- LS swaps are so common these days, even in a Miata chases. This guy decided to take a similar route, but powered by FORD! This Miata had a pretty big tire on for such a little car and man did it HOOK! Watching this little thing RIP off the line was the best part! What do you guys think?

I'm 51 and people think I am 15 with the stuff I build and drive. Life is too short to do boring shit and drive appliances.
Some say he's only 25 and he looks 60 after trying to fit a miata around that v8 and a 9inch diff 🙋♂️🇦🇺
We were pitted next to him and his family (my maroon mustang in background) by far some of the nicest and coolest people to meet and talk to. They helped me push my car on the trailer after I broke my driveshaft.
Ahh, to be a part of the racing community. They are great people to be around!

matt hill I went 11.1 running the 11.0 class. I run 10.90’s when the DA is not 3800 and 90+ degrees.
Now THAT is some drag racing. Classic stick shift with a big engine in a small car! As Ric Flair would say, “WOOOOO!”

What I really like about this build is the fact that for a long time, Ford and Mazda had a partnership. Ford even owned part of Mazda at 1 point lol

That's not a cobra jet. The first modern cobra jet came out in 2008 (S197). That's just a paint job
Yeah it’s definitely not a “real” cobra jet. It’s probably built well. But the Cobra jets run hella fast. That car was gonna go fast, but the driver or something messed up. Of course a real cobra jet with a good driver would crush just about anything.

The fact that he stuck a Cleveland, a man trans and a 9" Ford rear in a Miata is cool enough....but the Ford Maverick shirt.....anybody who knows about factory small block Mavericks know about those shock towers...tells you all you need to know.

@@freddieshields5697 The Windsor that came in the Maverick was tight enough ( spark plugs/exhaust manifolds ). The builder/driver of this Miata did an awesome job getting all the Ford goodness to fit in a super tight package.
Gotta love Tony, I've been around him since I was a kid. Messed around on lots of bikes but that miata was really the cool one. Good friend, and awesome racer.

Impressive little car with an iron head on it. Seems to be a good engine. Tell him I love him. Lol
First time seeing a Cleveland head run? Think big block valves and ports on a small engine with half the weight of a big block, and ya get the idea. The 4V has HUGE ports, they rival the 426 hemi in size.
@@SweatyFatGuy Absolutely not. Yes I have ported CHI's and all that mess. Built a couple engine master's clevor or winland engines or whatever ya wanna call em. Just saying you don't see alot of stock iron heads nowaday. Runs pretty good na.

The original v8 Miata swap is the Ford 5.0. Check out "Monster Miata" brand.
Ppl forget that the 4.6 from ford was, for a long time, liter for liter the most potent v8 made.

@@cali2468that was my bad I didn't specify. I was talking about the factory 4.6's that came in the stangs. U could take them and build them and get the same but often more power than bigger motors from competitors.
Except for the obvious such as Boss 302.
The 4.6 is a reliable taxi engine!
Those Clevo heads are HEAVY though, as is the rest of the Clevo.
@@ldnwholesale8552 Taxi engine? Do your research! But but STOCK 4.6 4V heads have went low 6's/high 5's in the 1/4 mile. That's one fast taxi! Lol And a 351C weighs about 50-65lbs more than a 302 but makes way more power obviously.

Last I knew 'open' cars needed a full cage when running 13s, but that was in the 90s when the 6 point rule dropped from 11.99 to 11.49, so its not NHRA based rules. Reminds me of outlaw tracks in South Carolina where I used to race and watch people run complete junk with welded diffs chucking axles across the property.

That was RAD. Miata seems to be the go-to cheap anything car to turn into anything like the Old VW days. The Monster Miata has been around for a long time. Just a year ago when I was leaving California I had the opportunity to meet the owner of Monster Miata out of San Marcos, CA at a gas station filling up a Miata. After talking a while he said this is a Coyote Crate engine swap for a customer. My mouth just dropped.

Shades of the days when Monster Miatas were a thing. This one is even more monstrous, with canted-valve heads and more cubes. What a fun machine. Need something approaching a Glidden level canted-valve engine to not have to even worry about those modern Cobra Jets, though.

A v8 miata would be insanely fun... But the cost to swap one is pretty ridiculous if you aren't a fabricator. The swap kits range from $4500 to $7000 depending on if you get the monster miata or the v8 roadsters kit. Then you need an aluminum v8 (iron block adds too much weight and goes against the nature of the car) with a trans and a new rear end. An ls1+t56 combo w/harness is about $4500-5000, then you'll need to cut down the harness or buy a standalone such as the Holley EFI systems. I added it up one day and to swap an ls1 (with a cam and supporting mods), t56, Holley EFI, Ford 9in with LSD, and the swap kit will be anywhere from $15k to $20k and that's before you consider the nickel and diming that comes with swapping an engine. It can be done for cheaper if you can do your own fab work and modify the harness yourself.

Yeah, that guy was great. I also love the fact that he is running a Ford. Chevy's are cheaper and easier to find parts for, but Fords seem to hold up longer and better.
I have a Monster Miata with a 5.0 Mustang in it, set up for the street. Use it as a daily driver. It is sooooo much fun to drive.

its basically a modern shelby cobra if i think about it. the miata has smoother lines and funny enough. carries some of the AC cobras lines too. I wouldnt be surprised at all If japan already had the cobra first.

Keep in mind was a all cast factory 4v Cleaveland heads on a stroker Windsor block 408 cubic inches not shocked you look back on Bob Glidden running all cast 4v 351's in Pinto's running low 9's in the early 80's very strong engines for there time and considering they was all factory with after market cam and pistons.

You're right, a Miata would be the equivalent of the Sunbeam. Probably cheaper too when you adjust for inflation. Would be great to see a lot of different takes on a Miata Cobra, not just a drag racer.

Do convertibles not have to have a roll bar to race in that class? Those style bars do absolutely nothing in a rollover, they just told along with the windshield.
Personally, I prefer my Miatas with a racing beat kit and a 13B-REW, but it’s hard to argue with those slicks and an SBF.

As far as I know Ford never made any Cobra Jets in the SN95 body style. I believe that is just an SN95 Mustang with Cobra Jet decals...
