the sheer intensity of this has stuck with me for years now. I'm commenting after all this time because this particular song and segment always lurks deep in the darker thoughts of my mind, waiting for me to forget just to remember again - the combination of the art and the song leave me completely breathless and numb in the mind still after 9 years. I cannot fathom a deeper, more meaningful combination of media.
Nothing is more motivating than the impending sense of doom. Living our lives, we forget about our own demise, we forget about the fact that all of us will eventually die. When death comes closer, we can just regret that we haven't done more, that we can't do more. How many times do we live shallow, searching for cheap pleasures instead of fighting for what we truly care? Whenever I hear this song, it just makes me a bit more motivated to sort my life because the worst sin someone can do is not trying to fulfil his own potential. The guy in the anime chased his dream so much he eventually tried to catch his future self... . This song is more about life than death. We live cause we die.
That feeling of dread after realizing the meaninglessness of existing and that you're more likely trapped in hell rather than anything remotely related to paradise.
This animation is the best and most intricate style of animation there is, involving more hours of work than any other type. The movie was highly underrated and should go down as one of the best in animation history. Something about riding the last stand is amazing

To anyone feeling lost or alone and don't think they can proceed with life, just take a deep breath and hold it down. You ain't alone. Thank you Lorn for helping me through some of my darkest hours.
This music tingles that certain part of my brain. The part that starts sparking up when you think too long about he concept of darkness. The one that sparks up when you try to understand the size of the universes around us. It’s like the fear of the unknown mixed with this helplessness and intimidation that whatever is out there, is better at surviving than you are. That it knows more somehow. The video is awesome and really extends this feeling but just. My god. There’s something absolutely unsettling about listening to this with nothing but your own thoughts too.
Excellent comment. English is not my first language, so I can't put it into words as good as you did. But this is what I associate with the vibe this song gives me: Are you really ready for the world out there? Are you going to make it? Are you ready to face your own death one certain day?
This gives me a more hopeless dismal and truly gray feeling, not yet black, yet decidedly very much so darker than white, despondent dreary and most of all.. Dingy. It feels ironically despite it's dystopian aura, very much so real

I keep coming back. Lorn did something with this song and Acid Rain that will make you bleed emotion. There's no other electronic artist like him. I dare say no other artist like him. A conduit drawing out something suppressed. No words really fully describe it.
Two artists, separated by decades but unified in what their art has accomplished. Lorn was born to make Sega Sunset edit for Neo Tokyo. Your soul just feels it. This is glorious. I’m burning, and as you resonate with their art, resonate with me, let’s burn it all out, until we are ones who burn.
Lorn songs are often like a black rose. Only those who have crossed the darkness can see the full beauty of this rose and still you prick yourself with the thorn. the pain doesn't hurt that much.
I remember that day, when i found this track. I was sitting on window sill and watched the city from high building, outside the window was rainy. And this track fullfilled all that, what was happening in the city.
Sometimes I like to lay in bed at night, when everyones asleep and not a single foreign sound can be heard, apart from the faint buzzing in my lights, my heartbeat and this song playing quietly on my phone beside me. Sometimes its great to have a minute of silence to yourself, when no one can say anything to hurt you, even my thoughts go silent. Sometimes I let a tear roll down, to remind myself I have come this far, and I will continue to go further. Sorry guys, Im feeling nostalgic tonight...
Vance Apollo I'm doing that right now. It's 5am and quiet enough that I can hear my heart beating. This music really complements the melange of silence.
1:10 That expression he makes as he extends past his physical limits. It's not hesitation but it reads something like a moment of fear. This is beautifully edited and it seems to tell an even more interesting story than the source.
Man, i wish the anime industry didn't switch to the "quantity over quality" model, cause these old animes required a lot of work and budget to be produced, but it always paid off, i love the looks and the realism of old anime, something that; unfortunately, practically doesn't exist anymore, the 2000s were the last time i saw this type of anime and film being produced. It's unfortunate we don't get these things anymore.
The anime is a short for the Running Man. A racer with telekinesis. The story is told from the narrators', a writer, point of view. It is one of the best ever made. The music at the end is haunting.
No, there are 3 segments and this segment ("Running Man") was directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri and not Katsuhiro Ōtomo. Katsuhiro directed the third segment ("Construction Cancellation Order").
Madhouse studios anime is the best catalogue of anime ever. Paprika, Perfect blue, ninja scroll, animatrix, vampire hunter D, all the cyberpunk stuff including this, mark my words all that will be the new trend in Hollywood fo sho
I came across Lorn in a time where I was going through some dark shit. The melancholic vibe in this and many other Lorn songs made it slightly easyer to cope with pointless existance.
In short: The seasoned undefeated champion “Zack Hugh” of the “Death Circus” has won yet another victory. His trick? While all other drivers are physically there. Zack uses telekinesis to control his car, and a cyborg driver... In this scene: The race is won, and the champ remains undefeated. After all of the other drivers have left the track. Zack goes for a victory lap. He continues to drive on, tearing around the track. A ghost driver suddenly appears. There can only be one champion.. Even after his body is pushed past its ultimate physical limit.. He pushes even further, past death to finish the race. They say it was a ghost of his past self he saw out there on that track...
This song and this AMV must always exist on the internet. I refuse to accept a reality where this video has been scrubbed from youtube and is no longer present on the internet. When that day comes, the remaining scraps of my tattered soul shall linger no more in this realm and dissipate into the cold harsh wind... LongLiveLorn.
MetaCitizen I only learned of Lorn 1 1/2 days ago on Rage, Australia's music video show. I have listened to this track at least 6 times, and sent the video to all of my friends. I can't get enough of this.
It always feels like LORN and their music videos are just a small cutout of something bigger. Their musictracks sound like previews taken right from the middle of a bigger work and their videos could as well be obscure full length movies. It definitely hits a spot.
This song isn't just sad--it literally hurts to listen to. Maybe it's the heartbreaking video that pairs so well with it, but just listening to it takes me beyond crying and into something much more soul-wrenching.
When I'm at home on my day of and I receive the call from my command stating that the team is being activated to handle whatever problem there is that requires our expertise. After telling my family I love them very much and kissing them goodbye, I get in my car and play this track. As I proceed down the highway, I think about my training and all the dangers of the entering the unknown and how I'm ready to face whatever there is before me. This song sets the tone for my mind and puts me in the game. Thank you for uploading! Great Track!

+Rin Tohsaka Not sure where you're from but censorship in the UK 80s was very strict from the BBFC who pretty much banned and cut every video nasty. Today, movies get away with a lot more, a 12a is more like a 15. I don't know what Japans censorship is like or if anyghing has changed but there has certainly been a saturation on anime.
It’s like watching a memory through someone else’s eyes. Thats why you feel the anger and the sadness, but the calmness with the reconciling of it all.
A song that evokes driving down a long, winding coastal highway, watching as the sun slowly dies on the horizon, thinking about one critical mistake you made that cost you everything you had in your life. Now, you are left wandering aimlessly, not knowing where you're going next or why. All you know is that you will keep traveling onwards, as your aimless journey seems to be the only thing that soothes the void in your soul anymore.
I see so many different translations to this video. Unavoidable tragedy is a big one, however, I also see pushing past our limits. Taking ourselves to extremes that we aren't supposed to go but as humans we inevitably do. I see addiction, yearning for the highest high but that addiction kills you in the end. There's so much to these Lorn videos, truly it's art 🎨 😍

Thanks, I actually was unaware of amv's as a popular trend before I did this, but watch Neotokyo for sure, another really good anime anthology is "Memories" watch both, and listen to more from Lorn, he composed half the music for the new Killzone game as well.
I, likewise, have gotten the urge to acquaint myself with this Anime of which I have never heard of before after watching this very well-composed AMV. Might I also add, this song, especially the distorted guitar sound, reminds me of the movie Dead Man, with a soundtrack written by Neil Young.
Pterodactyl I just watched it, it don't think it's better at all. The explosions on beat breaks are cool, but that mirror effect is stupid and the build up and editing quality of this video is 100x better.

That’s cool In all but I found this song because of the doge sex meme

Corrodan Anime had less of a budget back then and wasn’t as popular around the world why did the animation change

I can't listen to this song without thinking of these visuals. Totally matched the late 80s anime style.
+Ronald Jones Yep, incredible how well it fits
There's this certain feel to this anime artstyle. And that's because it is hand drawn. That just gives it so much soul. Every line tells a story.
Heavy Metal
Yes, you perfectly described it.
I would love to know more people like you with excellent feeling of moment and understading conecpts of unknow reality. Thank you for your comment !
Meaning of the video - Zack Hugh (Banjō Ginga) is the titular "Running Man," the undefeated champion of the "Death Circus" racing circuit and has raced for 10 years. Competitors race in high-speed Formula One-like craft, and spectators bet on the lives of these people for huge winnings. A Marlowe-esque reporter (Masane Tsukayama/Michael McConnohie) is sent to interview the mysterious Zack outside of the track and watches one of his races. He soon discovers Hugh has telekinetic abilities which he uses to destroy the other racers, after quietly observing him in the dark chronically over-using a training interface inside his penthouse. As the race ends in his favor, the monitors in the pit displays "LIFE FUNCTIONS TERMINATED." Mysteriously, though seemingly dead, Hugh continues around the track and is overtaken by a spectral racer. He attempts to employ the same strategy, straining to destroy the opponent, but in truth it is against his own mind. The force of the telekinesis is directed inward which rapidly tears both Hugh and his car apart. The Death Circus is permanently shut down afterwards; the reporter believing the event's true draw was the spectators need to see how long Hugh could beat death

You know those nights when its so silent you can almost hear yourself think?
same, let's all feel nostalgic together lol
Vance Apollo I'm doing that right now. It's 5am and quiet enough that I can hear my heart beating. This music really complements the melange of silence.

1:10 That expression he makes as he extends past his physical limits. It's not hesitation but it reads something like a moment of fear.
This is beautifully edited and it seems to tell an even more interesting story than the source.
He's being psychically controlled to his death. Movie; Neo Tokyo (1987)
It's 100% hand drawn btw. A real master work.

Thats a scary concept
Man, i wish the anime industry didn't switch to the "quantity over quality" model, cause these old animes required a lot of work and budget to be produced, but it always paid off, i love the looks and the realism of old anime, something that; unfortunately, practically doesn't exist anymore, the 2000s were the last time i saw this type of anime and film being produced. It's unfortunate we don't get these things anymore.
The anime is a short for the Running Man. A racer with telekinesis. The story is told from the narrators', a writer, point of view. It is one of the best ever made. The music at the end is haunting.
This has an Akira vibe to it.
thinking the same thing
the music too
This is part of a small movie from back in the 90s called Neo Tokyo, check it out!
omg same director!!!!! now it all makes sense, thanksssss
In this scene:
The race is won, and the champ remains undefeated.

It always feels like LORN and their music videos are just a small cutout of something bigger. Their musictracks sound like previews taken right from the middle of a bigger work and their videos could as well be obscure full length movies. It definitely hits a spot.
Discovered this during acid trip. I felt the intensity of this in my bones - not music anymore but emotion

I just spent 3 straight hours looking for this music video. Time well spent.
Lorn has the most big and menacing sound. Like you’re up against an unstoppable force. You can only listen as it envelopes you.
Found Lorn on Christmas Eve (technically christmas) at 3am my Junior year of high-school, there will never be an artist to emotionally and physically effect me more than Lorn. In probably the most vulnerable moment of my entire life, I was saved by the most melancholic sounds to have ever been produced. I cannot explain how much this music means to me, Thank You!

This is so beautiful, touches my soul. It's like telling you something, that you deeply regret.
The combination of art and music here perfectly describe a man's life journey in one word, Suffering.
Through this whole song you can here the cockpit shaking apart in your head.
I love such tunes. Those reminds me late night/ very early morning, with streets abandoned, foggy weather, a bit cold, nobody around, and myself heading in uknown direction in car, not speeding, jut cruising. Hoping for sun emerge but still not seeing the life around

You are king of amv's. I literally thought the music was written for the video as i have not seen neo tokyo, but I now shall.
I think the AMV with the same source video and the song "Wayfarer" by Kavinsky fits just as well, if not better.
Pterodactyl I just watched it, it don't think it's better at all. The explosions on beat breaks are cool, but that mirror effect is stupid and the build up and editing quality of this video is 100x better.
