I was in ND for 5 months after I graduated Lineman school. It absolutely sucked and I only earned a little bit more money than I would have if I stayed home in CA. But if it wasn’t for that time in ND I wouldn’t have landed the job I have now at home making $150k+.
I was in Williston from 2010-2014. Went up there all by myself after a break up in a long term relationship. Started hauling production water and worked my way up to crude oil making the big bucks. Enjoyed every bit of it (except those -20/-30 even -40 degree nights)!!! I have to be honest…North Dakota was very good to me, especially financially. Came back to the big city with a very high credit score, nice chunk of change in the bank and a brand new car paid off in less than 3yrs. I hear/see some of the horror stories and I could see ND not being for everyone. Go up there open minded and ready/willing to work god awful hours and you’ll do just fine. I’d definitely go up there again if I had to for work, this time I know what to wear to stay warm!😂
Here in williston now, working for PTW. Pretty steady work, and a lot of people came back. Nice to see a little history. Moved my family up with in a month and half of working here. Damn good money.
Thank you for your time and I appreciate that you left the comment I've been up here since 14 and I've seen quite a bit still learning and still growing
I literally used to live in the white farm house with the big red barn at the bottom of the big hill going into Trenton. You can’t see it, but it’s behind the big hill on the right at 21:32 Moved out there out in 2011. Been there since 2018 till I moved back to Minnesota. I miss ND and their huge skies.
We are still here and doing great! The economy is wonderful, and no the man camps did not just sit empty. They were all torn down, and the lack of housing was replaced with apartments and homes! Funny to watch this a over a year after it was published. Good work on this! It will be interesting to watch it again in a couple years.
Thanks I've got some other videos on my RUclips channel about Williston North Dakota and the great state of Mississippi feel free to check out more of them
I remember in the late '70's, a bunch of guys I knew (from eastern Ontario) went out to Alberta to work on the rigs...When it ended a few years later, they came back with a 3 or 4 year old vehicle they were still making payments on, and little else. Also, they lived like refugees when they were there.
Pretty good video makes me feel proud to be an American so many folks doing whatever it takes to provide for their families! Ive been on this current hitch for 5 months and I watch videos like this to help keep me motivated. I was able to get a beautiful place to live buy, a Car for my wife also give my kids an amazing Christmas! This spring we will be breaking ground on our new home. God bless the Oilfield and the oilfield families! Not an easy way to get what you want out of life but it is a way!!!
When it comes to your videos. Make an outline. 1 your subject 2 your statements 3 your conclusions and signoff Or how ever you put it. Make as many videos as you want until you get it the way you want it.
@@frodrickfronkensteen9241 google RV parks in williston ND and you'll have a bunch to pick from. I have a friend that is in an rv park and it's about 450- 500 month. Make sure you have a heater that works in that camper because winter is a coming. Already snowed last week. Also, SOME jobs have company housing too. Good luck.
No one could pay me enough to ever go back to ND. The Badlands are beautiful though. Being in ND really made me appreciate my state!!!! I do feel sorry for the locals, I would hate for this to come in our state, what a mess it was.
What the guy said around19:00 is the main reason I departed from North Dakota I was also 1600 miles away from my daughter who was actually a new born at the tyme and by me being a young man I got beside myself and almost made a new relationship with other women there great money involved with the gigs there in North Dakota but I had a gf aka baby mother that was a nurse making bank back home and was refusing to depart Ms to come to North Dakota which was totally understandable there was more support here not only from my family but her family as well to help keep our daughter
Tuarze Fountain What's up man you make a real good point bro people don't realize that having a support structure is a nice attribute to have up here it can help you make up that distance wear if you don't have that it can get tougher
Been there . . . however, not doing that ! Served my country, at Minot AFB, north of Williston, ND. After one quarter at North Dalota State University, in Fargo, ND . . . I headed south, to Denver, CO. After relocation to Boston, MA after 9 years in Colorado . . . I now reside, in retirement, in Washington, D.C. 😎
First off you are serving the super wealthy who have the power to tell the President what to do and then you take their orders period. They make a lot of money when war if brewing and they thin the population at the same time. In other words they tell you who to love who to hate and who to kill. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. But as long as they give you medals and say good boy. your loyalty is unfazed. So in other words you have to use violence to force people around the world to do what your rich masters want.
Hope it works out but office pushers usually don’t make it up here. Slb has always treated me good tho but it’s hard work if you are actually out there
Williston is like home. Spent 27 (1977-2004) years buying leases and minerals there (western ND and eastern MT) North Dakotans are good people. It was anything but boring. Wild stuff goes on in the oil patch, real wild.
JPtv3000 Oh, I thought you were in Williston. If you were you would know exactly what I am talking about. Plentywood and Froid, Montana. The Golden Wheel was a big illegal gambling casino back in the forties through the eighties when the FBI shut it down and Froid has a street dance every year that is like Mardi Gras.
11:06 If you are working from 8:00am until 8:00pm to 10:00 pm driving a truck,(and especially there) and are only making $50,000 a year, you are doing something wrong.....
Yep the command center job services if you looking for employment the open Monday summer is right around the corner hopefully you find something that fits you what type of work that you're interested in and the other thing that you come up here to accomplish hope everything works out
Holy crap, what a great job man. wow. Seriously this is Very professional stuff, National Geographic level production. Oh Congrats on 500,000 channel views
the man at the end of this vid, has a bit of resilience in him, a good quality to have, I hope he is still in that state of mind today, all the same stuff happened in Alaska back in the 70's, pipeline to be built, big bucks to be made, as all construction projects, it reaches a point where only a maintenance crew is needed.
You know what I love? Working myself to near exhaustion for a solid 8 hour day and then go home to my wife and kids and relax. Forget that traveling life. I love my family too much. If we have to do that someday they’ll be right by my side.
PhilJr yeah I remember my early twenties that was when I felt like that then I got older and I realize what you could do with more money and there was no going back
Bullshit. There are only a certain number of high paying jobs available, therefore anybody can't make , only the people who get their in time to fill the openings. So just because you made it does not mean there is room for all of us. Wake Up.
20:20. The saddest part of all is we can't get rid of criminals in our communities. because our communities have been made "safer" through big brother.
I've been here for almost ten years and I came here with 1200$ in my bank account. I had 1100$ worth of bills due at the end of the month. One month in.. I've never worried about money since... Hard work and using my head has gotten me to a place where I'm getting job offers for 250k-450k. I'm 30, the American dream is still very real to people who will work hard.
Hate to say it but some of these guys just made bad decisions. There’s tons of money to be made up there. I feel for the guy working three jobs.. he should go out on the rig and make 100k u can tel, he’s a good worker.
JPtv3000 right on, Ive always worked out onsite. Sand, water pcm, fr truck, frac pumps, etc. my weekly checks are equal to most ppl monthly checks. That being said some drivers I know make twice what I do. Made some good friends at Williston camp
Jon Shipley When you can make that good kind of money like that it's hard to go back to regular life. I'm on night shift with 100hrs in this week alone. How can I say no?
Does anyone know where they are going to start drilling next. I used to drive that area all the time when I had my trucking Co. I love the country. Wish I could be there working just don't have the money to go.
There was oil drilling in North Dakota in the 1980’s. They were getting a little bit of oil and they knew that there was plenty of oil there but they didn’t know how to extract it.
@18:24 those kind of people that kind of fragile needy home situation is hindrance to getting money. In the long-term those kind of wives are the ones that turn out to be problems an end of filing for divorce even though you were out there slaving to give her a better life
Idk man, I'm single and I'm 20 and I am kinda broke. Now I do hold a full time 8 hours a day, weekends off and I just love the fact I have my freedom on weekends, time off in the afternoons to hit the gym and chill afterwards. Now even tho I am not the richest, my quality of life isn't as miserable as these folk. Even tho THEY ain't broke. I think I'll keep my freedom. Thanks
I'm married and I'm 50. I'm kinda in debt. I'd like to not be and to have our house and land paid off before I'm 70 and to not depend on medicaid in my waning years. My young friend... your freedom can up and vanish like a soy-fart in the wind, but unfortunately you haven't been on the planet long enough to know that via experience. Your plans are your business. But you posted here, so I'll answer with some 30 years of hindsight on you... Stack your cash now, and when every opportunity arises and stay out of debt. Your 20. Try being 50, broke, and unemployable (for no other reason than the color of your hair and few wrinkles around your eyes). The Williston workers you say look miserable... others might say they look determined, and I couldn't help but notice... many of them looked 45+ in age. Now, what do they know that you don't, and why? Food for thought.
Its a good opportunity if making bank is your main priority and single. I worked 15 years oil and gas in Australia, made good money, made good friends. Its a hard pill to swallow if I had the option to go back and watch my kids grow up I would take it in a second.
Nice video. I was looking for updates on Williston. I watched videos years ago when the boom started. The last guy said he's an eternal optimist. I don't know if that's a good idea. I thought the economy would come back after 2008 and in my area it hasn't and I wasted so much time not reacting because I'm an eternal optimist. So now instead of making $50K a year I'm making $25K a year and blew through my savings. Don't wait around waiting for better days. Keep working and making money any way you can. Assume the worst can happen financially.
if you've worked up here or in the oilfield before. look into is your family committed cause theres a lot of options. schooling and affordable housing thats a different conversation
not reacting to what @philliesfan ? rights offers? pardon if im naive, but are u saying ppl need to sell rights in this area while they can? not sure whatcha mean, but find this video and thread- great info.
Phillies Fan yep. Blackrock is putting in 1.5 billion frac pipeline in Texas. Colorado has more oil in one deposit than Alberta CA. They keep it quiet but it's coming. Frac is expected to be as many bpd as standard production 2020 - 40 in US. Google ExxonMobil forecast 2018.
Back in 2015 i almost left my 2 dead end jobs (office complex night patrol and day time parking garage attendant) in Oregon (Tigard and Portland) to come here but after waiting to see what happened..... I'm glad i STAYED, wow i feel sad for all the men and women that had to go back home.
A younger coworker went up there about 10 years ago to do wiring of new houses and he was making a very good income. On one of his visits back here near St.Paul I asked what his thoughts were of me going up there to make more money and he suggested no. I’m glad I didn’t go because in that time my Doctor here in the Twin Cities finally figured out I have Lyme disease. Guys working in the oil fields were making at least $80,000 a year depending on how many hours they wanted to work.
@JPtv3000: Wait, YOU'RE "Jerry who lives in his van?" Gotta say man, you make it sound like you're living in your van because you have to, not because you choose to. Outstanding documentary that raises many questions, the most important one being, "What the hell's up with that salsa?" In all seriousness, my daughter graduated from film school and has made some great movies so I know how hard it was to make this. I really hope you entered this movie and your others in film festivals and are sending them to Nat Geo, Discovery Chanel and the like. You're very talented.
50,000 is unrealistically low I live in this town, was honestly surprised to run into a video about it lol. Anyways most the work here is oil related and the jobs pay well everything pays well Walmart here starts out at $17 a hour which compared to what I was making in Mississippi is a crap ton more. I work for a auto parts store in town and business is great, we do $100,000 in sales DAILY due to all the oil work here someone is always needing something and $3,000-$5,000 single ticket sales are not uncommon. It's not always a fun job (moving a pallet of Def by hand onto a trailer) but I make $21 a hour I get crazy amounts of over time weekly (they will happily give it to you) and due to over time pay I clear $70,000 a year just standing at a register in a comfortable climate control building. I'm 27 $70,000 a year at a auto parts store is excellent money and while not every job will give over time most will making a relatively good living very possible with no higher education. Even McDonald's starts out at $15 and in all honest it's nearly impossible to find a job here that pays less than $15 as Williston is kinda in the middle of no where. We have a small town (Trenton) about 15 mins away but it's literally a 1 road town so doesn't really count. Besides Trenton the closes town would be Minot (if spelt correctly) and 2.5 hours away so pretty much everyone within a 2 hour drive lives in Williston and are employees of one of the many oil fields. Due to oil fields always highering and the pay pretty much every other business in town has to pay higher than normal just to get folks to even consider filling out a application. The cost of living isn't bad at all $750 for a 2 bedroom apartment with 2 car garage utilities included. The only real downside here is winter very, very, very cold during it's peak with -30 to -40 being normal it can be a lot for folks to take in but while you still get cold you mostly get use to it rather quickly which doesn't make it feel that bad. Something I found funny when I first moved here is the say "summer is my favorite month of the year" it holds very true winter is 9 months out of the year.
Unedited Gamer this makes me happy and sad. Cool your banking fat stacks I worked for auto parts store in The 90s made about $250 bucks a week :( life sucked.
The rancher at 27:00 that is pissed because his house doesn’t have a view anymore either: Sold off the mineral rights a long time ago for not much money Or Bought the house/property knowing the mineral rights had already been sold and could be extracted at anytime.
Damn Jerry, Bio doesn't make your hand swell. If anything it will turn your hand brown for about a day. I know from experience of 8 years of messing with it.
Ken Carpenter I've heard a lot of different things from a lot of different people at this point I just look up whatever the best money rotation and benefits are
In the 1980's a large company came in and bought 80% o the mineral rights from the farmers cause of hard times...now that company is reaping the benefits..
Ronnie Sorters that is absolutely not true and there's public records to back that up. I manage over $70million annually of royalties and that go directly to private mineral owners of ND minerals.
Explosive Enterprises that’s great. You set up tax payments for the royalties? I ask because I have land geologists are interested in. It’s a crap shoot but trying to thing about long term planning if there is an oil discovery.
I've lived here in Williston all my life and no it's not really booming anymore. My nephew moved back here about two months ago and he's been applying for jobs in the oilfield and he's gotten a couple of offers but they didn't pay very well. Other than that if u move here be ready for cold, this last week it's been down down to -20F, had to push our flatbed truck into our heated garage to get it to start. Oh according to our governor there r plenty of jobs to b had.

First off you are serving the super wealthy who have the power to tell the President what to do and then you take their orders period. They make a lot of money when war if brewing and they thin the population at the same time. In other words they tell you who to love who to hate and who to kill.
This suffering looks to me like last chance for guys over 50 to make some money

Its a good opportunity if making bank is your main priority and single. I worked 15 years oil and gas in Australia, made good money, made good friends. Its a hard pill to swallow if I had the option to go back and watch my kids grow up I would take it in a second.

Thanks for sharing. I am confused about the homeowner complaining about having to lease his mineral rights to the oil company. Could he have said no?
Not unless he wanted to end up in a body bag.
He probably bought or inhereted the land and the rights were previously sold. So he probably didnt sell them off nor have a say

50000 working 12 hours a day in ND? Not a good deal.
Sometimes the struggle is worth the payout to some.
I agree. I feel like with his cdl he should easily be able to make that back home.
12 hour days ain't nothing! I work 14 - 16 hrs every day and love every minute of it!

If you buy land, BUY THE MINERAL RIGHTS!
That's a good tip and all but in ND NOONE SELLS THE MINERAL RIGHTS
In the 1980's a large company came in and bought 80% o the mineral rights from the farmers cause of hard times...now that company is reaping the benefits..
Ronnie Sorters that is absolutely not true and there's public records to back that up. I manage over $70million annually of royalties and that go directly to private mineral owners of ND minerals.
It's hard enough to buy the mineral rights in many areas - much less somewhere like ND or West Texas.
Explosive Enterprises that’s great. You set up tax payments for the royalties? I ask because I have land geologists are interested in. It’s a crap shoot but trying to thing about long term planning if there is an oil discovery.
