Jennifer Ewbank, Deputy Director of CIA for Digital Innovation, responsible for accelerating the development and integration of digital and cyber capabilities across all of CIA’s mission areas. Interviewer: Paul Hollingsworth PhD, former senior CIA Executive in Analysis and Operations. Ms Ewbank retired from her CIA post shortly after this interview.

    BIOS: JENNIFER EWBANK is the Deputy Director of CIA for Digital Innovation, responsible for accelerating the development and integration of digital and cyber capabilities across all of CIA’s mission areas, to include enterprise information technology, cyber security, cyber operations and analysis, data strategy and artificial intelligence, open source collection and reporting, as well as building the digital acumen of the CIA workforce through training and education. As the Agency’s de facto Chief Digital Officer, Ms. Ewbank oversees the Digital C-Suite roles of Chief Information Officer, Chief Information Security Officer, and Chief Data Officer. Shortly after the interview, Jennifer retired as CIA’s Deputy Director for Digital Innovation.
    PAUL HOLLINGSWORTH PhD is the senior intelligence advisor on Europe and Eurasia for the energy company BP. He is a retired senior executive from the CIA after a 27-year career in analysis and operations, including overseas tours and rotational assignments at the FBI and the NSC. Prior to joining the US government, he worked as a managing editor for the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute. Hollingsworth has served on the Board of Trustees of Hollins University since 2020. He holds a B.A. in theology from Georgetown University and an M.A. and a Ph.D. in medieval Slavic and Byzantine history from the University of California (Berkeley).
    JAMES R. HUGHES currently serves as the 17th President of AFIO. His service began January 2015. He had a career of US Government service spanning 37 years in numerous foreign countries with a particular focus in the Middle East. He started in U.S. Military Intelligence in the late 1960s and then joined the CIA’s Clandestine Service. He served overseas as a Chief of Station several times, and at CIA Headquarters in a number of senior management positions, including as Chief of the Near East and South Asia Division, in the Directorate of Operations [today’s National Clandestine Service]. He was also named the Associate Deputy Director of Operations (ADDO) at the National Security Agency, 1998-99. Following his retirement from the government in 2005, he joined EDS in Herndon, VA, as the Client Industry Executive for the U.S. Intelligence Community. After the HP acquisition of EDS, he continued to serve in a similar capacity until his retirement in 2012. His parents were missionaries in Turkey in the 1950s, where Jim spent his formative years. He is fluent in Arabic.
