Deborah Ann Woll (True Blood, Daredevil) joins us this week to share her process as an actor in taking pride and enjoyment in your performance, but not lingering on it after the fact and letting the opinions of others make you defensive in your next role.
This idea of other’s opinions gets expanded as Deborah shares her experience being bullied as a teenager and how the isolation and trauma still lingers with her to this day.
We also talk unfinished Marvel projects with Daredevil and the Punisher, guarding your confidence, and the legacy of True Blood.

DEBORAH ANN WOLL on Unfinished Marvel Projects, True Blood, Trauma of Bullying & Owning Confidence #insideofyou #deborahannwoll #trueblood #michaelrosenbaum
Karen Page. Her chemistry with Charlie Cox, Jon Bernthal and Elden Henson was powerful. I hope we get them on the podcast
Jon bernthal has his own podcast it's really good
Karen Page??? She was HATED by fans for being so entitled and judgmental. She was pure insufferable cringe in every scene she was in. Obviously not Deborah's fault, she was told to play this horrendous character, who was supposed to be disliked as she was in the comics. I mean, in the comics, she ends-up living on the street, becomes a heroin addict who does underground porn, and sleeps with Matt knowing full well she has AIDS. He character was actual trash. I love Deborah, but that character, even though diluted, was horrible.
She and Mr. Cox made Elden appear to be more than a cardboard cutout of non-emotion, which is a hell of a feat.
@@ljavwa3459 yeah no they didn’t. Woll and Cox did great but so did Henson
Why the hell haven't they asked her to be on the new show ?? That's ridiculous. She's a main reason Daredevil & Punisher were great. Christ, that's terrible if they do not extend an olive branch here.
I was very pleasantly surprised seeing Deborah in a recently released video game. I also love everything she does in regards to D&D.
She is amazing GM!
Relics & Rarities was one of the funniest things I've ever watched. Hope she will be able to do more of that besides all the other collaborations, it was amazing.
@@jolabrese Such a fantastic storyteller! And her guests are excellent too.
Agreed! She's an excellent DM and player. On top of that she's a good person which is always nice to see.
Faye :D
They can’t reboot daredevil without asking Deborah Ann Woll to come back! Her chemistry with everyone she has a scene with was so incredible. Especially with Charlie Cox and Jon Bernthal. Get it together Disney/Marvel!
They can,Daredevil has had other GFs I think.
@@shaunduquette5992 He’s supposed to end up with Elektra anyway. She’s an important character on the show (imo) regardless if she’s his love interest or not. I like her better with Frank Castle anyway 😂
@@kchattx yeah she is much more than a love interest! I even like Matt to end up with Elektra but that doesn't mean Karen just disappears or shouldn't even be in the series
I've a feeling they're gonna go a different route.
Karen Page and Jennifer Walters enter the room
Matt Murdock: I didn't see that coming
I just love her voice. It's very soft, yet controlled with proper pronunciation. She seems like a nice, grounded person. I appreciate that she shares her life with us.
My condolences to you , Michael, and all the Justice league cast for the loss of Kevin conroy, we never say it enough but we thank and appreciate you all for all the moments and memories you’ve given us over the years, Kevin will be missed, we thank and appreciate everything he’s given us , forever the Batman in our hearts
Yeah what a blow losing Kevin Conroy it's just him and Keaton for my favorite Batman
@@russphilbrook9719 I’d add Roger Craig Smith, Bruce Greenwood, and Diedrich Bader to that list , I talked to Bader & RCS before and they’ve always been nice to me
@@russphilbrook9719 as for live action, my favorite will always be Adam west, he was my introduction to Batman when I was a kid
Kevin's is the voice I hear when I read a Batman comic.
@@richardb6260 same with me
Deborah An Woll has been an ABSOLUTE favourite of mine since True Blood.
I REALLY wish she was in more stuff. She's always excellent, and appears to be a genuinely wonderful person too.
Breaks my heart to hear she was bullied.
As (barely) a survivor I know exactly what she means. I carry my trauma with me to this day (at 38) and I will remain broken. I wish I could spare every other person those feelings.
I guess her not being in more stuff means she's not willing to kiss ass or sleep with someone to get ahead. Mad respect for her.
@@ronburgundy3172
Indeed.
It's incredibly sad that you could all too easily be correct (and I'm no fan of mindless "me too" accusations. I'm just pragmatic and cynical enough to know that where there's money there are people who will exploit others for personal gain)
It's *extremely* unlikely that Weinstein was the only or the last abuser in such a position.
We can only hope that however imperfect the activism has been it will have a positive outcome in the long run.
You don't have to remain broken because you aren't truly broken, you *can* heal. I'm older than you and have dealt w/serious childhood and adult trauma and thought I would always just be damaged goods (cus of course there are ways the stuff in your head affects your body as well)...until i tried microdosing. I had been raised believing all substances are bad (by those who chose to drink heavily and chainsmoke like chimneys) so i was petrified - and then i actually tried it and almost couldn't stop crying the whole first experience because of the utter relief i felt - from my ptsd, debilitating anxiety, depression, just the weight of all that bullshit i had been subjected to lifted off and I felt like myself, fully, for the first time in my adult life. You don't even have to do it that often for it to be effective, it felt great for months before i even sought out more but you can also do it weekly if that's what you require. I just know that you are amazing and resilient and deserve to feel worthy *because you are* and I want you to have that knowledge firsthand. I hope you're doing well regardless and remember to always be kind to yourself 💝
This was an incredible episode. She is so genuinely lovely and sweet. It pains me she got bullied growing up. She's got a beautiful honest energy about her, and ive loved her performances in everything shes done. Hopefully we get to see more of her in the Karen Page role.
She brings tears to my eyes. I still to this day get lost in angry thoughts of when I was bullied as a kid. It's precious people like Deborah that you wish you could at a moments notice give a warm comforting hug.
In all seriousness, her husband is a luck bastard. She is such a catch. Absolutely beautiful inaide and out. Kind, sweet, intelligent, nerd/geek, articulate, funny, talented, etc... She's awesome.
That episode of Karen’s backstory is embedded into my mind it was that good. Daredevil is at just another level altogether. ❤
I was just thinking about that, that was great too. Daredevil all around was so incredible
Oh gosh that episode was insane
@@clarkstrange2142 erik Olson was a phenomenal writer for the show. It's a shame they wouldn't have him for DD Born again..
@@everythingexplicit5788 yeah I hope they find someone comparable
I want to know why she hasn’t seen it. She talks about all the people who wrote it, went up there to film it, and worked on it, etc. There were also people who busted their @$$es on post-production. Don’t you think their work should be appreciated by the actor who played the title character of the episode? I’m a little disappointed to hear she didn’t respect their work enough to even look at the finished product.
This episode was such a treat, I loved Deborah in Trueblood and Daredevil, she is absolutely brilliant, it would be a huge shame if Marvel didn't include her in the new Daredevil. It was so great to hear her talk in such a warm, open and generous way, she seems like such a sweet person, it's hard to imagine why anyone would want to hurt her - but then I guess bullies are intimidated by people who are special and shine. I really hope we get to see her in more stuff soon. Thank you Deborah, thank you Rosey and Ryan, and thanks Bryce, it was lovely to see your face! ❤
Disney keeps spewing this Spiel about having strong smart women in their lineups ...if they don't include Ms Woll they prove once again they're after the shock value and political activists who attack their own fanbase
Deborah Ann Woll she is amazing. Her Karen Page in Daredevil netflix series is the goat. I hope she comes back for the Disney plus "Daredevil: Born Again" series.
Disney is gonna ruin that!
@@Darkkent83 cry.
@@Magdalena8008s it's your party you can if you want to
She plays Faye I'm the new God of War and her performance was standout. Chefs kiss.
On occasion we get to hear actors shine a new light on their background with unheard stories(Kevin conroy, Wil wheaton, Robert Patrick, David Harewood). Deborah Ann Woll's story has been one of those exceptional stories that has had that effect on me. Just changing the way, we look at their acting and gaining a perspective of where it is coming from enhancing our rewatching experience. You're doing something beautiful here Michael and thank you for it. From my middle school experience, I can say that I can relate to the feeling of being looked over by classmates, just due to your personality of wanting to do better.
I love she’s Faye in God of War
did she talk about it in this podcast?
@@navidsh1269no but it would have been so great if they talked about this ❤
I really hope they bring her back to the MCU. It's criminal she hasn't gotten better roles. The trip from Daredevil acted amazingly
If she doesn't get brought back into the MCU as Karen Page........any chance she gets cast as Jean Grey? Just a thought.
Having just watched the episode of Karen’s backstory two nights ago, I can tell you it’s absolutely astounding work. Granted, everything she did in that show was always so honest and top notch. Not bringing her back would be a severe disservice!!
There are a bunch of great actors out there but Deborah is just the business. Really enjoy her performances and literally find myself smiling when I see her doing new work. Great show as always. Keep loving and living as good humans!
She is one of the most wholesome people ever, i hope they bring her back in the new Daredevil
That bit about everyone having a middle school story/teacher crucial to their sense of self really resonated with me. Solid episode all around
I hadn’t heard how she was doing of late after the impact of DD’s cancellation. Her D&D show on Geek & Sundry was a bigger gift to her than we both realized! I’m glad she has multiple means to channel her passions, and wish her well with everything. I can relate on some key levels, so her struggles in years past moved me, and I am vicariously grateful for the great things happening for her, fueling her for the daily challenges.
I really enjoyed her as Karen Page but then Relics & Rarity made me a huge fan. I was not a D&D player and that was my first actual play I watched and it sucked me in from the very beginning. I'm sad that G&S didn't continue it, I thought it was a cool way to bring in celebrities.
Inside of You is easily the best celeb hangout/interview series or podcast ever.
She is a total Sweetheart and such a talent. I loved her on DD and Punisher. I really hope she gets brought back for the new series. The whole cast to be honest. Thanks for having her on.
Deborah being in potentially game of the year is such a big jump from when I first saw her in True Blood! She really forged ahead and did so well.
She is the best. Voicing Faye in God of War really moves me. Karen in Daredevil and beyond is legendary as well.
I just finished listening to this episode and it was powerful. She definitely opens up and has so many great stories. I could relate to her on the bullying. Words are powerful and some people don’t realize that. I admire her work ethic. Prayers definitely for her husband and I hope that they find a cure. Thank you for another powerful episode. Enjoying the new album.
Deborah opening up about bullies in school was so relatable and really hit me. Thank you so much for opening up and sharing, just made me love her more! I listen to the Truest Blood routinely, it's such a blast hearing the detailed behind-the-scenes stories. Another great episode Michael, thank you! I'm binge-watching True Blood again thanks to you having Deborah and Kristin Bauer on your podcast!
Love the podcast Mr. Rosenbaum! They way you bring up emotional and vulnerable topics in such a way that makes every guest lower their guard and give you great information that we can all identify with is amazing! You're an amazing actor, musicians and podcaster and I tune in every single episode! Keep up the great work, you're an inspiration to all of us! Deborah is great in every single thing I've ever seen her in!
First I heard of her was as Karen Page. She was fantastic. That’s where I knew her from when I saw clips of God of War and started playing it. She’s fantastic in that, too. I never saw True Blood, only because I either didn’t have HBO at the time or I just never got around to it. Doesn’t mean I didn’t want to. I just means I haven’t yet.
She is such a great actress and the way she approaches acting is so smart and shows in her work.
Daredevil was the first show I saw her in, and she moved me to tears on more than one occasion (and I don't cry easily), she is always a delight to watch.
Love Mrs. Woll. When the calls for Amber Heard to be let go. Deborah was my first thought to play Mera. Love her passion
I remember that episode for Daredevil and Lee Tergesen playing your onscreen dad was amazing in that episode.
This was great, loved how open and calming she was. The vulnerability there was as real as can be. Superb show.
Karen’s backstory episode was beautifully made and one of the highlights of the masterpiece of TV that was Season 3 of DD! So great to hear that she had such an amazing experience making it ❤
She's so talented and underrated!! She's always so passionate in every role and she's quite beautiful!!
She killed it in True Blood and is great in DareDevil. I hope she is back for the Disney plus show! She's great!!!!
Ahh she was so great as Karen Page. A character I never really thought much of early on in Daredevil, man did she ever make me care about her by season 2. Loved her interactions with Jonny B's Frank Castle, just awesome-awesome chemistry.
Great interview as always! Definitely recognized her from True Blood. She seems like an awesome person.
Deborah Ann Woll is such a gift to the world. I loved her Relics & Rarities show. She is creative, emotionally intelligent, warm, kind, and welcoming. She is the sort of DM that I feel like our inner child craves to have taken on an adventure to spectacular places of whimsy and wonder. Easily one of my favorite DMs and celebrities. Much love for her and those who create a safe space for people to authentically explore their creative expression through collaborative story telling.
Karen Page! She’s so incredible in DD. Always love the Tuesdays with Rosey. Every week. Thanks for doing this weekly, my friend. ❤
When Daredevil came out ...ooof . And I was like "Wait...I know this redhead from somewhere" and then it hit me . And I was so pleasantly surprised as to the contrast with True Blood . Was a good shows but phew with Daredevil and all the adjacent series...I was really impressed and hooked
Phenomenally candid interview with a kind and talented actress. Really enjoying learning more about her. As someone who was constantly teased as a child due to my learning disabilities, I can relate to this on so many levels. Thank you. 🙏🏻❤️❤️. I know this interview will help many.
Woolsey is a beast. Her performance as Jessica was heartbreaking. How is she not a bigger star?
Thank you for sharing Ann, I was bullied throughout high school too and it really affected me but thanks to the support of my loved ones, I've been healing from those early wounds, by the way, i love your performance in daredevil is incredible, Karen is such a fearce woman.
21:10 Michael please tell Deborah that I was fucking proud of her Karen Page episode of Daredevil. She fucking NAILED it to the godsdamn wall! Disney are frankly fools if they don’t bring her back for Daredevil Reborn. A phenomenal actor and a lovely lady. Great podcast man, love it.
Well they are tools, so expect Daredevil not to be as deep as Netflix was, I'm hoping she won't be on there cuz her gravitas is better than that
She is in God of War Ragnarok too as Faye!
I love the podcast Michael, Inside Of You.
This beautiful actress was so open and genuine throughout the interview then at the end you thanked her for letting you be inside of her but not in some pervy way… Lightened the mood before saying goodbye, I had a bit of a chuckle.
I needed that chuckle because her recounting the bullying she endured struck very close to home for me, I can rhyme off the names of my attackers without straining to recall.
That’s perhaps one of the reasons I enjoyed Smallville so much, Clark has this amazing destiny ahead of him but he’s gotta survive high school first.
Anyhow, love Deborah Ann Woll in everything she’s been in that I’ve seen. Great interview, thanks!
Loved Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page!! Can’t wait to hear what stories she shares and learn more about her. Thank you Michael for getting her on podcast ❤️ Hope you have an amazing week!! ❤️ Happy Tuesday 💙
Wonderwoll by Oasis. She's delightful and brightens up any room. Another good interview, Michael!
True blood definitely was a favorite show of mine. I also was a fan of Smallville so I really enjoy your podcasts. It's hard to believe you guys ever deal with insecurities but I guess the more pressure put on everyone dealing with the business can increase all that. Never thought I'd feel so much empathy towards you guys. Thanks for sharing all that!
She’s coming back! 🤟🏻🤟🏻
Really enjoyed this episode Love Deborah, I been bullied not only in school but at home from two of my siblings. So glad my granddaughter,s school don’t tolerate it and the children are tough to be responsible to each other. School have changed so much over the decades. Not only do you feel that kind of pressure in school and from your parents, I can imagine that pressure you get in doing acting specially at a very young age. I think everyone wants to be good what they do, they should give less crap what others think just do the best you can. My children ask me one time, why I was dressed in pJ and going out like I just woke up. I told my children dose it matter I am not going out to impress anyone. I am going out to be me and feel free and get me a cup of coffee, boy did I get a lot of lookers 😂 I was were Star Wars PJ with slippers I did get asked were I got them 😁 it took me years to come out of shell after being bullied abused and dealing with pressure at work and from my EX. To care what others think and I won’t be bullied or abused again.
I've been wanting her to do this podcast for a long time! Thanks Rosie Pants!
DAW's comments on being bullied strike close to home. I very much had those experiences as well. Thank you for having the courage to share. I'm saddened that I never found the theater geeks at my school! ❤
I never watched True Blood, but Deborah was GREAT in Dare Devil. Great guest Rosy!
You should check out true blood the show is really great it's based on the Sookie stackhouse series by Charlene Harris
In my Bill Compton voice: "Jessica I have errands to run errands that do not require your assistance."
Great actress and an infectiously wholesome guest. Loved this episode!
we need a immemorial segment for kevin conroy or please do another episode with stories about him it would be so nice to hear form you and the rest of the casr
I think Deborah is one of the most charming, lovely women in the world. The fact that she had people bully her into doubting it is both infuriating and saddening.
An absolute breath of fresh air. So sweet, honest and humble. Keep going girl 😊
I have not seen True Blood, but my wife and I were huge fans of Daredevil when it first came out. Since then, we have re-watched the series at least twice. In my opinion it is still some of the best work that Marvel has done. Deborah's work in that show is outstanding, to say the least. I do remember the episode she's talking about, and it was very very good. If you happen to see this comment, please tell her that many of us really love that episode, and she was spectacular in it.
I was also picked on very heavily as a kid, and it certainly does stick with you for a long time. It changes the course of your life. Listening to her talk about that stuff was difficult but also relieving, she was very brave to do this with you!
God she's so positive and full of light, like you can see it in her face lol. What a pleasant human being, seems relatively healthy and balanced. Good interview Rosey.
She’s always so engaged and present in interviews.
Her smile and awareness of self is so inspiring I'm glad I was able to enjoy this episode thank you michael
So happy that Charlie Cox is back in the MCU but if she and Elden Henson don’t come back as well it will be a crime.
Sweet girl, hard to believe she was bullied. I think most of us were at one time. I remember being very popular in one school for years and then having to transfer to another in which I was a social pariah. I have no idea how that happened but it was rough. Fortunately I grew faster that most of the guys and got into athletics in High School which made things much better. Being a kid is tough.
The episode about Karen on Daredevil was my absolute favorite. I just cried the whole time, so good man...
You are very good in God of War Deb and it was a pleasant surprise to see you in there. Miss you as Karen page though, your character personified the idea that not all strong women kick the shit out of everyone and act like men. You bring a realistic strength to femininity that's is a great example for writers and people learning about writing or storytelling at any age.
She doesn't get enough work. She's a powerhouse.
"To grieve deeply is to have loved fully"
Rosenbaum’s vintage Stevie Nicks shirt from Fleetwood Mac’s “Tango In The Night” era is everything. 🖤it.
Rosenbaum is totally funny. Case in point, the movie Sorority Boys is beyond hilarious because of Michael specifically.
Would love to see more of these Netflix Marvel guys on here, thanks rosey
This resonated a lot, the effort to get over childhood being a lifelong struggle. Thanks to both of you for being authentic.
Deborah Ann Woll kickstarted my interest in Dungeons & Dragons. She did a few episodes for Geek & Sundry (Relics & Rarities) and it opened a new world of gaming for me ^^ So... thanks :)
Secondly, @Michael Rosenbaum, condolences for the loss of your colleague on Justice League, Kevin Conroy has always been and will always be Batman.
That solo episode of Karen in DD was insane.
I'd never seen anything with Deborah prior to the Netflix Daredevil/Punisher series and she's amazing in that universe...
Such a great guest. Learned so much about her. Have always enjoyed her work on film/tv
The Walken imitation...Awesome. Simply awesome!!
You're a good dude, Rosy. It's amazing to see these real people, whom we only really have relationships with as the characters they play, appearing relaxed in a casual situation and always glowing, open and with a big smile across their faces. I'm hooked on the podcast to the extent I've had the jingle stuck in my head for weeks.
Two underrated actors right here
She's one of the most underrated actors in hollywood! Big fan
I love seeing Deborah on the BGG channel (Board Game Geek), playing board games on "Game Night." She really is the sweetest person.
She's funny, she explains the rules perfectly, and she has a perfect voice for storytelling.
If every actor and actress was more like Deborah, Hollywood would be a way more wholesome place
the whole fame thing...its a beast. i know many creatives who dont publish/pursue opportunities simply because they are just too afraid of the judgement/publicity. the world has become too demanding and too cruel. deborah is a beacon of hope in that respect. she is so beautiful, so u know they want her naked somewhere and having little further impact on the story/screen, but she has so far refused to become that. she delivers her characters with class, authenticity, intelligence, and a raw vulnerability that is rarely matched. since i first saw her in TB, she has reminded me of katharine hepburn and lauren bacall, whom i always admired. i just recently discovered the daredevil series thru echo, and i was thrilled to see her and i couldnt be happier that they are bringing it back!
Talking about validation from random people vs a fellow professional. . . I'm an illustrator and of course I love hearing from anyone at all that they like my work and they think I'm skilled. But when you hear it from a fellow artist, and you like their work and feel they really know what they're talking about and what it takes to do what you do, it is even more appreciated. I can't help but value those comments from those people more than random people. And a new Daredevil without Karen Paige will not be quite as good. What she did with Karen Paige was so unbelievably perfect, Marvel better call her!!! I love Deborah Ann Woll, she's such a lovely person.
Loved Deborah in Daredevil and Punisher as Karen Page. And I hope and would love to see her return as Karen Page in the upcoming Daredevil series.
32:00. Relics & Rarities is one of the most unique D&D/Role-Playing shows that one will find on RUclips. I highly recommend taking a look at the show. It is a great introduction to Role-Play mechanics and it has celebrities in each episode (Charlie Cox-Daredevil, Matthew Lillard-Scream, Kevin Smith-Clerks, etc...). Check the show out!
I love Deborah Ann Woll, especially as Karen Page! Thought she played the role perfectly and I greatly enjoyed her backstory episode. Her evolution as a character was fascinating to watch! She's so stunning, too! Huge fan of the podcast, too! Michael's a wonderful host and asks incisive and insightful questions! Thank you for this episode!
If you need a bright personality with a brighter smile, look no further. She's quite awesome in the best sense of the word. Great interview, hope she get's that call from the Mouse House
Michael being real with us, I’ve done shitty fucking things! He’s definitely one of us. 👏🏻
Only love her more after that interview. Definitely would love to see Karen on screen again as she’s right, wayyyy more story to tell!
It was great seeing Deborah Ann Woll again, and learning so much more about her. She was amazing as Karen Page, and learning the character's backstory in the third season was a gut punch, but explained so much about why Karen did what she did. I too was bullied growing up, but every experience can teach you something, if you're open to it. The most empathetic, kind, supportive people I know are often people who experienced bullying. It can really open you up to understanding and identifying with the problems of other people, and recognizing the power of even simple acts of kindness.
Oh, and Michael, if you need proof that people listen all the way to the end: Yes, I think we all like to "shit in a nice room." ;)
As a fan of True Blood who is re-watching the series, Jessica was one of the best characters on the show. And, she has a fantastic smile. Her relationship with Hoyt was the heart of the show (until they ruined it by having her sleep with Jason). The scene where she glamours Hoyt to make him forget her still brings tears to my eyes.
Karen Page is going to return. She has too. She is THE BEST. Honestly, all the Daredevil cast is the best. Disney can tone down the gore but the actors have to be the same.
She is so fantastic. One of my favorite actresses ever!
I really, really loved this interview. And yes she is very calming.
Fantastic heartfelt and moving interview. Deborah Ann Woll is such a force for good in this world. I guess she might not ever see everyone saying such nice things about her work, which is a shame. Wish those in the business would do a better job of that!!
Being so honest and opening up to this degree about bullying in particular is so powerful and I hope it strikes a chord with anyone who is currently going through it. It's never the victims fault. Your bullies are more messed up than they try to make you feel like you are. I wish more could reach this understanding at the time rather than years later.
36:41 EXACTLY!!! This is one of the reasons i was able to finnish my college.
Love her work, have done ever since True Blood....and after watching this, I find Debrah Ann to be a real, sweet person.
Her husband is a lucky man.
Another great podcast Michael.
Thank you.
Relics and Rarities is the best actual play on YT. It helped me get back into D&D after a 10 year break. And it’s the show that I recommend non-D&D players watch when they start playing. Deborah is an utterly fantastic DM!
