A difference that can't be dismissed between the before trilogy and la la land (and plenty of other films with similar dialogue) is time and focus. This trilogy is built around dialogue, those scenes are far longer and given most weight, while for example la la land doesn't have time for that, because the character interaction is through colour, music and dance, that is given most importance in that film. Great essay, by the way!

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I always thought, that it should have been only one movie. Before Sunrise perfectly encapsulated the bittersweetness of human relations in my opinion. The fact that two people can meet, form a bond, and then lose it just as fast as they created it, was always so fascinating to me. The fact that they meet again, kind of spoils the that in my eyes. Life's full of people you bond with but never meet again, and I thought the real-ness of both of them accepting, although being hopeful of course, that they're not going to spend the rest of their life together, and that life moves on, whether they're together or not, strangely beautiful. Accepting the end is after all, one of the hardest parts of being human.

the only one i didn't fully like was midnight. i felt it made it seem like infidelity was just something natural. can it happen and people can survive it? of course. i do think that as humans monogamy is not something everyone or even most people are bound to. but the lost of trust, the bitterness and lack of hearing each other on both sides makes me feel it is not as healthy as a relationship as it once were.

I can understand your perspective but I'd also like to add a different perspective: when we meet a person, there is often a serendipitous meet-again moment that happens; I think the trilogy did an amazing job at expanding on that and how it isn't always laced with only joy in the way fairytales make them out to be.

Their relationship didn't end in Before Midnight. It showed them strugling with serious problems that people have (career problems, custody battles...). In the end they decide to stay together. Jesse tells her "this is true love", and it is. It's not a perfect, careless life, it's staying together and loving each other even when you don't LIKE each other all the time.
What I really didn't like was so focused on sex, not just Jesse and Celine, but the other characters as well. It was childish and annoying.

It works, really well, as long as you observe and enjoy and try to distance yourself. Don't make it part of your own experiences. Maybe there is a moment. Leave it on the screen.

The big question- if Linklater is to make another BEFORE film....what should be the title? Who ever gets the most likes, I’ll write send a letter to Richard with the results.

Love the analysis - constructive feedback is to use music that is a bit more in tune with the trilogy.

Nerdwriter1 did a similar video a few days ago, but this is definitely a much better video. The Before Trilogy is a much better example of realistic dialogue and your presentation was much more creative and artistic. Now that Every Frame a Painting is over, you're my first channel to go to for film video essays.

What I do Is I write the words on a different language. Then give the actors the meanings they have to convey or try to explain. And they come up with the lines.

This brings up an interesting dilemma. On one hand this style sounds natural and spontaneous and can really draw in the viewer but how much of the dialogue sticks after fade out?
Contrast that with the unnatural, unrealistic, sound byte style dialogue of something like Star Wars or The Matrix which remains in the mind like chorus lines of pop songs and end up being so frequently and easily quotable.
I enjoy Linklater’s frictionless dialogue but, with the exception of sections of Scanner Darkly, it to me is more ephemeral than the former examples.
Stylised, sound bytey dialogue seems to always be more memorable.
    A predicament.
    Thoughts?
