Hey everyone 😊 Appreciate that this a pretty epic interview, but viewable in bite-sizes of course or several sittings - trust me when I say every minute of this is worthwhile. From Wildlife Gardening to Rock Music, to Chelsea Flower Show, to Chris’s own garden, to Environmental Campaigning and, above all what YOU can do best to help wildlife not only in your own garden, but further afield too - best wishes to you all - Joel 😊

Watched and listened from start to finish Joel. I rarely use the words "epic" or "hero" and do not recollect ever using them both in the same sentence or paragraph but both words apply in this case. This interview with Chris is epic in every sense of the word, you are quite right, and testament to the fact that not all heroes wear capes (I don't think that Chris owns one 👀🤔) but my longstanding hero as covered in this interview wrote a book titled "How to Make a Wildlife Garden" that was purchased for me by my parents after I pestered them (got to get the latest edition) to buy it for me and let me make our childhood garden more wildlife friendly. When I read the words "wildlife service station" and understood the logic behind it, it resonated with me instantly as it perfectly described what I wanted to create and maintain with all features and plants needing to pay their rent. Shortly after receiving the book the adjustments began and a wildlife garden was born with wildlife soon beginning to grace it with its presence. I am looking at the book now on my bookshelf and have to pinch myself to remind me that I have met the author, a true hero of mine and wandered around in his magnificent wildlife garden in semi-urban Wolverhampton before sitting down to watch and listen intently whilst you Joel, now another hero of mine and capeless (a wildlife hero of mine interviewing another) interviewed Chris whilst trying to keep your cool and not get flustered 😅. You did magnificently... as cool as a cucumber in fact 😎🥒😂. The smile never left my face on the way home and it is a stellar day that I will never forget, that of course, included meeting you and the lovely Nikki the evening before 😊. Thank you very much for the generosity of your invite and including me in the credits at the end. I did not expect that. So wonderful listening to this great man talking of his childhood and when the first wild seeds are sewn that set him on his life path. You don't look uncomfortable at all and have so many similar memories to share which I'm sure he enjoyed hearing as much as I did. The first jar of tadpoles, bird watching and the wonder of wild flowers. I'm sure other viewers have had exactly the same experiences and that's why we want to make a difference and why we care about our surroundings. Looking forward to some more tomorrow! Great job!

Towards the end of the video it really does hit home that we have to do what we can with our own green spaces and help in the wider countryside too. Thanks so much, as always, for your support and encouragement, I certainly was nervous and it was one of the hottest days but I could have sat there talking for the whole day, believe me! Wide awake here Chris. Thoroughly enjoyed Joel and thank you for delivering such a great video. Really interesting lots of great in-site of course from such an advocate of nature. He summed it up for me when he talked about the 70 yrs of depletion of land for wildlife, be it mass agricultural land being baron of wildlife or brownfield sites disappearing. Being in my 60’s this is what I have witnessed too. I’ve witnessed small pockets of urban brownfield sites disappearing fast around me, living in the black country these were my haunts as I roamed as a child, were I caught insects, tadpoles, frogs, toads, newts. Picked wildflowers, blackberries and generally developed my fascination of wildlife. I fear that’s gone and can’t be brought back but, I’m also aware that in the bigger picture more people are becoming aware of what is happening. Most days I read of some positive news of someone developing their farm or land over to wildlife. Just recently a piece of land along our local canal has been planted as an orchard with a wildflower undercover and a local park as opened a stream that was underground to enable a wetland to form with a boardwalk and selective marsh loving plants planted. Chris is right it’s the younger generation that hopefully will begin to develop the corridors needed to help the migration of insects, mammals and birds around the country opening up isolated oasis’s. As a member of Birmingham and Black Country alongside Worcestershire WLT. I’m pleased to see that this is the way they’re going. Buying up, where possible, adjoining land to develop corridors for wildlife. At the same time providing school programmes to help inspire young people into action. Can’t wait for Brett too! now there’s a fountain of knowledge.

I watched this in one piece. And must say a massive thank you to you both. The information, background and future was amazing to hear.
I grew up with an empty concrete balcony we never used. When councils filled in Victorian parks and laid grass. Taking down a greenhouse I would visit and filled in a Victorian sunken garden. It took a long time till I had my own space, but I'm still learning. And this year I'll finally have my own pond.
Once again thanks for an inspiring interview.

I wanted to ensure he was recognised for everything he has campaigned for and encouraged in others, particularly the wildlife gardening of course. Not sure if you have seen already but there is a 3 part series on the channel of how I make the ponds - but this short video shows just a few of the many made over the last 18 years and how beautiful a wildlife pond can look:

Thank you for an informal and interesting conversation.
I have tried to incorporate all the aspects featured in Chris's books in my garden,
I am lucky to have a seven acre wood next door, and lots of established trees in the garden, which I am under-planting.
When I am working in the veg section of the garden, I absolutely love stopping and listening to red kites, watching the bees, and shooing squirrels off the hazel nuts. Keep at it Joel

Another great interview Joel. I watched it in one sitting. Such an inspiration, and makes me want to further improve my garden for wildlife. I remember him on Pebble Mill all those years ago. I must look out for those children’s books for the grandchildren (and their parents), we are after all custodians for our time here and the next generation need to be on board too. I’ll probably watch this interview a few times. Regards Keith

Time flies with this interview doesn't it Keith, I couldn't possibly have edited anything out for sure :) Chris has, and continues to be, such a wonderful influence on so many people. The books on the table were all from mine and Nikki's collection, the children's books she had had for many years and I think Chris was quite surprised when I placed them on the table :) What a wonderful man, and when I get a chance I am going to watch the whole video, I have only seen it through when adding the additional footage so am looking forward to the weekend! Best wishes, and thank you - Joel

This interview should be shown on terrestrial tv after gardeners world to get people to understand that manicured gardens isn’t good for nature. Basically what we need to do is leave the lawnmower in the shed.

Joel, I've been planning a fairly decent sized pond for months, then my man and I decided we really wanted a bridge, so to make a long story short we've dug out a 16m by 11 m pond. With a naarrow part in the middle for the bridge lol. Its lined, with the under liner and the pvc liner is lying beside it ready to go on but I don't know where to start. Will we start at the edge and roll it out or will we put in in the middle and roll it out from there? I've more fleece for the top, obviously that part was easy but now I'm a bit stuck. Maybe someone did this? Anybody?

Hi Mollie - I am not sure if you have seen the rest of my channel yet but there are a few videos that should help you, this is part 1 of a 3 part series that shows how I make the ponds and you'll see me rolling out the liner - it's the same whatever size pond you make:
      ruclips.net/video/lKrjMv6TMlU/видео.html
This video shows a larger pond liner being rolled out:

@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton Thanks, I have been watching your vids and I was chatting to you about the pond a while back. Though I was planning 4 or 5 meters. Not 18 x 10. I followed to the letter so far ;). Just when the liner was delivered and we couldn't even lift it, I had a little panic lol. It's huge. We're going to use the tractor and see if we can roll it down from the side. I'll post a pic to the website. And, thank you for the vids, I wouldn't have started without them.
