y’all ruin your own experience for yourself by being so nitpicky instead of enjoying it for what it is. they knew ares would have to surrender the helm because gods have to adhere to rules-that’s why they don’t have a shocked reaction. olympus is empty besides zeus and poseidon in the books too because they are preparing for war. the campers are all seen with beads so that’s something viewers can definitely infer, it didn’t need to be explained much. didn’t have superhuman strength?? bruh he could withstand blows with a sword half of ares’s size. the kronos design is that way because he’s still weakened, that isn’t his “final form”. like every single one of your criticisms can be explained of why they made that choice and why it works for the show. continue to be in your pessimistic bubble all you want-it IS likely to get more seasons. it had over 13 million views in the first 6 days. later reports are at close to 30 million. audience scores are HIGH. the main complaint is episode length/number of episodes. that can be fixed w upcoming seasons, especially since it’s done so well making that more likely.

EXACTLY!! They complain about telling and not showing but then when something isn’t explicitly pushed in their face, it wasn’t explained well enough? Never mind that the stuff that they’re outright saying is explaining the myths because you literally can’t show that without flashbacks to Ancient Greece 💀. All the character beats were shown instead of told because that’s more easy to infer.

Two things on Olympus: 1- It's empty because they are at war and all forces would be on the field. 2- Hades palace in the Underworld is supposed to look like Olympus because Hades designed it to be its dark reflection. Especially since Hades cannot go to Olympus without an invitation. Hades throne room only had two thrones while Olympus had enough for the major gods.

20:01 Ive totally got to disagree with you here. They shy away from the abuse Percy's mom endures but then deliberately changed the story of Medusa to be the rape version instead of the 2 lovers having nookie in Athenas temple. They chose to go darker on some lighter plot points and lighter on some darker ones. I dont think they were afraid to show it, they just decided to tweak it and say "what if it had actually gone like this instead?" Sometimes it works better, but i think making smelly Gabe less than a totally d-bag really undermines Sally's sacrifice.

  • @hikari9262
    @hikari9262 5 месяцев назад +21

If we open our minds and try to look at the perspective of the writers, you will determine what they are trying to do.
The main vision of the writers including Rick, is to focus more on character drama, especially with how Rick wrote the first 2 books, where Luke is just an evil villain. Luke in the books only started to become nuanced in Book 3. Percy and Sally had that criminal mind when they even entertained the idea of using Medusa's head to kill Gabe. In the show, it was Gabe's own stupidity that killed him

I do have to say, overall i like the changes, as they hone the theme further in. Combined with the stellar acting, i kept coming back. But i have been noticing a lack of ... Tension-arcs. Like, many episodes are two smaller episodes smushed together, so neither story has time to build and resolve. The extra runtime in the longer epsiodes was so very noticable.

I agree, it’s sooooo *unfortunate* for these two that the series is getting renewed for season 2. Congrats to Uncle Rick and the rest of the cast and crew! ~For the rest of the PJO fandom’s sake, I hope that their reaction series doesn’t continue (insert giant middle finger).~ By all means, it’s definitely not a perfect show, but it’s a wonderful adaptation of a beloved book series. Anyways, enjoy my critiques below and see ya’ll never:
      • 1:56 “(sarcastically) That scene was wild!” while missing the point to reinforce the already established precedent that demigods are used by gods to break rules (e.g., Dionysus with Percy and Chiron explaining it in ep. 2)
      • 4:12 “Has there been an earthquake?” Yes, the radio literally just talked about sudden ioniospheric disturbances (as a way for the mortal realm to explain Poseidon’s attacks on Zeus’s domain) just seconds before sputtering your question.
      • 5:51 laughs and jokes over the brilliant writing decision to move Annabeth’s arachnophobia (which they complained about not being included back in ep. 5 - you can restructure/rearrange the story in an adaptation, it’s not a wild concept) to later in the series to create parallels to the god-demigod relationship.
      • 9:02 The writers are definitely going to move that iconic line to a different season for a greater emotional payout. Instead of appreciating how amazing the Scobell’s and Stephen’s facial acting portray Poseidon’s obviously *implied* answer of how much he loves Sally, he nitpicks over a minor detail that pales in comparison to this more emotionally-charged scene change.
      • 9:45 “(sarcastically) Wow, there’s nothing more exciting than putting the cheers under sad, slow music.” Woah, it’s as if the applause was intentionally silenced to convey how Percy doesn’t really care for *kleos* at this moment since the repercussions of the quest are much greater than just completing it. Read between the lines.
      • 10:20 It only feels disappointing to you both because you’re both coming into the episode with a hypercritical mindset that will only make you expect disappointment. It is a form of entertainment, so why not just be entertained instead of nitpicky.
      • 16:10 “Wait, so we don’t get to see them come back together?” Yeah we did. We basically got a version of their reunion with the first half of the dream sequence, and their actual reunion would’ve gone the same way with the same amount of emotional payoff. This version just comes with the added twist for book readers (not book purists) to appreciate.
      • 19:32 Just as simple as looking up Riordan’s reason for why they cut Smelly Gabe’s character from the show for a more PG version. The “thing that would make him interesting” is respectfully removed from being visually depicted in a show targeted to younger audiences.

imho you guys don’t understand what it’s like to have ADHD or dyslexia or both and even since you liked the book you missed the whole point of the book series and now the show that it’s about showing mainstream society that ADHD is real and that it’s not just something that people get over it. Also the whole thing with the Percy being a wanted fugitive realy wasn’t needed in the show. Also the Sally and Poiseidon scene is showing that Sally doesn’t know what to do or how to help Percy having ADHD and dyslexia and that’s why she is relying on the teachers and doctors to help her do what’s right for Percy but she doesn’t want to Percy away but she doesn’t know how to help him and talking to Poseidon helped Sally see that it will be hard but she will find a way to help Percy. And Sally does figure out how to help Percy learn and to deal with his learning disabilities and she figures out that being around someone like Gabe hides Percy from the monsters. So that’s what the Sally and Poseidon scene was about.

@@juliana-fu8hi currently using the volume for filming ends up costing roughly around what filming on location costs. Booking the space is not cheap, we are talking a starting price of $30,000 a day just to use it.
Just because you are possibly removing some post processing VFX (an astonishing amount of volume footage ends up getting rotoed anyways) doesn’t mean you are save money. That cost is just is just moved to preproduction VFX that has to build the fully 3D environments (which requires specialists that come at a premium) and the props that help integrate the environment.
The volume wasn’t meant to have everything filmed on it, it was designed to be an alternative to green screening, with the real main benefit being near perfect subject lighting. Covid is what pushed the “film everything in the volume” style of production.

Something weird in this episode is there are moments that are powerful with context from the book but weren't given necessary context in the show itself. For example, Annabeth giving Percy her necklace is a sweet moment if you know what that means to her, but the significance of the beads wasn't established in any of the earlier episodes.

Just taking a peek at the directors that worked on the show, and I think that's absolutely where the main problem lies. The people directing this have worked on Jessica Jones and Daredevil, Helstrom, , a Netflix vampire thing, and some post-apocalyptic show called See. Their notable credits are all from their work in the nihilstic grim adult drama genre. Hence These 12 year old kids are giving us a serious tone when it shouldn't be so serious all the time. And there are glimpses of more. But I definitely think they need to bring in someone with more comedy and action under their belt.

Man, so many negative commenters, but I actually agree with you for the most part. I liked Grover a bit more than you did, and Annabeth a bit less, but overall I felt the same way. This show just didn't have any of the fun and lighthearted-ness the book had. And I got really tired of them going into any situation and knowing immediately what was going on, and immediately saying that out loud. Even if the show justifies it sometimes (like with Hermes' letter explaining Procrustes), I think it was a bad decision since it kills any tension the scene might have. I was also shocked when you mentioned Percy's actor is the kid from the Adam Project, because I loved that movie! And I loved him in it, he had so much personality! They are all kinda non-chalant about most things and since the book is written from percy's perspective all the sass and surprise is internal. My advice for the next director (which i'm hoping we get a new one) is: let walker be walker
They tamed him so much in this show when he literally is percy jackson, you can see it in every interview of his
And not only him but Leah and Aryan too, the lack of emotion during this journey made the whole thing look bad, everything that happened we didn't feel it cause it looked like they weren't feeling it (they looked like this 😐 all the time)
So yes, maybe under new command season 2 gets better
Just let the kids be the kids, man

    The Good:
    - The show at least attempted to follow the overall plot of the books better than the movies did.
    - Some of the acting is actually pretty good. Walker Scobell is a great Percy, that is, when the writers actually decide to make the character feel like the same one from the books. Charlie Bushnell as Luke, Lin-Manuel Miranda as Hermes, Adam Copeland (Edge) as Ares, Jay Duplass as Hades, Toby Stephens as Poseidon, and Lance Reddick as Zeus all put in some good performances.
    The Bad:
    - Annabeth and Grover feel like completely different characters from the ones in the books to me. This may not be Leah Jeffries and Aryan Simhadri fault, because they seem like good actors. It could just be bad direction, bad writing, or maybe just the wrong casting.
    - On the note of casting, there was a lot of drama when Leah and Aryan were announced as Annabeth and Grover. And while I do ultimately agree that the most important thing is how well the actor portrays the character, I would be lying if I said it didn't make it harder for me to believe that the on screen characters were the same as their book counterparts.
    - They made Gabe just kind of a loser instead of an asshole like he was in the books. Although I don't remember if it was ever actually stated in the books, it was heavily implied that he was physically abusive. In the books it actually felt like Sally was sacrificing her happiness and wellbeing by being with Gabe for Percy's sake. Where as in the show it felt like Sally was always in control and Gabe was only around because he was useful to Sally. That is, if you actually read the books and understood what his usefulness was.
    - The show doesn't explain anything anywhere near as well as the book does. So if you have never read the book, I would miss out on a lot of important information.
    - The pacing was so fast. The good thing about a tv series adaptation is that you can take your time to fully adapt the book. And while we did get the major locations of the book, it felt like we were jumping from place to place too quickly and we never spent more than 10 minutes in 1 location. It was very odd that we only got that one scene of Luke training Percy at the end of the show instead of at the beginning, when were actually at the camp.
Overall, this isn't a bad 1st season of a show, it was just okay. And it's really unfortunate, because there is stuff her that I do really like. I just think that the show ultimately does a subpar job at adapting a really good book. It's still ultimately better than the movie though.

You seem to be getting a lot of pushback on your negative opinions of the show in the comments so I thought I'd just say that I personally completely agree with all of your criticisms, I think a lot of people who are defending it are just book fans that are coping and trying to force themselves into liking the show. Also, some people say your criticisms are nitpicks, which is totally untrue, the story, dialogue, pacing, tone and vibe of the show being bland is definitely not a nitpick.

This ep did feel like it was 50-60 mins at some point and got cut down.
Maybe something was flubbed and they couldn’t reshoot or maybe they were too expensive to vfx, I dunno.
It’s a weakness of American style filmmaking where they shoot lots and just keep chipping away and removing because all the scenes that are left were made with the idea the other information would still be there.
Like most of the time it still works but others you are confused cos characters are behaving a way cos of a cut scene and no longer make sense.
I like a lot of what’s here individually i just don’t think it flows. It’s the same throughout the season as a whole but even on a micro level, the Ares fight has good parts but they don’t flow between them well.
Tho speaking of Ares, having him have Percy completely in his grasp for like five seconds with his sword arm perfectly angled to skewer him but him not doing so was a choice. Just have him throw the kid immediately so it doesn’t look dumb.
I am also glad they concluded Grover’s character arc, shame the arc wasn’t actually in the show, but hey they concluded it.
And for Gabe, by removing the uncomfortable stuff they really just made this a mean spirited moment.
Like he didn’t even seem mean with Sally just reheat they were emotionally charged ppl, they had to do a bit more work later with him blaming Percy but they mostly kept him innocent so he gets murdered cos Percy was a goof who sent a weapon of (not really) mass destruction to Olympus.
It’s not only a problem with this show cos we also have the ppl in charge of Netflix’s live action avatar proclaiming how brave the are for removing less savoury aspects from characters (even tho those got addressed in 4 eps and the character learns how to behave better in a Nickelodeon animated show nearly 20 years ago, in 2024 it’s too much to expect the audience to handle. Apparently)

To be fair the show makes it seem like they're there for like 2 seconds because they never show Percy learning any of the information he does learn at camp, so when he uses it on the journey it seemingly comes out of nowhere.

Well, I must admit this all felt quite underwhelming... not bad, but nowhere really shiny. I havent read the books but I'm really afraid that ship has sailed for me. I'm sure I would have loved them when I was 12 but, well... there are so many fantastic sci-fi/fantasy writers out there to read instead.
But curious to check season 2 when it drops. I mean, the creators of Black Sails (the best TV show ever alongside The Expanse imo) are behind this and it took them a bit to find their stride there, so who knows...

The books are leagues better than the show so I wouldn’t rule them out. I think they’re still enjoyable and compelling as an adult, and they have a ton more depth than the series.

Oh here we go 🙄. The way y’all are talking as if you know anything and then all the facts are wrong LMAO. So, firstly, filming wrapped March 2023, so literally less than a year ago and the writer’s room for season 2 was greenlit before the strikes so yeah lol. Maybe let’s do a little more researching before we say things.
I also just find it really funny that y’all have all these criticisms of the show and then when people check you and say you’re wrong because you just didn’t pay attention, it’s still somehow the show’s fault even though everyone else was able to figure it out expect you lmao. Okay.
And the real insane part is saying you hope the show gets cancelled because you want Leah (who got her big break because of the show and loves the series so it would be the last thing she would want) can “move on”. As if she isn’t in every interview and post talking about how excited she is to adapt the rest of the books.

    • @nicoleterego
      @nicoleterego 5 месяцев назад +4

Oh, they said that about Leah? I didn't watch all their videos cause the nitpicking is too much but that's just nasty. The trio are everywhere promoting the show and have been expressing how eager they are to do all five and even heroes of olympus. They love the source material and very enthusiastic about it. The least thing she'd want is for it to get cancelled. Omygod.

@@nicoleterego it literally breaks my heart how much she went through and endured for this show, all for people to say they hope it gets cancelled? And then to have the nerve to try and say it would be for her benefit smh. Leah deserves to be cemented in fandom history as the one and only Annabeth Chase. We deserve to see a young black girl as the lead and primary love interest in a fantasy tv show. The show won’t get cancelled obviously because the viewership and fan reception (apart from a few people like these guys) is so good, but I imagine if it did get cancelled, all the people who harassed her would crawl out of the woodworks again. I don’t know how anyone could wish for that. I’d rather have a “bad” show (which this is not) than have Leah be subjected to that again.

@@leilahussain9171 well we don't "deserve" a person of any race to play this certain role because skin color has nothing to do with this character. Therefore the actor's skin color should be irrelevant. And equating the racist comments made against Leah to people saying a show she was in is bad, is INSANE.

@@supernovaskies5044 maybe actually fucking read and comprehend what I’m saying. Y’all are so fucking miserable, you see people celebrating feeling represented on screen and immediately have to try and knock them down. You see someone saying that wishing for a cancellation is harmful and you can’t comprehend why because you have the most basic level understanding of how racism plays a factor in all of this. Idgaf if you think the show is the worst thing on the planet, you still shouldn’t be praying on its downfall when you know it will only lead to more hate.

That's my point we already knew about the prophecy, during that scene we know Luke is basically the last option, we did not need them to spell it out for us like they did imo. Whatever i still liked the episode and the show in general
