At the time of filming the Medical Monday Great Day Houston segment sponsored by Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center, orthopedic surgeon Dr. Larry Likover was one of only about 20 surgeons in the country performing total knee replacement surgery with the XP preserving knee implant. Specialized training is required for a surgeon to perform an XP knee replacement procedure.
During the segment, we learn that a lot of people know they need a knee replacement, but because of what they saw their parents or grandparents go through, they are putting it off. However, the XP knee makes a total knee replacement a “whole new operation.”
One of Dr. Likover’s patients joined him in the special segment about the new knee technology. The patient, a nurse, previously had a standard (now called mechanical) total knee replacement performed on one knee and then the new XP knee replacement procedure on her other one. She said she could already tell the difference. “It doesn’t feel like a total knee (replacement) at all,” she said. That’s because with the XP Knee, Dr. Likover was able to leave her natural ligaments, including the ACL, in place. The downtime is more like that of a partial knee replacement than a total one, Dr. Likover said.
