  • This video is about trying to germinate and grow leucospermum tango from seed - using a new method. I also check out the mother plant that gave the seeds and find something under it I couldn't believe.

    I've got a bunch of Tango Leucospermum seeds now, and more to come this spring from the plant(which I planted last year from 5gallon). Thanks very much for posting! Suprisingly, there's a baby volunteer Leucospermum sprouting about a couple inches tall from last year's flowers under the main Tango bush,… though the stem of the baby seedling got nibbled by an insect and so the leafy stem is basically decrepit,… maybe a new shoot will sprout from the stem base.

    Awesome Cool video brother!!! 🌱😎👍 I bought those Smokepads (in South Africa) too! Maybe it's a scam! 😜😂 Never thought of using "Liquid Smoke" as a substitute - very resourceful! 😉 Unfortunately I haven't had the opportunity or time to plant my Leucasperma & Protea seeds...😒 Hopefully sometime soon. (Hope their still viable - I bought them a little over 2 yrs ago. 😶)

    I wonder if any ash that falls from nearby fires is enough to help them germinate. Last year despite the closest fire being a few hours north of here we still had pretty abundant ash coating everything and smokey air for over a week. Anyway enjoy your videos and I'm trying to germinate a mix of different species at the moment. I'm on the coast so temps are in the 40s-50s at night and 60s-70s in the day. Keep in mine that Leucopspermum 'Tango' is an asexually propagated cultivar selection that was grown from a hybrid of L. glabrum and L. lineare. So none of the seedlings will be L. 'Tango'. They may look similar but there may be some variation. Will be cool to see what you get.

    • @growproteas1148
      @growproteas1148  3 года назад +1

      yes - i wonder if the smoke in the air did anything - I really didn't notice any ash in Sacramento - just smoke -
      I didn't know about the asexual propagation - so we will see what the flowers look like - if you ever pass through Sacramento - let me know and i will give you a few of the plants - they are 4 inches tall now and I have too many!

  • @topherhenny5268

    Proteacea dont always need the smoke treatment, it just increases germination. There is a grower who lives near me who grows tons of proteas and pincusions and never uses smoke treatment. The Tango variety might be a hybrid, which would decrease fertility of the seeds.

    Could smoke from the wildfires have gotten to them through rainwater or by passing over the area via wind?

    • @growproteas1148
      @growproteas1148  3 года назад

      I guess it is possible....the seeds germinated about 2 weeks ago and the fires were last August in neiboring counties... there was some smoke in the air back then.... but no ash on the ground.. Will see if they germinate next year assuming there are no nearby wildfires.

    Hello,
    Did you sterilize your soils with boiled water like you did in the past so this time you did not use anti fungicide solution still a success?)
    Also the Wright smoke solution work just fine, I dont have to get the one from Africa?
    I received my seed also from Silverhill and about to germinate them. I'm excited and nervous at the same time. I watched your video numerous time to be sure that I dont miss out any important information. Any tip that ca n lead to successfully germination is greatly appreciated. I live in Watsonville, CA

      In this case I did not sterilize the soil or use fungicide - and so far no problems (it wouldn't hurt though to do these 2 steps). Yes, the wright smoke solution did work.

      Hello,
      Thank you for your rely. I put protea magnifica seeds in the refrigerator today and hope for the best. I just want to reiterate that do all leucospermun seeds need to go thru hot water, h2o2 soak... preparations step bec of their shell (I have Guenzii,Glabrum, Catherinae, cuneiform and cordifolium yellow seeds)
      And for other protea family like Susannae, Compacta, Butchelli, Nerriifolia and cynaroides are you able tell me which one will need to keep inside regrigerator before germination. Thank you for your help

    • @growproteas1148
      @growproteas1148  3 года назад

      Well... if you germinate yourself - then the hydrogen peroxide is necessary to get get the husk covering off the seed ( which happens slowly in nature) - as for the smoke treatment - hard to say...I don't want to make any big conclusions from the spontaneous germination I observed. I will be interested to see if the plant germinates more seeds next winter.
