Did you add any allowance for the zipper? I also noticed you didn't finish explaining the waist on the back pattern. I think you mentioned that the curve cut on the front had t also be added to the back. I am short 4'11 (my hip is 56 inches). 36 inches is in the back from hip to hip, the other 20 is in the front. Is adding and subtracting 1 inch enough? I feel like I should be borrowing more from the front and adding to the back. What do you recommend?
@@bombcherryjuice2000 hello and apologies for my late response and thank you for watching my video. First of all for the zipper, you have to add your zipper allowance and all other necessary allowances. If you watch the part 2 of this video, you will find that there. For the front curve, I meant that atimes when you go down 1.5” and curve for the front, it could give some excess at the whole waist, you will need to check that when taking the total waist measurements before you shape it at the sides. For the allocation of hip…. You can take a tape, or ask someone to help you out and measure your hip front from side to side and also the hip back from side to side and you will know the difference and use that to calculate ( which here you said back is 36 and front is 20) if using that, then you won’t have to add the 1” thing I did to the back, you will rather draft the front pattern using 20 divided by 2 = 10 Back pattern using 36 divided by 2 = 18” and if you don’t…… then you use 56 divided by 2 = 28 Then Hip front is 28 - 1 = 27” Hip back is 28 + 1 = 29” And you can also use 1.5” to do the calculation as well. If you would like us to do this together then you can get to me on the school WhatsApp number and we can do video calls and take the measurements together.
Hey .. great job I'm a upcoming design in Rural area I love how u educate 🤝I I hv been using the same method but mostly when I'm reducing or doing alteration Thank u such a good inspiration
Hello, the one and half inches I took aways helps my skirt not have folds at the front but please note it's according to body size and you can take from half, one to one and half.
You are simply amazing maam. Just stumbled on this. I want to ask....if the client i am making the skirt for is not around....what height should i use....for the bum crack. You used 16 for your own, measuring from the waist. If the client is not around, what can i use?. Thank you ma
@@bukolaokunola-ws9sx Thank you for watching my video 🙏…. You see this butt crack, I don’t advise guess work because it may fail. It’s best to ask for a measurement. I used my measurement I took on myself for the butt crack because everyone has a different butt look which affects the measurement.
Okay…. I will work on the video but let’s establish which of the mermaid skirts! The type you attach above the knee or the type that is cut together? Do let me know. Thank you 🙏
Fantastic illustrations. Thanks. Please how do you add zipper to the back? And is this suitable for pencil skirts? What more do we need to the helm to make it pencilled? Thanks ma'am
Hello and thank you. This pattern is already for a pencil skirt except you want it more penciled then you take off something more at the hemline. Now to add zip, you just follow the back seam the way it's shaped and add your zipper following the shape. I think part 2 of that video may guide you on that.
Thank you so much 🙏 Pls do check the …video 2 ( hip allocation method) as I had shown how to add the zip allowance and sew it as well. Here is the link 👇👇 ruclips.net/video/oLS48WRpAx0/видео.html
Thank you so much 🙏 and yes you can do that and also decide not to. But for a start if you want to try it out, remove 1” before joint to the top part ……It will still give you a perfect fit at the front .
Hello ma’am…Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us ❤️God bless you ma’am…please ma’am i want to ask if we want to use dis method to make a mermaid skirt, from which point are we going to create d mermaid tail on the back bodice? Is it from the bum curve or from the knee point maam? Will appreciate your response ma’am ❤️
Thank you so much for watching my videos 🙏 for a mermaid skirt extension, depending on the height or by choice, you can start at 15” or 17” or 18” …. Pls note this measurement you will take from the skirt waist down to get the length I mentioned.
Please ma after the whole drafting and butt allocation, we should go ahead and input our sewing allowance for front and zipper allowance for the back following the curve at the back right?
Please ma can you upload the sewing version of this And what about adding seam allowance? While recreating this for myself, please do I still have to add the zip effect around the at the back for the zipper?
So at the bum area if you follow how I drafted the pattern, the only thing you have to do will be to add your allowance to follow the curve of the back(where your zip is) the cutting part should be in the sewing video which I sent a link, it will make it clearer.
@@MAKADELFashionSchool okay thank you ma I followed this process but it looks spiky at the bum region Like that bum curve was looking funny! 🤦♀️ Please what could have been the cause of this and please how do I fix this??
@@happinessamarachi4807 that’s because you came out much at the bum area. Like I said in the video, the downside of this method is just that experience you have had if the bum area is too rounded. So if you had like 1.5” left to add to the bum area to complete your measurements, rather use 3/4” which is less than 1” and share the remaining to the sides of the skirt and this will sort out that issue please.
Thanks for the video ma'am. But my concern is after cutting, because of the difference in hip measurement, (that is subtracting 1inc from the front and adding to the back), the back bodice was wider than the front bodice on the hip area. So how does one join the back and front together?
I really wish I could do a voice over to explain to you better. If you take a tape and measure your front (from side to side at your hip region) it will be definitely less than the back because of your bum at your back. So if you have 19 in front, you may have 20 or more at the back. Having said this, if you make your pattern and cut, the back skirt may be bigger than the front, don’t panic. Pls join it together first and wear it and see if it fits or not. That’s why I recommend you take a calico(muslin) or any cheap fabric and make a prototype (mockup) cut it and see fully, then let’s see the outcome first. You can also chat me up on the school WhatsApp number 08037134216 if you still don’t get it and pls let me know you are from here and it’s about the Skirt.
Also, i observed that you used the same knee measurement at the front for the back knee. You used 11.75 minus 1.5 to get the knee round at the front. Which you also used for the back. I was thinking you were supposed to use 12.75 minus 1.5 for the back knee all the way down. I am confused. Kindly put me through ma. Thank you.
@@bukolaokunola-ws9sx hello …. Please don’t be confused. Use this simple method…. Whatever you have on your hip, please minus 1.5” and use for the knee, that’s all. You can minus from as small 3/4” to as much as 2” for the knee all depending on how pencil you client wants the knee area.
If you follow the video….. I believe you will decide what you want for your zip allowance. Zip allowances can be from half an inch to one and a half inch.
You are welcome . Can’t remember if mine has a zipper but ……if you want to add one, pls at the center back….. add 1” extra to accommodate your zipper please.

Very insightful video, thank you so much But as a beginner, there’s this confusion I’ve not been able to resolve When I’m making a dress and the half length is two inches above the navel, is it ok to still leave my waist to hip measurement at 9 or should it be 11 ?
Thank you 🙏 your half length being 2” above your navel does not make the hip depth(waist to hip ) to have a constant number. From my own experience over the years, I still take a measurement of my waist to hip. Now to help you and professionally, you should tie a light rope at you clients waist level where you have determined to be the half length ( a trick I use atimes is ask your client to bend her elbow, now where that cut of the elbow is aligned to your waist is your half length, tie a robe here or use as elbow is bending, place a tape from that point downward to the part of the hip that starts protruding and that is your hip depth. Some people from the waist especially slim ones, can be 7” or 8” and others can go from 8”, 9” to 11” for those with lower hip level. So for me I don’t have a particular number for waist to hip like if the hip is 45, use 9” I don’t do that because it doesn’t work for me. I take the proper measurement to determine the number.
