    To me, this is one of the underrated NBA playoff upsets.

    This was a very good Nets team. Birdsong and Richardson were a terrific backcourt...one of the best in the league. Buck Williams was one of the top power forwards in the NBA at that time. He was great with the Nets. Dawkins had his best year of his career averaging around 17 a game. Albert King (younger brother of Bernard) was a guy who could score in bunches. Great team victory beating the defending champs and winning all three on the road. Nets lost in the next round to a very good Bucks team in a hard fought 6 game series.

    One of the biggest playoff upsets in NBA history, and it's hardly ever talked about. This 76ers team literally almost sweeped through the entire playoffs in route to an NBA championship the year before. It's a shame that Michael Ray was kicked out of the league 2 years after this. He very well would be in the hall of fame had he kept himself clean.

      yep I watched it as it happened, Michael Ray was the driving force, he set the pace , he made the difference. That was a VERY athletically explosive Net team. Buck Williams, Albert King, Dawkins with Sugar Ray and Birdsong in the backcourt, they were hungry, fast and young and Prime Sugar Ray was just one hell of a force.

    As a Nets fan since they were still in New York, this is still my favorite memory of the team even with them reaching the Finals in 2002 and 2003. Very fun team to watch and Dawkins said in his book what a great coach Albeck was to play for. Birdsong thought this team matched up well with those 2002/2003 Nets that reached the finals. Would've been extremely fun to see Richardson and Kidd go head to head.

    This is the biggest playoff upset in history...even bigger than Mavericks-Warriors 2007 because the Sixers had Dr. J and Moses Malone...

    I remember as a 13 year old listening to the games on a transistor radio under the covers when I was supposed to be sleeping....I yelled out when Nets won game 5. Michael Ray was huge, and Buck Williams had his way with Iavaroni. Darryl Dawkins did admirably against Moses. 76's also weren't the same team as year before - Toney was already slowing down and Moses played through injuries. Still - a HUGE upset.

    Difference in that series was Andrew Toney. He average barely 20 points a game but that was way below his average playoff performance totals in 83 and 82. He looked more like a point guard from this point forward than a shooting guard. Moving the ball up court looking to pass rather than pull up and shoot. Without those 30 plus points a game from Toney they had diminished outlook for victory moving forward and never repeated.

    • @tonygajate5780
      @tonygajate5780 2 года назад +1

      Nope, wrong reason. The Nets were hungrier, younger, athletic as hell and plain just had more in the gas tank to beat the 76ers. Sure of course we could have used 30 from Andrew but Toney NEVER averaged that, he averaged 17 for his career in the playoffs, so 20 ppg was ABOVE his playoff average and in any case that was not the reason. Sugar Ray Richardson was the issue. HE controlled the pace of the series NOT Mo Cheeks. Birdsong, Sugar Ray, Dawkins, Buck Williams and Albert King was a whole lot of athleticism, the Nets matched up wonderfully with older Philly (Doc was 3 yrs from retirement, Bobby Jones, 2 yrs away), the Nets played harder and just plain beat the 76ers. I watched each game as it happened, astounded, baffled, pissed. I lived the 76ers back then, was on Broad Street in 1983 for the parade.The Nets took the Bucks 6 games in the next series, the Nets were a tough out. That great Bucks team SWEPT the Larry Legend Celtics the year before and in 84 the Nets were two points from taking those Bucks to a game 7.

The Sixers, though rebounding quite nicely that season from the prior year here, were still on a slow decline, while Boston was coming up on their 4-year reign in the East..on paper, Philly should have been the conference's dominant team, after their historic run in '83..particularly with the addition of Barkley but alas, they couldn't put it together, and the injuries really derailed them..
