I started playing tennis six week ago and people in my club tells me I'm about USTA 3.0. They are shocked to hear that I learnt the game watching your videos and without actual lessons. I may need a private lesson someday but I want to thank you for teaching me how to play. IMHO, you do a best job in explaining tennis among many on RUclips.
One of the best(if not the best) coaches I've seen. I've learnt so much from yourself. You really explain the mechanics/physics of the game and that ain't easy. Keep the tuition coming, I'm eager for more progression. Cheers.
Such a phenomenal clarification of doing vs making topspin happen. The crazy thing is that this is the fourth time I've watched this video and only now did it click for me.
I've spent quite a lot of money doing private lessons & still don't have a forehand; didn't even learn anything about topspin. I just watched 2 of your videos (including this one) & I learn more about topspin forehand than I ever knew before. Thanks a million; you're a great coach. Really hope some day I'll be able to do some private lessons with you. I've watched many tennis videos on RUclips & you're the best I've seen. Keep it up.
This last tip about topspin has been invaluable for me, thanks Tom! I was really suffering from the "fabricated topspin style" and from using too much my forearm.. All of your videos are unique and useful but this for me was a true revelation! Hope to see more and more material from you soon! (I also appreciate the fact that you produce a video only when you have something interesting to say, and not just for the sake of pumping out content...)
This is EXACTLY the video I needed! I am definitely guilty of trying impart topspin on my shots very intentionally, and just like you said, I often get a lot of miss hits when the shots speed up (either framing the shot or hitting a really shallow and loopy shot)
Great video. Exactly my problem right now. I don't like to deliberately brush the ball, but my shots are a bit flat. Will try making contact further ahead.
I just want to add my gratitude of your videos. You have a simple yet most effective way of explaining and demonstrating. I currently train my young son and use your videos for tips. He is one of the best in his county and playing up in his age group. Please continue your fantastic work. It really is "feel "tennis. You are the best on line coach there is!
thanks. good tip to handle fast balls. I did end up hitting the fast balls in to the net while trying to top-spin them with a vertical trajectory. Now will try and return fast balls with a natural swing and still get some spin to keep the ball in the court.
Your videos are always great and give a better perspective of adjustments that need to be made and HOW these can be implemented successfully. Thank you.
this is genius video. This is exactly my problem ! I keep exaggerating on fast balls , too many mis-hits and then i resort to my reliable deep slice. I will try this way. Wish you were in Atlanta !
I need this video in my life and I will come back to it over and over again. I was doing exactly the wrong thing trying to pull up on a fast ball and I either frame it or hit super short ball in matches, than i magnify the mistake my trying to brush up even faster and frame it even more. The vicious cycle continue and I end up hitting short ball all day and got push back even further back and lose lots of matches like that against similar level player.
You saved my forehand. Thx. I came back from a couple days without tennis and my forehand, my weapon, was total shit. Now I think I figured out why. I tried to spin the ball with this steep upward motion, which I was used to 2-3 years ago and by using it I had now length control, framed that many shots and now I know why. Btw I figured out how to time the shot with the steeper angel, and got like 4500-5500 rpm and forehands launching of my stringbed with extreme height, spin and little pace... Thank you very much! Would I've seen this video 5 days ago, I had won the tournament I played this weekend... Dammit
its probably due to your racquet face and/or follow through. Make sure you are following all the way through up at least shoulder level. To force this you could tuck your chin in your shoulder holding the racquet. Also you should look into taking some clinics or private lessons and explain to the instructor that you want more top spin and they can make on the spot corrections. Sometimes you may "feel" you are doing it like the video but in reality you are not.
I watched another youtube video that proposes that that federer is able to hit the ball with so much spin and that he is able to do this by going across the ball in the last micro second. So the resulting spin is mixture of both top spin and side spin. The tutor said the arm and the wrist can be more actively engaged which allows the raquet to more vigorously work the ball. Do you agree?
This is exactly how Federer hits the ball. I was always trying to figure out why his shot looks different. He takes the ball so late but somehow it pops up with topspin. This explains it all. Thank you! You're the best coach I've found and I've searched the entire internet.... Trust me.
Excellent explanation/illustration of the differences between generating topsin on a fed/easy ball as opposed to actual match situations where the ball is quite different. Thanks for putting out quality concepts and videos!
I also find that a lower ball, like a slower ball, is easier to hit up on more than a higher ball, or faster ball. When the ball is a bit higher, I find I need a shallower, flatter swing path. Good lesson.
Thomas thanks for your excellent explanation. i totally agree with the previous comment made by Bo Kim & reconfirm his point of view. As a Junior Coach I am learning and applying all your tips & scientific explanations that are easily understood by everybody & practically not complicated to apply. thanks again.
What I would like is for those 49 thumb-downers to state exactly what they thought was wrong in the instruction? Or do these people simply suffer from Nigativitis? IMHO - Lead (point out where you differ from the instruction in the video) or Follow or Get out of the way keeping your thumbs to yourselves!!! Mr. Thomas provides the very best possible tennis instruction in the solar system! Period.
EXCATLY what i was looking for im a beginner and my dad always hits super fast balls and the topspin he taught me won't work against it but this HELPS SO MUCH
I've been taught to use the windshield wiper and always struggled with the wiper on fast balls. Now it all makes sense, don't use it on fast balls, a detail my tennis trainer did't tell me :D
Mmm, not sure I agree - if the ball is fast sure you swing flatter towards it so the racquet can see the ball for longer but it's the followthru that adds most of topspin and you can followthru steeper just as reliably as a shallower (in my experience).
It also looks like your racket it angled forward at the top as opposed to be straight up and down, am I correct about that??? Thanks for your amazing video's. I am trying to learn to relax and feel the shot instead of what I usually do which is muscle it!!
I've heard coaches use the term "lay the wrist back"; I think that means relax the wrist a little to allow gravity to lower the racquet a few centimeters so that you can get more low-to-high motion (brush up) on the ball. Watching tv, it looks like Nick Kyrgios really swats his forehand, when he has time. Maybe he really exaggerates the wrist layback more than is typical before hitting? I think I observe something similar with Djokavic's backhand. When a fast ball comes back, are you advised against laying back the wrist so much? Of course, my perception doesn't mean that's what is actually occuring.
Ethan, the wrist is always laid back on any type of ball before we make contact, the only question is how much do we release it. Yes, Kyrgios "swats" or "slaps" the ball sometimes which means he releases the wrist. But he keeps it more steady on faster balls and returns.
Great video, thx!! Make the spin happen. Same concept at the volley. There also we create a passive backward spin while we go into the ball with an open racket face. In contrast to the drop shot - there we create a active backward spin. Hope Im right Tomaz;-)
Mr Tomaz, I'm having trouble implementing this technique in my own games. For fast balls I usually stand 8 or more feet behind the baseline similar to what Nadal does, and find it easier to return these balls when striking them after they have already started on their downward flight. I usually use a low to high swing path when doing this, and find the closer to the baseline I get the more balls I miss hit or completely skank . Should I stick to what I have been doing or continue trying to master these topspin techniques? I'm 6 feet 9 inches tall by the way and standing further back makes me lose a good amount of points on slices and backspin balls dropping in front. Thanks for your time. Steve
I have been struggling with my forehand for years. Before, I often hit balls out of court, especially in the games. So, I need to hit the balls softly, saving my power a lot. But I really hate that way. I want my powerful big forehand striking my opponents' court like top players showing us. Then, I realized that I need more the top-spin on my forehand and changed my grip from the eastern to the semi-western, finally to the full-western grip currently. However, my forehand still hit balls out at some decisive moments in the games, when I hit the balls harder. Usually, I don't apply the traditional forehand, the low to high up on the shoulder but the modern forehand, the "Wiper swing". Some trainers force me the traditional way but I don't want to do the way. Because I want to hit the balls like Djokovic, Nishikori and other players who are applying the modern forehand. I have no idea what are wrong in my forehand, grip? swing? swing speed? contact point? I appreciate if you would advice me on how to make the powerful big forehand without hitting balls outside of court.
What grip are you using in your forehand swing and how does the grip affect the swing technique for topspin? Does this lesson apply the same to all grips, or do different grips require different swing techniques?
I hold between semi-western and eastern forehand grip. All grips have similar swing path, only the extreme western forehand grip tends to swing more across the ball since that's how the wrist wants to move naturally.
Perfect. It is the swing path. The steeper the path more top spin( less speed), lesser speed like Nadal. As it reduces it has more speed but less the top spin like del potro.
Hi Darren, you are to think more about path through the ball instead of trying to spin it with your wrist in a very "artificial" way. The spin will just happen as a result of your swing path.
I think that the effort of "geeting up the arm" against a faster ball it may produce, also, a lost of balance. That will be the case, when the ball lands far away the base line. Are you agree?
This is awesome. Exactly what I been looking for. Spent so much time focusing on forearm and wrist for topspin, that I developed an ugly inefficient constantly shanking forehand which I still have, since its hard to untrain. Can you direct to other videos you have to compliment this that get into the fundamental "action" to create topspin, separate from the "additional" actions that can be added (like using the forearm) to the fundamental action. Thanks again!
Can you do a video on how to bend your body for power before you hit the ball when you serve? Like arching your body like a bow and bending your knees primarily? I noticed some pros have more knee bend than arch and others more arch than knee bend ... Can there be a perfect balance of both? Thank you coach! ~~
Hi Jean, I wouldn't go too technical there. Think more about loading your body with energy and then releasing it and your body will naturally do what's necessary. If you throw a ball far, do I need to tell you to arch your back and lean backwards and bend your knees or does that just happen automatically? ;)
Hi Tomaz. Would it be fair to say that this idea cannot work for all grip types? Continental grip players would sky their shots had they applied an upward trajectory to their swing. In other words, grip type cannot be ignored when considering applying topspin. One needs the angle of the face of the racquet to counterbalance the upward path of the racquet.
You definitely have to close the face at contact because if you don't, the incoming spin will likely cause the ball to jump off your strings. By closing the face slightly the spin is absorbed by the strings and actually helps create your own spin coming back (the ball actually sticks in the strings longer because you counter the incoming upward bouncing ball).
I use continental grip and can't get topspin. My swing path is low to high and always goes long. If the swing path is flatter, it ends up pure drive. How do I fix that problem? It's my second year playing tennis.
Try semi Western grip, weird at first but more natural and no awkward wrist movements. Either that or you have to hit ball on the rise which requires sublime timing
I love your vids but this one has me a bit confused. Are you (1) actually suggesting that on fast balls we try to move the contact point a bit forward to generate topspin or (2) that on those fast balls we should not worry about imparting "extra" topspin because our natural racquet path and natural contact point will take care of that for us?
The "contact point a bit forward" is more on the power side effect. Still come low to high but much less steeper this time - basically let it flow naturally for less effort but it'll have more power effect though... if I may.

Hi Tomaz. I also deeply appreciate your teaching and thank you for that! My question is where to find your school?
thank you so much. I'm learning tennis and your videos are very important for me.
Thank you, great advice! How do you ensure that the racket face does not open too much before contact?
Thanks, now I see why I mis- hit some balls like serves, and why I do that more on hard courts! Agree with others, you are very easy to understand.
Great video! Could you do a analysis of Nadals forehand?

Do you have a tennis camp for adults? Possible a tennis intensive weekend for a modern game.
Great video sir... But i want to improve my backhand and how to hit backhand topspin
Amazing tip here, so easy to understand, so intuitive that I feel a little silly that I didn't realize it on my own haha.
Congrat for the explanation.
Nice video ! Dome video for the toss of the ball soon ? It's My big problem
The best tennis lesson online video i've ever watched .. 💓ful thank ....
can we generate top spin with closed stance forehand. i see most people generating top spin with open stance forehand.
Excellent. As always. Thank you!
It also looks like your racket it angled forward at the top as opposed to be straight up and down, am I correct about that??? Thanks for your amazing video's. I am trying to learn to relax and feel the shot instead of what I usually do which is muscle it!!

i can swing on a slow ball? Thanks for the tips coach!!
How do nadal and jack sock get so much spin?
Vick Singh they are pros with amazing timing
They use semi western and full western grips ...
@@tennisandogs hello there, can you tell me what grip the instructor is using, ,is it a semi western hard to tell? thank you.

Mr Tomaz, I'm having trouble implementing this technique in my own games.
Still come low to high but much less steeper this time - basically let it flow naturally for less effort but it'll have more power effect though... if I may.
