It'd be kinda cool if they hired the artist to make a new interpretation of SCP-173 with the specific intention of it being used for SCP-173. That way, Peanut gets to stay in some form, and the artist gets paid and recognized even more for his work!

I wish there was a more symbolic way of taking down 173’s original visual to introduce a new original image for it: like, an addon to the wiki that states that 173 has somehow “broken out” of its “shell” and now has a “new form”, hence the old image is now defunct and outdated. That way, new SCP fans can read 173’s wiki and immediately familiarize with its new form while old SCP fans won’t feel like the new form seemed “out of nowhere” because the new form is somehow part of its lore.
That would be pretty cool!
I cant remember, but I think it was in the Avalon video by The Exploring Series where 173 was respected in an alternate universe and it stopped killing and started tranforming into different things every day in a museum. It just wanted to be looked at and enjoyed, so overnight it transforms into a new piece of art. I wonder if we could somehow use that bit of lore to our advantage?
In an alternative universe, peanut becomes a safe class SCP and is placed in a public museum for observation as it's containment procedure, as a piece of art to be admired, and for that it changes form and moves into different poses to keep the public in awe.
So there's precedent for it changing forms.
@@the1onesquirrel9 perhaps it changes form from not being observed enough

The best alternative actually would have be simply asking Mr. Izumi, since his style and work is so deep ingrained into everything that is 173, if he'd be willing to contribute an "official" illustration to act as Peanut's portrait. It'd be the best of both worlds keeping the same feel as the original as it's made by the same artist, while also being CC compliant, not to mention send a massive amount of goodwill Mr. Izumi's way and to his other works.
I think that’s a pretty good idea
Agreed
Would be, but I think it would be very damn expensive too
Sure but I hope you're not under the impression that you could request something like that without offering pay. He seems like a well respected artist and it wouldnt be cheap to commission him. One of the reasons (if not THE reason) for the removal, is the commercialization. Now that some of the SCP games are available to purchase, they not only go against cc, but the artists wishes. It was ok when the games were free, but not anymore.
I'm glad they take things seriously. The wiki has grown so much that it has to take laws in to consideration.

I was so sad that they couldn't make miniature statues of the SCP because of copyright tho. I wanted my own little peanut to listen/read scps with.
Best not to keep those statues around anyway. They can be a real pain in the neck! /s
Copyright aside, it really sucks to find out the original picture got yoinked without credit (im sure some people who are more versed in the SCP fandom knew the artist, but i had no idea). It definitely is a good call on the side of the SCP wiki's management, only fair to the artist. Having your creation loved by thousands is nice but being properly credited is equally important, especially for creatives.
If I remember, the artist was very happy that his creation was popular. The issue was the thousands of people using it for money for things like merch, games, films, etc. if no money was made it might be fine.
@@samuraijackoff5354 It’s an understandably tough position to be in, your creation is beloved by untold millions, but you earn nothing from it.
Exposure doesn’t pay the bills, and artists live and die by credit. They need money the same as everyone else, and it’s unfair that others used his art and made bank off it while the majority didn’t even know his name. That said, I find it very telling that he didn’t ask them to take it down - shows me he’s a man with great respect for all forms of art, even ones that in a way harm him.
Yeah, some people is willing to pay a streamer to say their name but would never donate a penny to an artist.

I'm glad that Izumi was so gracious as to allow this, but his humility is amazing. After all, despite the situation, he gained much widespread by-proxy exposure without sacrificing his dignity. I wouldn't be able to be so humble.
How much exposure did he really get though? Not that many people would have been able to name him before this IN the SCP community, let alone the general public.
@@anguishedcarpet I think more people than you might suspect. The fact that that image was not compliant to the site rules was a little factoid that pops up every now and again when exploring SCP related materials. I’m not very involved in the community but even I knew the story behind it. At the end of the day though, even if very few people follow the trail to discover his artwork, it’s still more than would have happened otherwise with absolutely no exposure.
@@anguishedcarpet i mean almost a million people know this now, haha
I knew his name even though I never searched it myself. Pretty much every time a picture of his work was posted on /x back before it was the garbage hole it is now somebody would ask the origin and people would point the to the real artist.
Just good to see a creator take it in stride and be firm but fair when it comes to their art being used. It's just such a legal (and moral) minefield when it comes to ownership/use of art these days it feels like playing russian roulette if you are gonna get hit with a lawsuit.
it's not a minefield silly, creator put in writing his consent for permission to the foundation to use that image. that morally and legally means it's okay and no he cannot just suddenly sue them without warning when there aren't even any damages to be spoken of. literally wtf is this madness
Honestly, I'm glad that the original artist allowed their artwork to be used in this way, and I can completely understand SCP's decision here.
Generally speaking as some who likes stories, gaming and does art, I think it actually makes the whole “share you ‘memory’ of peanut/Untitled 2004” very good for story development, as we have real-life stories like this. While an older generation tells and depicts peanut, the next will then interpret that into their own peanut, and it becomes like a retelling into a legend. Of course, that’s just a “big picture” and there is the internet/SCP community themselves to find the original image, but I’d like to see what will happen in the future to our SCP-173 and how it may change.

Here’s my main problem, is I think pretty much every other design for 173, is kinda inferior, non of them are really as good to me as the original. It has the perfect combination of everything to me, mystery, strangeness, creepiness, silent menace, every other image just didn’t have it to me, it didn’t capture it’s feel, it was either just it again but slightly different or so different that it just isn’t the same. And if all others are just it again just shaken around, or so different it doesn’t have the same lightning in a bottle effect, and the original creator says “yeah sure” then I frankly find no point in changing it.
I think the issue is that the new designs try too hard to replicate the original 173 design when they really should be trying something different.

I used to read a lot of SCP stuff back in like 2014 but with time i slowly drifted away from it, and from time to time i do get the urge and binge a bunch of it, i haven't been super happy with the current direction of the Wiki but most of it i think is due to it's unique structure as a open source universe that anyone can join, so its not something that makes me feel bad.
The peanut sculpture was always interesting to me because i remember reading about how the original piece of art being created as some kind of good thing, i don't remember the exact details but i think it was called something like "The Friend" or something similar, but with the popularity and impact 173 had on internet culture, it warped the meaning of the art into something different, and i think that brings a interesting discussion to light about who truly decides the meaning of art, the artist or the observer.
So despite me disliking some things about the wiki i think removing the image is a good choice, we should thank the artist for being kind enough to allow us to use it for so long without many headaches, despite my liking of 173, part of me feels really bad about the effect it had on the original piece, and maybe even on the artist's career.

Even with the correction of it being the author of the article, not the Izumi, I still feel that him allowing them to use it is the true purpose of art. The vast majority of people who've ever heard of the original artist have done so because of the SCP wiki. If it wasn't for the author of the original entry, Kato would still be stuck in obscurity as an online indie artist likely to never get a similar big break like the one the Wiki gave him.

I hope someone can keep the "peanut-y" and cuteness while redesigning 173. There're so many redesigns out there that only kept his horror side. However, 173 to me, he is the Peanut, who is both horrifying and cute at the same time. He has two different sides simultaneously which is the reason why I like him a lot... It’s kind of one of those sticky situations that you often see in writing, where sometimes the author’s intent clashes against the reader’s interpretation and comes to question of what is the true meaning and how it should be viewed. The author may not agree with the readers interpretation, and may be frustrated it became commonplace, but likewise often without that interpretation it would have never transcended its original meaning to begin with, and may have not reached as wide of a scope. It can definitely be a mixed sort of situation

Removing the image makes complete sense and I agree in every front, it’s just hard to accept it because of how incredibly iconic Peanut is. Also not replacing the image is a really good fix because almost every other design of 173 just looks… wrong? Not bad, just doesn’t hold the same energy or mystery behind it.
"Mystery" is the perfect way to describe Peanut 173's charm, because no other design has conveyed that feeling of "WTF am I looking at??" You don't know what to make of 173 at first look, what are the details of its face, can it even move its limbs? is it malicious or completely indifferent? Does it even possess sentience of any kind???
So many people draw designs that are way to overly eldritch horror inspired, others just make its features too obvious, like the Fractured Minds version, which just looks like a concrete automaton. 173 needs to be both unassuming AND uncannily eerie.
That’s exactly how I feel about it. They aren’t bad, actually a lot of them look pretty kool, But it’s just not right for some reason. They just something missing about it… idk.. ya .-.

Izumi is smart, 173 has given him years and years of free advertisement - without even trying.
I disagree with the sentiment that it's "not the image". It was the image of Untitled 2004 that inspired Moto42 to come up with a "story", write it in a way that was completely different to every other creepypasta of the time, and get on 4chan to post the original SCP entry.
Without that image, more than likely no Foundation.

Moto42 heard about weeping angels and saw this image, put two and two together and came up with 173. It was because of the unique concept and what he saw in untitled_2004 that allowed him to kickstart this massive project. If we are going to find a replacement for it, people need to stop looking at 2004 and start looking at the original doctor who weeping angels episode.

Don't say, "It's harming the original artist." The Izumi Kato s is happily allowing people to use his work, and has not requested that the picture for SCP-173 be changed.
Don't say, "It harms the original artwork." Again, Izumi Kato is fine with SCP using the artwork. He clearly does not think that it is harming his art, or he would've requested a change.
The only reason why this is being done is because SCP wants to make all their articles adhere to the new standards of the site. That's fine. I understand why they would want to do that. But I'm not going to stand here and let people dress up those actions and pretend that it's some noble behavior to protect Izumi Kato. Izumi Kato did not ask for this. Izumi Kato does not need this. Stop pretending that this is all for him.
I wouldn't even know why kato would even want to request the image removal?
It gotten so popular that people started to look for sources and relatable stuff. Finding both HIS work and the scp foundation.
He got some serious spotlights on him because of the foundations massive growth in popularity
As our wonderful RUclips stated, the foundation is wanting to clean up the wiki simply to protect itself, the content, the fans, and people such as the Esteemed Artist from assholes who would rather hack and blackmail everyone for money. That's reasonable and honorable to all.
If the artist makes a new piece specifically to replace the old for the wiki that would be awesome and would help protect the IP from those who would do it harm. Perhaps woth some friendly suggestions and maybe some donations by the fan base it xould be possible.
Unless the artist comes out and says "I allow this, or I'm fine with this" the copyright intent does not change. This might seem fine, but If someone brings up a court case, the copyright holder cannot legally just be unrepresentative of their own copyright. Well technically they could just push it to a public domain license or something, but they aren't supposed to act like it's okay "without" saying it. A case of where this has backfired is with the obey andre the giant art. The owner of the art made some of his money back, but he has probably lost out on a ton of money from people stealing the art, it was even in video games without permission. So, even if he is fine with the art, legally the copyright hasn't changed. Perhaps in court, the artist could argue that due to some medical issues, he didn't have the knowledge to adjust his copyright intent and thus by proxy isn't intentionally under representing themselves; but that's so much more difficult than just adjusting your copyright intent yourself, it literally can take 1 minute to do that while a court case can cost thousands.
