When you're receiving a fast ball in tennis and you're hitting a groundstroke, you may be late on it often.
The main reason why that happens is because you want to see the ball well after the bounce and that's just not possible. You'll need to swing "blind" and the clip above explains how we do it.
You'll also learn a feeding drill and live ball drills progression to help you master controlling fast incoming balls to your forehand or your backhand. Спорт
Thank you. I have seen this video many times and I learn something new always. Firstly, I need to stop panicking. Secondiy, prepare in advance and backswing at 45 degrees.
Hey Tomaz! Just wanted to tell you you’re an amazing teacher, don’t stop! I love your drills, your videos are always super useful, thank you!
Pretty amazing. My coach top advise was: when you hit the ball, your body should look like it is doing it effortless. I have been trying to achieve this efortless hit for a long time now... going through your videos and drills tips makes the whole thing a lot easier. Thanks!!
Hi Tomaz.. Thanks for sharing. Love the crystal clear instructions. Will try this out and court tomorrow..
This is my third time around for this lesson. I practice and apply it each time I go out to rally. What became quite plain to me is that this approach provides a very good means of 'finding' the ball, which I think your comments below about catching the ball touch on -- we have to track it and time it, and physically come in contact with it under control.
Tomas, I’ve been in tennis for a long time, both as an atp player and as a national coach. Always so impressed with your videos and clear instructions. Thanks again for your great work.
You have a computer generated level tennis name
Excellent explanations and methods of improving against fast balls. I've always struggled with this but now I know what to be aware of. Love your videos!
Great insight here Tomaz, we are all very fortunate to have you as an instructor
I've recommended many to view your videos for learning tennis. Thanks all that you do.
I truly enjoy and learn from your lessons. They have made my game so much better. It has finally occurred to me that I need to learn to simply relax and "dance" with the ball like I move with the music and a woman on the dance floor.
I like the way that you take the game apart for its technical aspects and then put it back together for a smooth approach in which you learn to trust your body.
I have watched many tennis instructional videos on RUclips and find that you are indeed the number one teacher, far and away better than everyone else. Please know that your time and efforts are sincerely appreciated.
Thanks to share ur knowledge, this tips are amazing.... congratulations by great job!!!
As always, outstanding tennis instruction - thanks
Excellent video!! Great teaching drill, thank you
Great lesson, with nice practice tips.
Your videos are great. Concise and to the point.

Thanks Tomaz, good easily understood instructions. Nice coaching skills.....Thomas from Australia.
Thanks Tomaz Sir for clearing major doubts of slow and fast balls, it's amazing to watch your videos. 💐💐
Excellent channel!!!... I learned very good tips. Thanks a lot for all team
His lesson is almost always bang on! great tips!!
Hi, just wanted to give You a feedback: I am myself tennis coach (in Finland) and I like Your videos VERY MUCH. I like that You think and observe very well and can isolate the reason of the problem and thats why You can find original and didacticaly very good exercises. I myself applied few of them in my coaching! Thanks a lot! Maybe when I am ones in Slovenia, it would be nice to see You coaching personally :) (I myself am Czech and spend every summer few weeks in Middle Europe...)...
But it's all praise, not feedback!
He must be happy to read it!
Thank you Tomaz, its a great exercise. I will ask my tennis teacher to rehearse it with me!
In our men's senior mixed doubles there are several players with speedy serves which have caused me to make mistakes. this video will be a BIG help. Tnx
WOW...this video is so informative and very useful drills to practice on the courts. keep up the great work Tomaz and I can't wait to see more of your instructions videos. :)
Excellent video. Many thanks
Another excellent video, thank you.
You are awesome. I promise I will use this because I just try to hit the ball back with a quick fast swing so Thank you so much for the help
I am doing this especially on rallies however, I dont really know how I did it...you have dissected every steps when hitting a fast ball. Thanks Tomaz.
Such great instruction!!!🙏💪🎾 Thank you
Useful tips. Helps me to improve my standard
Very good work and well explained thank you very much
Thanks Tomas and Sasha! Another great one
Nice explanation.. it cleared most of my confusions.. thanks..😊
you are an intelligent trainer, with a vivid communication skills...you are really good and few like you available in youtube...
Your lessons are so good. Do you have something for double handed backhand. I find it very difficult to hit it deep and with control.
This is my number one weakness in tennis (attacking the slice with a modern forehand of any kind. I generally slice very well. But have always struggled most with the modern swing. I'm going to try this out heavily in training the next few weeks (getting lower in the approach) and will let you know how it goes. Thanks for such a great post.
Hi Thomas! I'd like to know about the court ? Dimensions ? Cover materials ? Panoramic view ? I'll be grateful if you reply.
Very good video Tomaz! Thanks a lot! I'll try to do it, it's for sure!
Very clear and concise, thank you T.
Thank you for your guidance, I will try my best.✌️
Very good and easy to understand instruction
Another nice video Tomaz! I find that if I think about catching the ball with my hand, rather than hitting it, my timing is better. As the ball comes to me, I move like I'm going to catch it. I drop my hand below the flight of the ball and, as it gets near, I reach out for it. This reaching starts my stroke. It doesn't really matter where (or if) the ball bounces. Even though this sounds convoluted, on video, it looks like a normal stroke.
Good point, John. "Catching" the ball calms down the stroke as we naturally slow down and even stop the hand when we catch a fast moving object. I feel more just sweeping through the contact zone with a calm, undisturbed, steady movement and the ball is bounced off (rather than me hitting it).
Once again, a very lucid, rational, and somehow comforting, explanation of how to survive the unsurvivable: a shell blast right at your feet. Normally, I would have just given up on a shot like this or written success or failure up to the Gods of the Odds, but no, "Daddy" Tomaz calmly explains what to do and, in doing so, makes everything seem alright. "You can do this," he seems to be saying, "and here's how." Thank God for making people like this guy. (And thank you, Tomaz, for another EXCELLENT video.)
+James Davis Big Daddy Tomaz once again teaching us how to dumpster kids back to stone age.
Wonderful video I will definitely use this I'm some purposeful practice.
Very helpful I love the fast and slow exercise
Thanks Tomaz . Really helped me with my return
thank you. good point. swing before bounce.
Hi Tomaz, it's been great watching your training on the platform, you're doing a great job here. Also I want to ask how one should receive fast ball coming a little bit high than low?
Thanks. A very good lesson.
This was well explained, nice job!
I just wanted to add that you don't need a big take-back when the ball is coming fast.
thanks tomaz you gave me great tips!!!!
Great video! How can I hit the ball fast but low? Is there a video of yours where you demonstrate how to do it? Or will there be one soon?
awesome lessons thank you!
Hi Tomaz, love your videos! Super helpful. My swing path on the forehand side seems to get more vertical when receiving low fast ball. My swing is not fast and I am also hitting in front of me (meaning I am not late). Is that normal?
This help me a lot.Thank you.
Thanks. It's helpful and very logical and relevant. I have a question though: in this case you will be dominated during all the rally, won't you? Or is it a way to reverse the situation?
Great tips, thanks 👌
Best Instructor I see even in real, thank you Tomaz, go a head...
another point can you provide us more instructions for Backhand, Backhand slice..
Nice video. It makes me better. Thanks
Thanks very useful tips.
Thank you very much !Its really helpful👍
Cheers! I've always struggled with fast balls
Excellent as always but can you demo this drill on the backhand?
Good advices. Gonna try it next time
Brilliant, thanks coach!
thank you for your teaching!!!
Great job and thank you.
Tomaz, Great teaching points and drills. Your third point of staying low and maintaining eye contact in this fast ball situation is important not only at the baseline, but it applies equally to the half volley wouldn't your agree? When I saw this at 5:00 in the video, it reminded me that too often when I miss my half volleys I find myself looking forward instead of tracking the ball.
Excellent tip.
Great video!!!
One of my hitting partners does this to me with great effect. I blast the ball and he just counters it back. I need to learn the same. Wonderful instruction
Great lesson! Fast pace balls are the most difficult to handle.
Very useful lesson, since I've gotten burned with fast balls too many times.
Thank you. Good video
I have been struggling with handling fast balls. I hope this useful technique would help.
nice tips dude cary on with those good videos
Great tip! thanks!!
Thomas nice videos, I like the way you explain things and also the choice of your topics! Are you from Eastern Europe? Russia or Serbia?
Thanks I'll for sure practise this
Kia ora Thomas another great vid thanks
Good stuff ! Thanks a lot.
great video Tomaz!
The ball often lands short, when I hit such guiding shots and I often loose a point right after it. Do you have any ideas how to fix it?
Thx againg for another great video!
You may be too tight when guiding the ball, see if you can hold the racquet "nicely". Secondly, you must have clear intention of where you want to play the ball before you hit it. Is that's not in your mind, meaning you are aiming very deep, the ball won't go deep. And thirdly, keep adjusting, if balls are short, aim deeper. Here and there the ball will sail long and that's normal...
Good, learned something new again !
what shoes is your friend wearing ? it looks kinda cool !
I had that problem today, I had an opponent that his only goal was to hit as hard as possible. Many times after the ball was bouncing it would just pass by me quite high not being able to hit it. Does that mean that I should place myself quite further back from the bounce point or should I go more to the front and try to hit it as it lifts from the ground? Thanks a lot for all the help!
It's like im cramming for an exam, I have an important tennis match tommorow
Harshith Gowni how did it go!?
@@kribatz158 He lost
Watari 😔
@@kribatz158 I can't get over this loss either, iam still having nightmares from it.
Watari you any better yet
nice video thank you
Great orientation. 👍🏻
thanks for your video. i can practice to return fast balls becaus i often rush to return fast balls.
Awesome thank you
Really nice
Thanks!
very good thanks
Helpful 👌🏻
Best coach
Makes complete sense!
One can also see a great example of this by watching a RUclips video of Connors vs. McEnroe, especially their early matches. Conners would blast a hard, low, shot and McEnroe would also slow motion his racquet swing. Talk about timing and reading the ball!
like the video, will try this next time I'm on the court
Some very good points in this video, I would just say to be careful using words like pushing and going slow when talking about tennis strokes. Tennis swings work best when they can flow, even when handling fast balls. Pushing can take away the feel of a flowing swing, and going slow will risk the racket decelerating before contact. I like that you emphasise the loose holding of the racket, that's very important.
+Nick Wheatley There are other Tomaz videos in wich he explains that every groundstroke is composed of throwing and pushing action. In a normal drive the percentaje of throwing is higher, but when handling fast balls, the percentaje of pushing is higher. Nick it´s your work to find the correct balance in each situation.
You are a freaking genius.
this is sweet as - final exercise is an excellent one I think
