    How come the second set is a minus negative 4, but it is addition for the third set?

      It is the rule for solving 3×3 determinant you have to add 1st and 3rd set while 2nd set has to be subtracted.

      In calculating a determinant with cofactors (multiplicating numbers on first row here) and minors (the smaller 4 number determinant) , you need to alternate signs from left to right on rows and up down on columns (if you were to use a column instead of row).

    why did you do - the second number in the first row then + the third number in the first row? is that the rule? first number (on first row) - second number (on first row) + third number (on first row)

    swapping the rows will change the determinant....you have to be very careful
