i drew 4 years for college entrance and this blew my mind. the goal of redering thing was to match exact value to the reference and i didn' like doing that and i got to know why now. that wasn't design at all. there were no decision making in that. after understanding this core intention behind these rendering design, i enjoy looking at and making art more.
Great video! I have a hard time staying disciplined about keeping a consistent tone and value in the shadows - can’t wait to watch the rest of the videos on this topic.
I bought your book six days ago and received it from Amazon today and I love it.You explain things so much more simply than the other art books I have.I especially love the simple head diagrams and photos with the action lines showing what you mean. That is very helpful.
Chrissss! It's Gina From Steve's DFL. Once that course comes to completion, I am signing on to one of your courses. Perhaps the Mentoring side... We'll see. Love your work - love your careful explanations. Folks, Chris is the Real Deal, if you didn't know it! See you soon in a DWC class. --GinaT
This was unbelievably helpful. I've been struggling with tonal values for a while and been really discouraged. Now I understand better what I am struggling with... the word 'fall-out' hit me square between the eyes.
thanks, I have been wanting to work on improving my value definitions. my linework is OK but separating values is hard (often muddy in execution). the concepts about having consistency of tone/value (and having a gradient along a particular value definition) were very informative.
Thank you for the lesson, theses are some solid advice! May I ask where could you find good reference photos like the ones you've used in the video? I find the clear division between light and shadow really helpful for studying values. I'd love to purchase them for practise if they are available.
Hey mornin. Afternoon. And evening. Just to say I’ve just subscribed I’m im London England. I’m going to browse you vids and maybe fingers crossed most definitely learn something although everything look great and so informative. Hopefully I’ll upload something you you to critique. Also I’m an amateur.
Hi Chris, thank you for the video. I'm training light and shadow with your videos and IG posts since 2020. The look of your halfway sketches are my favorite and I tend to copy this method every time. Can you tell us the name you mention in 54:22? (I'm not a English speaker and didn't understand that name hahahhahah)
the model here is a good one, although I,d say (knowing a bit about Body building) that he is disproportionate, which seems obvious. His arms & lower leg/calves arent as developed as his broad thick chest, so...on the subject of changing/enhancing things, I would try to correct this as well as change lighting, generally it's best to stick with the...laws of lighting the chest is the centre of the body where the eye is first drawn, & so it looks best with the most highlights as you see it already, especially under this CARRAVAGIO type lighting it looks so dramatic that it doesnt require much change, if anything the image needs to be simplified, it would be very easy to over do it. you offer some good tips about values, a LOT goes on within shadows themselves doesnt it there can be variations of darkness & sometimes muted colours can be seen in them, as the ground plane reflects things back
