- The beautiful 500-piece "Moth Girl" by illustrator Yas Imamura is the perfect jigsaw puzzle to demonstrate what I call "Chaos Puzzling". (If you're waiting on the 3000-piece Where's Waldo? video - I needed a little more time! Enjoy this lagniappe video while you wait!)

Dan: We’re not even gonna flip the pieces right side up
Me: *GASP*
😆😆
OMGosh.... four more to go and you hit 1000 with only 8 videos and two shorts...WOW!!!!! HAPPY FOR YOU!!!!!
5:20 - That's a classic CHAOS move: 'predictive placing'!
Sorting is my favorite part. I love it for itself and also the satisfaction of doing all the little mini puzzles I’ve created super fast.
Agreed, I love the puzzling experience after I’ve sorted, everything flows so nicely - doing the mini puzzles I’ve created, like you said. But I find the sorting so dull!
Apparently, I am a chaos puzzler and didn't even know it. I rarely sort unless I have to. I lay everything out face up and start grabbing sections as I see them. I typically do 1000-piece puzzles, but I do have a pretty good-sized table area.
1000 pieces scattered about is too much chaos for me 😆😆 at that point I need to at least lay them out neatly on trays
ooh, my style. Open the box and just go from there, no sorting, but I don't tip all the pieces out. Hey Dan, congrats on the 1k subs, that came about so quickly!
I have a strong aversion to pieces being piled up, I don’t know why. I always have to get them out of the box and spread out!
I had no idea I was a chaos puzzler! I don’t have very much space to puzzle so I sort out all of the edge pieces, then sift through the rest of the pieces leftover in the box, working on the most recognizable patterns and colors first. I tried sorting but I didn’t enjoy it not had enough room so I guess I just added a level of challenge to it since I never have enough space to dump the pieces out! (I typically do 1000 piece puzzles btw)
At the 1000 size, I feel compelled to at least get all the pieces organized in some orderly way, even if I’m not sorting per se. But I’m lucky to have plenty of dedicated puzzling space
Pretty puzzle
Enjoying your content!
I'm a sorter, not a detailed sorter, but I do like to pull out edges and any major colors or words that I see. I like doing the edges first because I like a contained puzzle!! 😄Then I will work on sections that grab my interest. Once I hit sky/grass/water, I sort by shape. It also takes me longer to do a puzzle as well, but I sort on my bed while I watch tv and move pieces to the puzzle, Otherwise I have many furry helpers! Great video, mad me laugh with your disclaimer in the beginning, and LOVE that puzzle!!!
Ah, a bed puzzler! I’ve never been able to do that, I can’t get comfortable and I feel like I’m going to lose pieces if I move too much
I was just very curious how fast you would get to 1000 ..so I have been watching...... ... and you will before the nights over 999 now.... soooo I will be the first to say CONGRATULATIONS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks so much! I was traveling and so not online when the big moment happened, I’m glad someone was watching!! 😆
YT recommended your 3000 piece Waldo video, I subbed up, and am watching backwards 😊 (Just noting so you can see how the algo worked this time.) Glad to "meet" you! "Moth Girl" is beautiful!
Thanks for the sub, and for the data!
I HATE sorting so will grudgingly do a quick edge/non-edge sort but that's it. Then it's just a dump everything out and start grabbing pieces that look interesting. I also hate flipping all the pieces up so will turn a handful over and then see if I can put together anything I've grabbed or if I need to go back and flip more pieces. I do need to have a nice clean working area though, so you starting to puzzle in the middle of all the pieces truly was chaotic to me! 😂
I love chaos puzzle until 500 pieces.
Like the new term and the good art - I get it too ! Keep em coming Puzzlephile.
I only sort when it’s extremely obvious to me which usually ends up being the edges or one specific color. Chaos puzzling is nice because you get to start on the puzzle and become familiar with it before really digging into it
That’s a good point about becoming familiar with the puzzle - one thing I hate about doing a big sort is I often don’t know what I’m sorting until I’m halfway through it. Then I’m re-sorting what I’ve already done, or just wishing I had done it differently
New Subbie here; I guess I’m a chaos puzzler. I don’t like sorting. Great video.
Very beautiful art. I agree chaos puzzling is the most fun when you have a proper puzzle for it. However I like sorting too, so very much looking forward to your 3000 piece Waldo puzzle video
Cool puzzle artwork!
Hmm, well I guess you could say I'm partly a chaos puzzler. I put all my pieces on trays face up, do the outside and then get puzzling picking out relevant pieces for the part of the image I decide to work on. I haven't really got the space to dump all the pieces out. Probably could do that with 500 or less but certainly not for anything over 500 pieces. I think for most puzzlers the image determines the method used to make the puzzle. Look forward to your next video. 🙂
That sounds like my usual method - I always do the least amount of sorting I feel like I can get away with 😉
This is how I've always done puzzles.😂 I've only just recently started sorting. I have only 2 time-lapse puzzles on my channel so far and the puzzle I sorted seems to have gotten more views than the chaos (but all flipped) one. I would need to do more research though. Sorting is helpful sometimes, but not sorting is easier(?) for me.
Just wanted to say I really enjoy your videos! 💜
Thank you!
fun video as always.... I think I am a chaos puzzler too.... I do sections that grab my attention first, if I struggle I move on then come back to it... sometimes I like to do the hard part first just to get it over with I always turn over all the pieces first no matter the count....I enjoy the hunt...... Good going up to 955 subscribers already good for you... I hope you reach 1000 by your tenth video..... you have become one of my favorite channels and yes I'm also waiting patiently on Where's Waldo.....
Glad to know I’m not alone is my chaotic ways!
I don't usually like darker images for jigsaw puzzles but this one is lovely. I do sort on some puzzles but I don't always have the patience for it lol. I guess it depends on the puzzle like you said. Looking forward to part 2 of Where's Waldo.
I think you’ve hit on what I love about this image - it is on the darker side, and yet there’s still plenty variety of color and texture to work on
@@puzzlephile Exactly! 😊
that was a fun little puzzle! it's one you might overlook on their site, but it was so cool! and the chaos puzzling was interesting to watch. i wasn't always sure where you were building or what you would work on next. it made me really lean in and look closely. i love your message that sometimes, it's great to just relax and dive into a puzzle without a big strategy. and i really enjoy the outro with you taking the puzzle apart. your channel is so great!!
Yeah, I thought the time lapse clips were pretty fun from this one, I’m glad you enjoyed it too 👍
First of all, thanks for introducing me to new puzzle brands. I think I have to get this Moth Girl puzzle. 😁 I typically pull out the edge pieces and turn all the remaining pieces face side up first. Then I guess I do chaos puzzling from that point onward, working out of the box (or a larger box I have saved just for that purpose). Like others have said, I don't have a lot of room for sorting, and I tend to prefer lower piece count puzzles at this stage of my life.
I like sorting on difficult puzzles, but I agree it isn't as fun to always sort. Nice image!
lagniappe... haha. having lived in Louisiana for 35 years I totally didn't notice you'd said that until you started explaining it. As for my method- I'd always been a "full flip" person meaning I put all the pieces out and flip them over face up (and pull out the edges to do first.) Then just look at the pieces and see what sticks out. Pull those pieces out and work on them until that part is done then rinse and repeat. But then I started watching Puzzle RUclips and learned about sorting first. Now I do employ sorting, depending on the puzzle. But I really only do 1000 pieces or more so sorting can be helpful when there are distinct areas to sort out. Some images just don't lend themselves to sorting.
I know, I was planning to just call it a lagniappe video, and then when I was filming, it suddenly hit me that I would have to explain what that means😆
I'm more of a search puzzler. I don't sort everything. I pick a distinct section. Search everything that belongs to that, keeping the rest more or less mixed and puzzling the section as I search. So I have two piles of peaces (searched and not searched and my working area). Sometimes I chaos puzzle too. I kind of never sort the whole puzzle. It takes the fun out of searching a piece and finding a different one, that fits elsewhere.
Beautiful image. Unfortunately I don't have enough room to dump the pieces out so I either do the hateful sorting or pick from the box. I usually do the edges first.
I think skipping the edges is the most chaotic part - It makes me feel like such a rebel 😆😆
I really like image...something spooky about it
7:00 - I'm guessing that the puzzle image is a 'zoom-in' of the original. Notice how many of the large features are 'cropped' or very close to the edge.
This is the way I do ALL my puzzles! I also AVOID any poster or box image!
I hate sorting too, and I almost never sort if I'm doing a 500 piece, but I do sort with anything bigger. I almost never do the edges first!! I hate having to put pieces in an empty box, and often sleeves can catch on the edges when I'm working in the middle. So I'll just work on sections first, and usually those sections might have a few edges in them, then gradually I'm putting it all together much like you did with this one. I use trays a lot because I hate having layers of pieces, I want them all easily visible.
It sounds like we are very similar puzzlers!
I sort all puzzles with a higher than 300 count. Even with a 300 I turn all pieces over first and tend to shift/gather them light and dark as the count decreases. Thanks for another fun puzzle🧩video!
Do you enjoy the sorting part, or is it a chore?
I"m rather hesitant to use this Chaos approach on a gradient puzzle, though!
I do not like sorting, I will sort the edge pieces and then for the most part chaos puzzle the rest. Thank you for sharing, nice puzzle image!
Jan van Haasteren style puzzles I tend to do the chaos method. There's no sense in trying to organize those, haha.
Yes there is. I sort out color and theme.
I’ve never done one so I can’t weigh in 🤷♂️ I should try one, JVH is like a whole puzzle genre
Woahhh! Not even flip all of them right side up! 😮
It’s chaos!! 😆
i always do puzzles like this except i dont look at the image or dump them out on the table. i have to rifle through the boxes like a squirrel. i only buy 1000+ piece puzzles. it's extremely inefficient.
I mean, I think inefficiency is sort of the point of jigsaw puzzles, right? 😆
😮😮😮
@@Mellie9876 here for a long time not for a good time
I do the edge then chaos puzzle biggest I have done this way is 3000
I always puzzle like this, I just don't see the fun in sorting everything.
Im not a fan of sorting, but always sort the edges. If there are big chunks of colors I will just separate them into piles, but typically I try to just put two face up piles into each side of the puzzle box lids and then the just sift through to find a lot of the most obvious sections. Then as I get into more complicated sections and I have less pieces I will probably have to start to do some sort of sorting that would make sense for the specific puzzle. But this isn't a hard and fast rule for me though.
That’s the exact same way I approach it. I hate sorting with a passion because I am just not patient enough to work my way through big amounts of pieces, so if I sort into too many little categories from the start I’ll just be left unmotivated 3/4 of the way through.
Flexibility is key, for sure
I’m literally trash at sorting, so i avoid it as much as possible. Chaos puzzling it is :) ;(except for gradient puzzles, where sorting is super easy)
I sort and sort and resort. I prefer puzzles that would lend themselves to chaos puzzling but I don't always get what I think. Painterly puzzles are my least favorite.
I hate sorting. I get the edges out and choas puzzle also
My mother preferentially tries to sort pieces by shape -- I long stopped trying to do that outside the final stage of puzzling, because in a vast majority of cases it maximizes the physical distance between any two pieces that _do_ fit together, which can make them difficult to identify.
I also like to say that theoretically, if you can pair up every single piece with an adjacent single piece, then you've functionally reduced the total "piece count" by half.
Ooh interesting, say more about that - Are you trying to match up pairs of pieces from the start rather than building sections? Or just keeping an eye out for pairs as you work?
@@puzzlephile In practice I just look for matching patterns and match pieces as I go along, "chaos puzzling" as you put it. (Edgepieces counted as their own matching pattern, of course)
I do not sort and I don't see the image on the box 🥴
Sometimes I use the box image and sometimes I don’t- whatever I think is going to be most fun!
Where was the sorting? I came here for the sorting and there was none.
I know, I’m sorry! I’ll sort the next one twice 😁
I hate to sort!!
People come for sorting? ha ha. What's interesting about sorting? It's my least favorite part of puzzling and I sort every puzzle.
