Physician here. As soon as he said she had Strep as a child, I knew she had glomerulonephritis leading to kidney failure, which in turn made her breath smell like ammonia. Poor Jean😢. This is why I get so frustrated when some patients say they want to treat infections like strep “naturally.” Any other time, there are people who want antibiotics for a virus, which are useless, then some who refuse them for Strep that causes kidney failure or heart disease. You can’t win😱
Thank you. I am 68 years old, and just had a total aortic valve replacement. I suspect it was pure snobbery that kept my pediatrician from diagnosing scarlet fever half a century ago. It was seen as a disease of poverty and squalid living conditions. Oh, well, I have made it this far!

Jean Harlow was a cousin. She used to go up to Sebastopol California to visit my great grandparents on their farm. She generally came alone but not always. She liked the remote nature of their farm and the country life so she visited as often as possible. She was not flamboyant or crude, she was polite and rather quiet. She enjoyed a good meal and seemed to be very helpful in the kitchen. She was good company. She played with my father and uncle when they were present when she was visiting. She may have been a flamboyant Hollywood personality but with family, she was very normal. I’m just say’n people are not always what you think.
I am convinced you did not read one thing about her life. She was actually an avid reader, extremely smart, even published a book, was forced to dress the way she did and act the way she act, and getting married. She hated dressing up, and hated playing sex idols even more. Her first starting role was terrible but after that she became quite good and was an amazing comedic actress. You really managed to belittle an extremely remarkable person.
The forced abortion when she wanted a family is heart-breaking. She suffered a lot and probably only wanted to be loved. She was beautiful, a wonderful actress and fascinating personality. So sad to die so young. Rest In Peace

Fun fact: Jean Harlow was Marilyn's idol. She used to watch Jean as a child at the Chinese theatre. She liked her because Marilyn had light blonde hair as a child, so did Jean. There's an interview on it. Marilyn also saw Clark Gable as a farther figure, when at the orphanage. Marilyn ( know as Norma Jean. She hadn't changed her name yet). Would imagine Clark coming in and giving all the children crayons. There's an interview of her saying that as well.

My father's great-aunt so my great-great-aunt was Elizabeth Russell. She was the sister-in-law to Jane Russell. And eventually married into the Wanamaker family and those of you on the east coast and familiar with the Philadelphia area will definitely know that name. The passengers that didn’t want to get off the train,Uncle Charles would take their orders. That day.Jesn was very inebriated,and wanted Uncle Charles to go back to California with her. If this was the story of a current actress she would be praised as a professional for her devotion to her craft. Doesn't care who on set sees her nude, always about business. The poor woman. it would have been a really horrible death for her. It’s not just the breath that smells of urine, but as this documentary says, the toxins effect the brain and the sweating is caused by these building up in the cells. Eight days is about the length of time it takes to die without treatment. I suffer from Glomerulonephritis thought to have been caused by strep throat, and it is the type of disease that completely takes over and ruins your life. At least these days we have dialysis machines to try to keep us alive but even so, the side effects and the pain are indescribable as even after five hours at a time on the machine for four days a week, the dialysis doesn’t always work. And it’s really not nice to see anyone posting a video on youtube with such a title whether it is done for shock effect or not to get more patrons.

@@beverlybalius9303 ...not all of them are useless ,but some of them are and it’s getting more each year....I know this for sure because I have an inherited immunological illness which means I can’t fight upper respiratory illness on my own so have lived on antibiotics all of my life....there are at least 4 of the antibiotics I used to take for chest infection that have stopped working because the bug has become resistant...and I am down to the last ones working in some case....these might last another 20 years.....there aren’t any new ones being discovered in some cases as they just can’t find any more....... And....it isn’t the case where the person has taken too many and their body gets too used to them...that’s the myth everyone thinks.....it’s a case of THE BUG that becomes resistant so affects everyone....that’s why, in some countries they don’t have anything for TB now.....and what about the super bugs....things like MRSA?....They are not new bugs.....they are bugs that were treatable with antibiotics once and are now resistant....there are lots of them......if there are no new ones coming through infection will resort to being the biggest killer for us again like before there were antibiotics......I don’t know where you get your conspiracy theory from, but do some research!.....I’m amazed there are people who aren’t educated in this....... I had scarlet fever as a child. It occurred right along with a tornado that brought phone and power lines down and put a massive tree across the only road out of our farm... but at least left our farm buildings(even the chicken coop) and animals (even the guinea fowl) untouched. I was five and I almost died. I still remember my pillow feeling as hot as a heating pad...but so cool when it was turned over. Always after that I was always prone to illness and g.i. system trouble in particular. So I feel for Jean. There were probably many times when she worked even though she felt bad.

I read Clark Gables Biography and of course Harlow was like family to him and Lombard. Unfortunately since her death was to early in her life and caused by an abdominal disease, I assume that could have been a long term issue that probably didn’t help her breathe. Then tragically Lombard died in a plane crash not long after. Poor Clark.
She had uremia and died of renal (Kidney) failure. So did Mozart we think...post streptococcal glomerulo nephritis. Now we have dialysis and kidney transplants.

This was the first video of the channel I watched. And I had to stop midway. While I admire your effort in acquainting people like me about a yesteryear star like Jean Harlow, your script sounds like you have lifted directly from a 1930's tabloid. Love for vintage fashion, vintage cinema or movie stars shouldn't mean love for vintage value systems. Wow. I went into sudden kidney failure myself at 36 years old secondary to multiple myeloma. It rapidly damaged my kidneys. I had the ammonia breath too. I was able to bounce back when we started treating my myeloma.
Hmmm I read an old biography that blamed her kidney damage on a beating she took from Paul Bern when things didn't go well in bed. He was careful not to spoil her face. Whether this s true or not, I can't vouch. It surely would not have helped.
Yes. Scarlet fever causes damage to the heart, not the kidneys, as far as I have read. Edit, well I would have to look up about the kidneys, but the heart damage is well known.
It wasn’t true. There is a really good book by David Stenn that debunks most of the myths. Scarlett Fever many years after the original infection caused the renal failure that resulted in her death. Paul Bern didn’t beat her and had nothing to do with her death.

Paul Bern committed suicide due to the fact he had a common law wife in New York named Dorothy Millette she read that he married Jean followed him to LA and he shot himself and Dorothy left went to San Francisco and jumped off the ferry the Delta Queen in Sacramento. She was found days later jean even paid for her burial.
True, she did start off as a not very good actress, she was a mid teen afterall, but you can track her growth and poise and professionalism almost picture by picture. By the time of "Dinner at Eight" I think one could well argue that she had become one of the great comedic actresses of her time and perhaps all time. She was hilarious and sassy and naughty and loveable and forgivable all at the same time, and her rapport and timing with other actors, especially male, became a thing of exuberant beauty. They felt the magic too, for she was many a leading man's favorite leading lady. Somewhere between Marilyn and Goldie Hawn maybe? Or just Harlowe? Anyway, I sure grew to love her as I became aware of her filmography and enjoy her comedic work especially. A shame she didn't live longer. Fair to say her crazy stage mom killed her as much as made her.

Not remember Jean Harlow? You must have lived under a rock in an undersea cave. Ms. Harlow had tons of talent and grace. Her movies are classics. Her legend still shines bright. She likely suffered from a disease that affects the kidneys called glomerulonephritis (probably spelled wrong). Medicine wasn't very advanced then so it's likely it was missed.
Sadly born and lived in the era before modern medicine, such as penicillin and other life-saving drugs. Rest in peace, you were my grandfathers favorite actress and I always remember my grandmother telling me that. Sad ending for a beautiful woman, thank you God that we don’t suffer as much fr such maladies ; sometimes despite even medication and treatment kidney failure is prevalent in our society unfortunately still today. I just love Jean Harlow I loved her in that movie called dinner at 8. I have it on DVD and I also have Saratoga on DVD she was so professional you would never know that she was sick in that last movie
People definitely didn’t want realism in the 30’s. That’s why the majority of films deal with the wealthy, sophisticated, and/or connected. They wanted to be immersed in a world were money wasn’t an issue & therefore never brought up. While I never thought about it before, though I love Harlow’s films, there aren’t any that are straight up classics. Probably her best and most remembered films are Dinner at Eight and Libeled Lady. Bombshell is my favorite. So many of her films haven’t aged well.
Unlike modern "Hollywood " the 30s made and sold entertainment. Remember the Depression? Life was real, too real. Audiences didn't want realism, they wanted escapism. "Hollywood " now doesn't care about entertaining and really doesn't care about entertaining an audience.
I totally disagree with the comment at 1:45 that none of her films would make a cinema buff’s top 100 list. “Dinner at Eight” would definitely make it. It is every bit as entertaining today.
my dad suffered kidney failure back in 2016. I had found him passed out on the couch, and couldn't wake him. he was sent to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with kidney failure and was in the ICU for 7 days and was put on dialysis. I had no idea that ammonia on the breath was a symptom. that's fascinating, and also disgusting. I also suffered kidney damage in 2019 from Rhabdomiolysis. I had had a severe seizure, and jerked so hard that I dislocated my shoulder, and fell from my bed to the floor. my bed is pretty high off the ground, so it was a hard fall to recover from. I didn't have to have dialysis like my dad did. but my creatinine levels kept going up, so they had to triple my fluid intake. very very scary.

I had an accumulation of ammonia from my fatty liver that turned into chirrosis. I got encephalopathy and couldn’t speak and was like a zombie. I had a liver transplant. I am fine now.

Fun fact: Jean Harlow was Marilyn's idol. She used to watch Jean as a child at the Chinese theatre. She liked her because Marilyn had light blonde hair as a child, so did Jean. There's an interview on it. Marilyn also saw Clark Gable as a farther figure, when at the orphanage. Marilyn ( know as Norma Jean. She hadn't changed her name yet). Would imagine Clark coming in and giving all the children crayons. There's an interview of her saying that as well.

The poor woman. it would have been a really horrible death for her. It’s not just the breath that smells of urine, but as this documentary says, the toxins effect the brain and the sweating is caused by these building up in the cells. Eight days is about the length of time it takes to die without treatment.
I suffer from Glomerulonephritis thought to have been caused by strep throat, and it is the type of disease that completely takes over and ruins your life. At least these days we have dialysis machines to try to keep us alive but even so, the side effects and the pain are indescribable as even after five hours at a time on the machine for four days a week, the dialysis doesn’t always work.
And it’s really not nice to see anyone posting a video on youtube with such a title whether it is done for shock effect or not to get more patrons.

And....it isn’t the case where the person has taken too many and their body gets too used to them...that’s the myth everyone thinks.....it’s a case of THE BUG that becomes resistant so affects everyone....that’s why, in some countries they don’t have anything for TB now.....and what about the super bugs....things like MRSA?....They are not new bugs.....they are bugs that were treatable with antibiotics once and are now resistant....there are lots of them......if there are no new ones coming through infection will resort to being the biggest killer for us again like before there were antibiotics......I don’t know where you get your conspiracy theory from, but do some research!.....I’m amazed there are people who aren’t educated in this.......

I had scarlet fever as a child. It occurred right along with a tornado that brought phone and power lines down and put a massive tree across the only road out of our farm... but at least left our farm buildings(even the chicken coop) and animals (even the guinea fowl) untouched. I was five and I almost died. I still remember my pillow feeling as hot as a heating pad...but so cool when it was turned over. Always after that I was always prone to illness and g.i. system trouble in particular. So I feel for Jean. There were probably many times when she worked even though she felt bad.

I read Clark Gables Biography and of course Harlow was like family to him and Lombard. Unfortunately since her death was to early in her life and caused by an abdominal disease, I assume that could have been a long term issue that probably didn’t help her breathe. Then tragically Lombard died in a plane crash not long after. Poor Clark.
She had uremia and died of renal (Kidney) failure. So did Mozart we think...post streptococcal glomerulo nephritis. Now we have dialysis and kidney transplants.

This was the first video of the channel I watched. And I had to stop midway. While I admire your effort in acquainting people like me about a yesteryear star like Jean Harlow, your script sounds like you have lifted directly from a 1930's tabloid. Harlow died of uremia. Incurable at that time. She only lasted a few days after diagnosis before she died. Today only a liver transplant would have saved her. Tragic.
Wow. I went into sudden kidney failure myself at 36 years old secondary to multiple myeloma. It rapidly damaged my kidneys. I had the ammonia breath too. I was able to bounce back when we started treating my myeloma.

Yes. Scarlet fever causes damage to the heart, not the kidneys, as far as I have read. Edit, well I would have to look up about the kidneys, but the heart damage is well known.
It wasn’t true. There is a really good book by David Stenn that debunks most of the myths. Scarlett Fever many years after the original infection caused the renal failure that resulted in her death. Paul Bern didn’t beat her and had nothing to do with her death.

Paul Bern committed suicide due to the fact he had a common law wife in New York named Dorothy Millette she read that he married Jean followed him to LA and he shot himself and Dorothy left went to San Francisco and jumped off the ferry the Delta Queen in Sacramento. She was found days later jean even paid for her burial.
True, she did start off as a not very good actress, she was a mid teen afterall, but you can track her growth and poise and professionalism almost picture by picture.
By the time of "Dinner at Eight" I think one could well argue that she had become one of the great comedic actresses of her time and perhaps all time. She was hilarious and sassy and naughty and loveable and forgivable all at the same time, and her rapport and timing with other actors, especially male, became a thing of exuberant beauty. They felt the magic too, for she was many a leading man's favorite leading lady.

Sadly born and lived in the era before modern medicine, such as penicillin and other life-saving drugs. Rest in peace, you were my grandfathers favorite actress and I always remember my grandmother telling me that. Sad ending for a beautiful woman, thank you God that we don’t suffer as much fr such maladies ; sometimes despite even medication and treatment kidney failure is prevalent in our society unfortunately still today. Hopefully one day there will be no sickness and death for any disease. What a wonderful day that will be!!!!!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

People definitely didn’t want realism in the 30’s. That’s why the majority of films deal with the wealthy, sophisticated, and/or connected. They wanted to be immersed in a world were money wasn’t an issue & therefore never brought up. While I never thought about it before, though I love Harlow’s films, there aren’t any that are straight up classics. Probably her best and most remembered films are Dinner at Eight and Libeled Lady. Bombshell is my favorite. So many of her films haven’t aged well.

Unlike modern "Hollywood " the 30s made and sold entertainment. Remember the Depression? Life was real, too real. Audiences didn't want realism, they wanted escapism. "Hollywood " now doesn't care about entertaining and really doesn't care about entertaining an audience.

my dad suffered kidney failure back in 2016. I had found him passed out on the couch, and couldn't wake him. he was sent to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with kidney failure and was in the ICU for 7 days and was put on dialysis. I had no idea that ammonia on the breath was a symptom. that's fascinating, and also disgusting. I also suffered kidney damage in 2019 from Rhabdomiolysis. I had had a severe seizure, and jerked so hard that I dislocated my shoulder, and fell from my bed to the floor. my bed is pretty high off the ground, so it was a hard fall to recover from. I didn't have to have dialysis like my dad did. but my creatinine levels kept going up, so they had to triple my fluid intake. very very scary.
She was one hell of a performer.
Poor thing what a life. Doesn't sound like she was happy very often. May she truly rest in peace now.

It can effect your liver also and as you age your filtration becomes effected them you start building up with ammonia
I had an accumulation of ammonia from my fatty liver that turned into chirrosis. I got encephalopathy and couldn’t speak and was like a zombie. I had a liver transplant. I am fine now.
