I think this is one of my favorites campaigns ever done by viper, this campaign is complete, a death hero, a deer attacking his outpost, lots of Oh no, hilarious reactions 11
Great playtrough as always. This one has always been a very memorable sceniario for me because of how well made it is. I guess the same can be said with most of the other Battles of the Conquerors sceniarios, they're all great! An interesting thing about the deer is that they're not really supposed to attack the outpost. Since the trigger that makes Ornlu attack the outpost is an *area* trigger, it makes any gaia units in the said area attack the outpost, including deer of course. Theoretically you could make every deer in the island attack the outpost by just "luring" them to this area. Someone else also mentioned that the attacking sprite of the deer is just the gazelle from aoe1, which further indicates that the attacking deer is a bug, since it seems like a placeholder sprite. That said though, I've always thought that the attacking deer, Ornlu howling, and the superstrong wolf was a fantastic way to set up the tone for the sceniario. Norway was (and probably still is) such an hardass place in the winter, that even the deer hate your guts. All this in addition to the "dragon of the sea which kills you" reveal when you defeat Greenland makes this sceniario exceptional when it comes down to atmosphere. And in order to address the elephant in the room, I love how you say that the worm is a Viper, as it makes you (metaphorically speaking) directly responsible for the death of your one and only hero, Erik the red. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
This was such a wonderful historic mission - so beautifully recreated here in AOE 2. I mean i really was compelled to read about The Vinland Sagas having now known anything about it. That is what AOE 2 campaigns are all about. Recreating and enacting scenes from history. The sagas report that a considerable number of Vikings were in parties that visited Vinland - which is essentially northern Newfoundland - modern Canada. Essentially in this scenario, you boom, visit England pillage them, visit Greenland - destroy them and then take your Viking explorers to the new world. You are in the new world five centuries before the voyages of Christopher Columbus and John Cabot! You encounter some locals who you kill and establish the first European colony in the Americas. Some cool aspects of the scenario - You can get a Penguin unit (yes! a frigging Penguin!) as an Easter egg by visiting the northeastern part of Greenland in the map behind a pile of rocks and a forest. This will unlock the achievement "Eternal Gratitude". - Once Greenland is defeated, they would immediately ally with you, showing the "Sea of Worms" - a huge area of sea where ships that sailed in those waters did not return! How spooky! Test it out! Take some ships and see them instantly sink! - At the southernmost point on the map just before the sea of worms, there is a Skraeling Woad Raider Unit named "Bert" after Forgotten Empires developer Bert Beeckman! - Skraelings are now represented by a unique civilization of the same name. Just amazing. This one.
This is a very interesting scenario. With some unusual stuff (very low ressources, need to raid, large map, not really knowing what to expect, somewhat vague instructions with hints conveyed through ingame dialogue) they really nail that exploring vibe.
+dubistrann Yeah, essentially a bug. The trigger is meant to make Ornlu attack the outpost, but if a deer walks into the vicinity where Ornlu is tasked to attack it will also attack.
The gazelle transformation is a left over from AoE1. In AoE1 there was a cheat code which would let you control the animals, and you could attack with them, meaning that every animal had an attack animation. Since AoE2 is an upgrade version of the AoE1 Genie Engine, the deers is just reskinned gazelles. But thinking that a deer attack animation would never be needed, the designers didn't bother to reskin the gazelle attack animation when making AoE2.
There is a trigger that makes the deer attack (the text was somehow missing) but if you look closely the deers attacking animation is actually just a deer from AoE 1!
Really nice episode. The battles of the Conquerors are quite enjoyable, happy to see you like playing them! From what my Icelandic friends told me, apparently Erik the Red was the first to discover Greenland. He or his father was banned from Norway for manslaughter and they moved to Iceland. Erik the Red went on to discover Greenland and his son Leif later set foot in America (the settlement called Vinland).
"Erik the Red" is known as Eirik Raude and not really that known in Norway. He is probably more well known on Iceland and Greenland though. He was banished from Norway due to political affiliations and settled on Greenland. It was his son, Leiv Eriksson that is both more well known today and the first one to actually sail to America from norse lands intentionally. It is rumored that he heard about a land west of Greenland from someone who missed Greenland (miss the course by one degree south when setting off from Iceland and you can't see Greenland over the horizon as you pass) and kept sailing west.
Erik Thorvaldsson (Old Norse: Eiríkr Þorvaldsson; 950 - c. 1003), known as Erik the Red (Old Norse: Eiríkr hinn rauði) was a Norwegian Viking, remembered in medieval and Icelandic saga sources as having founded the first Norse settlement in Greenland. The Icelandic tradition indicates that he was born in the Jæren district of Rogaland, Norway, as the son of Þorvald Ásvaldsson, he therefore also appears, patronymically, as Erik Thorvaldsson (Eiríkr Þorvaldsson). The appellation "the Red" most likely refers to his hair color and the color of his beard. Leif Erikson, the famous Icelandic explorer, was Erik's son.
For anyone wondering... The Deer does that because of a trigger fuck up. When you place a Blacksmith, Ornlu the Wolf is programmed to show up and attack your outpost. The problem is, they made the trigger kinda shitty; so it makes any units (that includes deer) that wander in to it attack your outpost... *EDIT:* I should also mention, when deer attack, their sprite turns into the Gazelle from Age of Empires 1. That's all folks. Good video as always BTW.
Oh the Sea Of worms. I recall now the times of my youth when I played this scenario. I sent out Erik The Red in a transport and it sunk when it reached the Sea Of Worms :( Such a great scenario :)
Fan Fact: The sea-worm on land bug is now on AoK wiki page. Let’s all thanks theViper made such sacrifice using his countryman to explored this bug out for us. 11
deer was attacking cos the trigger that made the wolves attack somehow triggered the deer to atk aswell, and combined with the bug where units with no atk can deal 1 dmg at a very slow rate, it happened edit: Erik the Rekt 20:14
It all comes to full circle now. The Sea of Worms is the personification of Biper. Of course Erik doesn't stand a chance against our history-killing snake.
Wasn't it Leif Erikson that founded the Vinland colony? (It's been years since I read anything about it so it's all a bit fuzzy). Erik and his son were originally from Norway, but they actually settled on Greenland. Might be the reason you don't know all that much about it.
The consensus at the moment is that the vikings actually did colonize america and that Erik and Leif did manage to go to Vinland: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norse_colonization_of_North_America
Yeah, Erik the Red colonized Greenland and his son Leif Erikson was the major person in founding the ill fated Vinland Colony, now called L'anse Aux Meadow in Newfoundland.
the thing attacking your outposts wasn't the deer it was "GAIA", I think it's meant to represent the harsh weather so your buildings just periodically take damage even though nothing is attacking them
One thing I hate about the Vikings in AoE2 is WHY on the bloody hell do you have to make transports? When Longships WERE exactly that!? Transportships! The Vikings didn't wage naval warfare So couldn't the develooers removed transports and just programmed the spritea with the same specs as transports? Or am I completely wrong here?
once i got used to the speed it was okay.....what ever the decision, normal or fast is fine by me. i do like to study the moves a little, but majority rules.
First time I played this scenario I lost it the exact same way! Also the deer attacking the outpost is due to a bug. There is an area with a trigger set up to cause the wolf, that spawns later, to attack the outpost. The same trigger is active before the wolf spawns and causes any deer who wanders over the area to attack the outpost too. And since one of the deers are close to the area when the map is started, there is a high chance it will wander over it. It does however not happen every game but quite often.
i think speed upp maybe in dark and feudal, thats my opinion for the straw pull.. but i did pray for u to not walk the bottom of england, i did it myself when i played it, it was such a relatable pain, i dont judge u this time viper, #prayforviper Also.. props for finding lonely hermit after the end of the map, im so proud!
Hahah when I was like 9 playing this scenario I didn’t understand the dragon thing in the middle of the Ocean sank your ships so I would send things or look away and they would be gone and I was so frustrated and confused.
20:14 The moment we were all waiting for
The Sea Worm took care of Erik! But that worm was nothing but a Viper in disguise!
AWKWARD SILENCE AF!
Indeed!!
Thomas Vrielink hahaha, yep :p
Thomas Vrielink I love your profile picture
*gets 5 feet off the coast of Norway*
"Is this the New World?"
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norway
ironically, the viper actually is from norway 😂
"Wonder if Erik is good enough to take on Ornlu."
Here we go again...
I've tried it didn't work.
Fast Speed and 56 min, whats going on here?
"Erik the Red must survive"
welllll....
my thoughts exactly :D
Leon Thomes haha yes
facebook.com/nt.thanhvu/
the reaction when viper sees the deer attacking was epic
that was literally what i was like when i played this the first time
I was so much looking forward to that moment
Yes imagine it, he has been playing like 10 years or more, and seeing something so inusual, must be a little scary for him 11
Type "natural wonders" in game.
That's probably an easter egg or a reference of the 1st AoE because they look the same when they attack.
I think this is one of my favorites campaigns ever done by viper, this campaign is complete, a death hero, a deer attacking his outpost, lots of Oh no, hilarious reactions 11
Jung Hee Lee plus the fact it's his homeland
48:59 of course it's a viper, it killed a hero
Satrancci
this comment is underappreciated.
nice one
up you go
lmao
*"A hero has fallen..."*

But during the age of the vikings it was much warmer around the world so the winters wernt as harsh as they make it out in this game

Biper I thought you would at least spare the Norwegian hero.
It appears your scythe is swift and merciless.
I like how you used the word "scythe" and made Viper seem like the grim reaper of AOE2 heroes xD
Wherever Viper goes, Ornlu the wolf follows.
First Mongolia, then Mexico and now Norway.
#InternationalWolf #T90 woowoo
Le Sanzo That was his intention.
what about mexico?
7:30 priceless... I mean, you live in Norway and your house was never attacked by deer?
"Erik the Red must survive" LUL mission failed... we'll get em next time
nice cod memes
well meme'd my friend
there are some mean deer in Norway
If Ornlu the wolf can attack buildings...why not
I know, a Møøse once bit my sister.
Ornlu the deer, the revenge of the fallen
7:23
20:14 I almost screamed out loud. Also I love the sound scorpion makes when it dies *CCRUNCH*
This is a very interesting scenario. With some unusual stuff (very low ressources, need to raid, large map, not really knowing what to expect, somewhat vague instructions with hints conveyed through ingame dialogue) they really nail that exploring vibe.
True that
Erik vs Ornlu... the true defintion of instant regret
20:21 TRIGGERED *Viper having Joan of Arc flashbacks*
You know what would have been hilarious? If Viper first lost Erik to Ornlu, then restarted and lost him again to the Sea of WOrms. :D
Lol! His reaction would be priceless
The Deer attacking the outpost always happens.
Sometimes it's the deer, other times from what I've experienced Ornlu the Wolf shows up and attacks the Outpost instead.
It makes sense. Set area - task object - gaia - attack outpost. They should have made the trigger activated only after Ornlu is spawned though.
Chitturi
Ornlus spawn is triggered when a blacksmith is built.
did you know the deer that attack the buildings briefly turn into a gazelle from aoe1 while attacking
Do you know if its a bug? Or a little AoE1 easter egg by the devs?
dubistdrann kind of both at the time, the deer attacking is a bug but it's not a bug that deer have the gazelle graphics when attacking
+dubistrann Yeah, essentially a bug. The trigger is meant to make Ornlu attack the outpost, but if a deer walks into the vicinity where Ornlu is tasked to attack it will also attack.

26:03 the deer runs from the other side of norway to attack the outpost though. It doesn't look like a bug to me.
I prefer normal speed, maybe with a speedup during economy buildup and other action less periods.
it's called normal for some reason, people thinks it makes game easier but it's them who make their game harder by increasing the speed lol
7:29 Oh deer...
51:38 Viper just pulled a Hernan Cortes
20:30 The silence is deafening here. Legendary stuff 🤣
Hahaha! It's incredible how you make these vids so entertaining! The most mundane stuff becomes hillarious
48:55 '' I see it, it is a Viper! "
LOL
will somebody make a hero death compilation at some point?
How about you do it?
i was like how the fuck is this video one hour long
especially if he is playing on fast
then the sea of worms happened
just do adjustable, speed up when neccessary and slow down if neccessary.
Best of both worlds. could be nice if he just speeds up to build up the base and than slow down as he moves out to explore.
I agree
fast speed is unneccesary. I want to watch viper be chilling
why dont you abuse the markets, the one that gives 600 just trade with it overtime you get more then 600 gold.
population space. island is too small so he would need a lot of carts to make it profitable
There is a trigger that makes the deer attack (the text was somehow missing) but if you look closely the deers attacking animation is actually just a deer from AoE 1!

Erik the Red went on to discover Greenland and his son Leif later set foot in America (the settlement called Vinland).
I was waiting for u to ship Eric the Red in a transport into the deadzone =D. Anyone else?
great going TheViper. i wanted to see your face when you lost Eric!!!
Happened to every AOE2 player ever who played this Campaign.

You can put whatever speed you want Viper, you are still going to lose the heroes...
LOL!! Joan of Arc send her regrets.
I like to see normal speed. you can speed up the vid for boring parts but remain at normal speed
The Viper done in by some measly worms. Rip Erik
8:20 WAIT
The deer is angry you killed its fellow kind. IT'S COMING RIGHT NOW TO ATTACK YOUR VILLAGE!
40:17 Viper made a dock right where enemy transport ships were going to land
I inmediatelly clicked the video with High expectetions on wich reaction would have Viper when..... *HE SEES DEER ATTACKING HIM!*
Just opened up the video, noticed it's 56 minutes long. I already know this will be comedy gold.

viper it doesnt matter what speed you go at, i can never keep up anyway 11, you are too quick! xD
That's what she said.
better too quick than not at all ;P
Michael Taylor
Dude its a bit too far
I'm already looking forward to Kyoto...
For anyone wondering...

Such a great scenario :)
Lonely Hermit easter egg is cool.
Normal speed = longer videos = more viper for us, so why should I watch first to know my answer? :D
but honestly this campaign is too long for what it's worth
Yeah normal speed is better, however I do like to play longer campaigns on fast myself, but seeing you micro everything works better in normal speed.
Sinking his own transport ship....like Cortez
Fan Fact: The sea-worm on land bug is now on AoK wiki page. Let’s all thanks theViper made such sacrifice using his countryman to explored this bug out for us. 11
fast speed and 1h? WAT?
Peter Bočan around 20:50 min elegiggle
Yes, that explained it :D
well... it involves a hero...
Knock knock
Who's there?
Erik
Erik who?
Erik th.... oh nevermind he's dead
Erik the Dead, you mean?
17:14 Siege rams in Castle Age. Good luck!
20:11 Man I've never laughed that hard. "What?! Run run run run run!"
deer was attacking cos the trigger that made the wolves attack somehow triggered the deer to atk aswell, and combined with the bug where units with no atk can deal 1 dmg at a very slow rate, it happened
edit: Erik the Rekt 20:14
20:37 The moment of Silence..
The Viper retracing his roots. Odin never told him about the hostile deer
I like normal because i get to listen to the Viper talk more and I really like this content.
It all comes to full circle now. The Sea of Worms is the personification of Biper. Of course Erik doesn't stand a chance against our history-killing snake.
8:24 Meanwhile in Norway...
Well he's Norwegian so yeah!
20:18 The speechless Viper. I can totally relate to how discouraging these missions sometimes are. Not saving is a form of masochism.
Remember: you can't "sacrifice" Erik here because then YOU LOSE!
The best part in this episode is Viper's reaction in deer attacking.
He was so damn pissed he didn't even realised the snake drawing in the sea lol
That fucking all devouring sea always creeped me out.
20:00 that was unexpected
you mean that was highly expected and anticipated right?
Mateus Cavanholi finally someone that understands irony, you sir deserve not one but two cookies

THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, or should I say THE SILENCE OF THE DEER!
26:03, these deers really don't like the outposts, are they?
Glad to play the story of an illustrious compatriot Viper?
Yes, Christopher Columbus was just a small player with bigger boats and smaller balls!
Wasn't it Leif Erikson that founded the Vinland colony? (It's been years since I read anything about it so it's all a bit fuzzy). Erik and his son were originally from Norway, but they actually settled on Greenland. Might be the reason you don't know all that much about it.
caphalor08 yeah this is not really historicly accurate
The consensus at the moment is that the vikings actually did colonize america and that Erik and Leif did manage to go to Vinland: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norse_colonization_of_North_America
Yeah, Erik the Red colonized Greenland and his son Leif Erikson was the major person in founding the ill fated Vinland Colony, now called L'anse Aux Meadow in Newfoundland.
caphalor08 Yeah, I was thinking it was Lief Erikson.
Gotta love the muted mic after the catastrophe. Vote for normal speed.
Whenever he clicks on a unit, all I hear is "Ladida!" "La dee daa!"
20:32
There is a dragon in the water on the minimap?
That's a nice detail
I remember when I first saw the deer attacking my outpost, I was confused as f. It was almost 15 years ago. Good Times.
Best Viper campaign video to date!
Well, I did expect Erik the red to have an unfortunate transport accident.
I realized that there will be lots of fun when I saw the duration of the video 11
the thing attacking your outposts wasn't the deer it was "GAIA", I think it's meant to represent the harsh weather so your buildings just periodically take damage even though nothing is attacking them
One thing I hate about the Vikings in AoE2 is WHY on the bloody hell do you have to make transports? When Longships WERE exactly that!? Transportships! once i got used to the speed it was okay.....what ever the decision, normal or fast is fine by me. i do like to study the moves a little, but majority rules.
Play normal speed!!!
If you want faster you can speed up video by clicking settings button.
Theviper: "Erik the Red must survive."

20:20 There goes an awkward silence
Jesus that death water rocked my world as a kid. Cruisin through another campaign on standard and then my whole army is gone.
viper the 1000 year old descendant of eric the red ready to play the game for a second round
Viper I understand you losing Erik this time but I will never forgive you for Charles Martel!!!
Dat Lonely Hermit
First time I played this scenario I lost it the exact same way!

And since one of the deers are close to the area when the map is started, there is a high chance it will wander over it. It does however not happen every game but quite often.
Normal speed for a majority, fast during the build up or when nothing otherwise is happening
i think speed upp maybe in dark and feudal, thats my opinion for the straw pull..
but i did pray for u to not walk the bottom of england, i did it myself when i played it, it was such a relatable pain, i dont judge u this time viper, #prayforviper
Also.. props for finding lonely hermit after the end of the map, im so proud!
31:34 why does this happen? I’m still confused on why this are you lose your army and villagers?
20:02 - Literally went full titanic right there. 11
scenario is in norway and the map is filled with snow... sounds about right
There is no reason to do speed up for the vids. You can either skip the parts you find boring or select the speed yourself on the video.
of course, if viper is kinda bored, then of course he is allowed, haha
7:50 Viper confused and SCARED by a deer.
Hahah when I was like 9 playing this scenario I didn’t understand the dragon thing in the middle of the Ocean sank your ships so I would send things or look away and they would be gone and I was so frustrated and confused.
World explorers always make it seem so difficult. You could have skipped a rock to Norway in this mission.
56:14 yea, me too! The most famos viking is Wicki as far as i know! Not sure if you call them Wicki too! :)
Does anyone know why the deer attacks at 7:36?
