’t charge her no damn 50% royalties for a beat that took me a day and a half to make. It’s not that 90s anymore, you need to adjust to the times the internet is here to stay and finding a good beat isn’t that hard or expensive. The real magic happens in the mixing and mastering and the engineers I’ve found to do that I got on upwork for a fair price.

A lot of rappers dont realize how much time and energy it takes to actually make good beats, when I was a teen I wanted to rap and thought $999 for exclusive rights was too much. But once I started making beats I realized how hard making beats actually is. Rapping is easy in comparison, anyone can write and record their own vocals. Making beats, producing full songs, thats an entire universe full of different knowledge galaxies, with so many planets of skills that you have to learn and practice and stay consistent with. Rappers rap, producers do all the actual legwork to make those raps into actual songs, producers make the song translate across platforms. Being able to spit a 16 in double-time and triplets is impressive, but do you know how to make your piano, vocals, and 808s sound prominent in the mix without frequencies clashing? Do you know how to sidechain the kick and the bass? Do you know how RUclips, Spotify, and Soundcloud change the way your song sounds? Rapper names bring the attention, but rap vocals are the smallest aspect of song creation. Producers deserve more than 10% for the years of work they’ve put in. You aren’t paying for what they do in the studio, you’re paying them for the years it took for them to BE ABLE to make your music sound the way it sounds. In music, we all need each other, so lets work together and make sure we all get what we need
i can do both and will honestly say they’re both as hard as each other for different reasons. rapping is easy - until you want to spit something lyrically good that at the same time has meaning and came from the heart. producing is easy - until you want to produce something with soul that is sonically pleasing and doesn’t conflict with itself. something i don’t think producers understand however is that a lot of (non rich and non famous) rappers have to be their own engineers. now THAT is the part that is genuinely hard. vocals are a bitch to work with unless they’re recorded in the perfect environment and you know exactly what you’re doing when it comes to working with them. a lot of (not all) producers make the beat and think rappers spit the vox and it automatically sounds good. it doesn’t 😂 it takes hours and hours and hours of work. i spend more time on mixing vocals than i do on making beats and rapping put together. as a producer: it took us alot of time to get to the level we are at. it took us money to buy all these expensive plugins. we have to invest before we know it might work. we might have to do it only few times but we take alot of shit in the beginning the moment we can get placements and we ask for 50% that's already after we did all the hard work. what you spend on marketing is just a choice.

So what the ranter is talking about: the expenses, the studio, the promotion etc. - these are taken from the artists budget, which is recouped by the MASTER royalty. For the master royalty, artists will typically get 12-20% and the producer gets around 3%. The system is already set up to proportionally pay out master royalties based on what he’s talking about. The 50/50 number he’s talking about is the PUBLISHING royalty. This is only for musical writers, 50 for artist, 50 for producer.
Man producers dont get paid like artists do for performing, so 50% publishing and writers creds is perfectly fair, artists pay for promo so yall can get more buzz so that they can tour.

I mean normal splits are 50% to the Composer 50% to the Publisher. If you are self published and you split the payment 50/50 you would be at 75% for the rapper and 25% for the producer (assuming no one else composed the song). If your signed to someone else your going to have to get 25% if your lucky. Honestly if you can't come to an agreement in 2024 on splits with your producer, you should make your own beats. The tools are easier than ever and you can avoid this whole problem.

There's a million artist looking for amazing beats, there's not that many amazing producers, and guess what we can always find a good artist to put on our songs. The fact is, you artists need us far more than producers need you. I can ALWAYS find a rapper to rap on my beats, it's not hard because everyone is a rapper nowadays and lots of them are really good. If beatmaking is so damn easy how bout you make your own beats and well see just how easy it is? Most of us producers have spent thousands of dollars at least and years of our lives grinding super hard to get to the point where our beats sound professional. That's why we get so hot when one of you artist comes along and acts like we only deserve ten percent of the royalties for something we did the majority of the work for. The marketing and all thar is irrelevant to the fact that we made the entire foundation of the song you're gonna be putting your vocals on, you have nothing without the beat. The costs mentioned are the costs of being an artist. Trying to justify giving the producer a smaller percentage based on this overhead makes no sense. Producers naturally get upset because his argument is nonsense and he says it so confidently he might take advantage of someone who doesn't know better. A producer contribution to a record can't be understated. Many are carrying artists sonically, not only contributing to the beat but the hooks, verses, arrangement etc. If anything some producers deserve a larger split but 50 - 50 is fair.

Just goes to show artist are extremely ungrateful of how easy they can get hot beats and how much work and time actually goes into getting to the level where your beats sound professional and are actually viable to be used professionally. It takes years, thousands of dollars, and so much talent and perseverance. The beat is almost the entire song, a vocalist is adding basically a single element.

And now learning how to make your own beats is easier than ever, I made a beat for my friend on splice, she’s new in the game and her song with my beat has 80k streams on Spotify. Not bad for a newcomer and I didn’t charge her no damn 50% royalties for a beat that took me a day and a half to make. It’s not that 90s anymore, you need to adjust to the times the internet is here to stay and finding a good beat isn’t that hard or expensive. The real magic happens in the mixing and mastering and the engineers I’ve found to do that I got on upwork for a fair price.

A lot of rappers dont realize how much time and energy it takes to actually make good beats, when I was a teen I wanted to rap and thought $999 for exclusive rights was too much. But once I started making beats I realized how hard making beats actually is. Rapping is easy in comparison, anyone can write and record their own vocals. Making beats, producing full songs, thats an entire universe full of different knowledge galaxies, with so many planets of skills that you have to learn and practice and stay consistent with. Rappers rap, producers do all the actual legwork to make those raps into actual songs, producers make the song translate across platforms. Being able to spit a 16 in double-time and triplets is impressive, but do you know how to make your piano, vocals, and 808s sound prominent in the mix without frequencies clashing? Do you know how to sidechain the kick and the bass? Do you know how RUclips, Spotify, and Soundcloud change the way your song sounds?
Rapper names bring the attention, but rap vocals are the smallest aspect of song creation. Producers deserve more than 10% for the years of work they’ve put in. You aren’t paying for what they do in the studio, you’re paying them for the years it took for them to BE ABLE to make your music sound the way it sounds. In music, we all need each other, so lets work together and make sure we all get what we need
i can do both and will honestly say they’re both as hard as each other for different reasons. rapping is easy - until you want to spit something lyrically good that at the same time has meaning and came from the heart. producing is easy - until you want to produce something with soul that is sonically pleasing and doesn’t conflict with itself. something i don’t think producers understand however is that a lot of (non rich and non famous) rappers have to be their own engineers. now THAT is the part that is genuinely hard. vocals are a bitch to work with unless they’re recorded in the perfect environment and you know exactly what you’re doing when it comes to working with them. a lot of (not all) producers make the beat and think rappers spit the vox and it automatically sounds good. it doesn’t 😂 it takes hours and hours and hours of work. i spend more time on mixing vocals than i do on making beats and rapping put together. Producers are the base of every song. The first thing u hear in most songs is some type of melody or beat.Take a pizza for example. You can’t make a pizza without the dough. For the master royalty, artists will typically get 12-20% and the producer gets around 3%. The system is already set up to proportionally pay out master royalties based on what he’s talking about.
The 50/50 number he’s talking about is the PUBLISHING royalty. This is only for musical writers, 50 for artist, 50 for producer.

I mean normal splits are 50% to the Composer 50% to the Publisher. If you are self published and you split the payment 50/50 you would be at 75% for the rapper and 25% for the producer (assuming no one else composed the song).
If your signed to someone else your going to have to get 25% if your lucky. Honestly if you can't come to an agreement in 2024 on splits with your producer, you should make your own beats.
The tools are easier than ever and you can avoid this whole problem.

A song made a hit because of social media is different because people are constantly intrigued by the song because of a catchy clip.

Either way it goes, when they decide to work together the relationship becomes interdependent. A voice is an instrument as well. It just adds to the track but the track goes nowhere without marketing. If no one markets that hot song, it sits there. I've heard some fire beats with the wrong artist, and it goes nowhere.

There's a million artist looking for amazing beats, there's not that many amazing producers, and guess what we can always find a good artist to put on our songs. The fact is, you artists need us far more than producers need you. I can ALWAYS find a rapper to rap on my beats, it's not hard because everyone is a rapper nowadays and lots of them are really good. If beatmaking is so damn easy how bout you make your own beats and well see just how easy it is? Most of us producers have spent thousands of dollars at least and years of our lives grinding super hard to get to the point where our beats sound professional. That's why we get so hot when one of you artist comes along and acts like we only deserve ten percent of the royalties for something we did the majority of the work for. The marketing and all thar is irrelevant to the fact that we made the entire foundation of the song you're gonna be putting your vocals on, you have nothing without the beat. You're in a privileged position to have an abundance of beats you can choose from that are really cheap to license and all we ask for is our portion of the backend. If you don't like that we can always go back to how it used to be, where you had to pay thousands of dollars up front and then still had to pay royalties. You guys have it so good and still are bitching like we are taking advantage. Back in the day, artist needed a label to really even get connected to good beatmakers, there wasn't a catalog of them that you could pay 50 bucks for a beat. Depends what he’s talking about - if we’re talking Master Royalties and you either paid upfront for the beat or can show you have leverage and can pull in streams / sales to where its worth me just getting 10-20%, because 10% of nothing is nothing and I still did my part of the work. It’s up to the artist to then market the track and make sure if brings in to cover their budget.
When it comes to Publishing / Songwriting royalties that needs to get split equally amongst the writers (artist(s), producer(s) & songwriter(s)) this could be 50% artist and 50% producer.

Making a beat is not making a song. A beat does not constitute 50% of a songs construction. Making a beat today takes pressing buttons and having access to certain tools. This is why producers keeps their process secret bevause frfr anybody can create a beat if they know the tools to use. The actual magic happens when the producer can help to create a song. Unless they are writing and building the construction of the song they don’t deserve 50% of the final product but whatever, these artist need to start creating their own beats and see how producers eat then. 🤷🏾♀️

Yes you market it, yes you need studio time, however you aren’t doing it acapella😂 you need a good underlay that ppl will embrace to gain those numbers, so getting people to like it period is half the work on the producing end because they are the reason the song will be embraced. It's all about the deal you create. You can create any deal you want. It all comes down to what you negotiate. For example I saw a producer offer a deal where after the song reaches certain metrics, the deal can be renegotiated.

Know most of these projects that they work on it all comes together with each part not being major or minor but when it’s blended together becomes a hit, you can get a fantastic beat that people and throw some dope lyrics on top of it several times and still get a good amount of record sales somewhere in this project residuals should be right for the beats that you do that you created it
