Hey Kerstin!! I am planning on harvesting some seed pods from a tree in my neighborhood so I can have one of these beautiful trees. i have never worked with any kinds of seeds before though so I was wondering how yours turned out? was the soil method successful?
So how are the catalpa trees doing? I only see the video you did on how to harvest and prepare the seeds for cold-moist-stratification and no additional videos. Would be interested in seeing how they are doing! I started some catalpa seeds on June 10, 2022 and in four days I had three germinate and have another one germinating currently. I use a seedling heat mat and that helps speed up germination. I swear by the use of seedling heat mats, which provide bottom heat to encourage the seeds to germinate faster. Thanks!
This is great! What do I do with them after they come out of the fridge in two weeks? Do they have a soil preference? Light preference? Temperature? I want to start a bunch in pots to give away to be planted around town. They used to grow wild around here but were cut for railroad ties back in the day. :( Now they only show up as decoration in yards.
Catalpas make great shade trees and grow fast. But they are expensive to buy. Have you ever wonderd what to do with the pods and seeds from your Catalpa tree? In this video I show you how to harvest the seeds and prep them for the planting season. If you like the video please leave me a comment. Thanks for watching!
i have been having good luck taking cuttings for tips of catalpa trees about 12 in long cut all leaves off scrape bottom 1inch or so add powder (optional) bury 6 in deep in good soil wet it set for indirect sun it will sprout soon watch for new leaves keep it damp thisgive about 1 yrs growth over seeds some of mine are 3 ft tall in 5 gal buckets
FYI: Catalpa seeds do NOT need to be cold-moist stratified! They are ready to sow right away. ;-)
