When I first heard this song, I never knew the situation of Layne, but after finding out, you feel the pain and power of this song a thousand time more. There is a sense in the tone of his voice in this song and others that though grainy in style, gives a feeling of loss and struggle, and pain.
The song show us all that rawness that he felt inside and something he potentially couldn't explain to anyone outside of the medium. We lost an abolsute super talented person and a great human being.
I said it never helped me, not in the conventional way, the song is too sad for that, but it helped in a way by letting all my emotions tak over, process them and before finally putting things in perspective.
I thank this man, but in a way I wish I didn't have to in the sense that I was still here with us!

It was 6 years before his death. He was high as a kite for this concert. Jerry jad a food poisoning because of a bad hotdog he had eaten during the day.

As hard-hitting as the song is, I can't imagine the difference it felt after his death. It's like, at that point, the lyrics transcend the song.

Oh this performance was legendary. Lane was almost at his end, and he and his best friends had gotten together to reignite this magic. He was dopesick and self-concious about his lisp from his teeth disintegrating. And despite all this, he blows 99% of artists out of the water. This is as close as a person can come to singing at their own funeral.

That's pretty wild knowing that. I didn't know. "Close as a person can come to singing at their own funeral". Reading that is so unnervering, it hits you right in the soul. Feels sad but true.

@@RustySabitathis entire unplugged set is emotional. During “sludge factory”, Layne messed up and Jerry is visibly worried about him. Someone in the audience yelled something rude, and Layne was unnerved. Jerry told him it was okay and when they restarted the song, it was like the old days. But that lisp man…
Not long after this, Layne died alone in his apartment. It took three weeks for him to be missed and they found what was left of this legendary man in a way that was far less than what he gave the world. 😞

One of the main things thats so beautiful about this performance is just how authentic and real Layne was, he wasn't putting on a persona in any way, just a man utterly defeated by his addiction and demons...and the fact he could still sing this amazingly while in a really bad way and high as a kite is a marvel in of itself. The thing thats so haunting about this show is he's singing as if he knows he's gonna die. A good analogy I heard is that it sounds like heaven but hurts like hell. RIP Layne 💔

Hell of a video to kick off a reaction channel. Nutshell is just one of those special songs, by a special group of artists. In seeing all the various reactions to it, reading through all the various comments, I am really happy to learn that Alice in Chains, and Layne specifically, connect with the younger generations. But I do wonder if there's a bit of generational divide in terms of the takeaway from songs like Nutshell which you encapsulated beautifully in relating your personal experience with it. For the older generations, I think a song like Nutshell is far less hopeless and bleak than it seems to the younger generations. I always take a measure of resolve and perseverance away from Alice in Chains' music regardless of how dark the subject matter is. At the time when this music was new, it was a coping mechanism for many young people that felt isolated, and I think that's why Alice in Chains in particular are having sort of a second life in the online age. I love this song because of the beauty it imparts through the expressing of a deep sadness. I don't wallow in the sadness though, I empathize with Layne's plight and I relate his struggles to my own. In doing so I allow the sweet, melodic cadence of the strumming and drumming to soothe me. It's the equivalent of someone putting their hand on your shoulder to wordlessly communicate that yeah, they've been there as well, and it sucks, and it can be lonely, but it's our struggles that define us as people, and grow our character. I know I personally don't consider Nutshell a heartbreaking or haunting song, the performance.. that's a separate discussion, but the song to me is expressing pain in the hopes of healing it, not succumbing to it. Sorry to ramble, good luck with the channel. You have excellent taste in music thus far 😉

I appreciate the long rant and the sentiment shown to the song. It's a good point, memories and feelings at the time they listen to this will be absolutely different. When it was released, or before his death, you could say you were listening for yourself. Now, you're specifically listening to Layne and witnessing his pain in song and his expression of that pain, like walking through a musical museum of sorts. In some ways, it's not even a song anymore, but a guide. That's how I see it anyway. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and commenting. :) If you have any recommendations, then I'll be sure to read up and potentially check out :)

@@RustySabita that's how I feel about 'Down in a Hole' now, I know it was written from Jerry's perspective for his then girlfriend but now I only hear it from the context of Layne and his struggles with addiction. They did such an amazing job with their songwriting allowing it to be thematically coherent while being open to interpretation. On the Alice-front, I don't see nearly enough reactions to their self-titled album. Admittedly that's become my favorite, because there's something about it being the end of that era for the band that makes it heavier and darker. 'Shame in You' would be my pick, that's Alice in Chains' most underrated song imo, especially because I think it's Layne harmonizing with himself rather than Jerry, so it's full on Layne lamenting. Alice's newer stuff is also damn good. The live version of 'Your Decision' from their MOPOP induction is stellar. On the harder side of the new stuff, 'Stone' doesn't get enough attention. Monster riff. Jerry's solo stuff is also great, I would definitely recommend the song 'Solitude' if you've never heard it from his Degradation Trip album. Outside of Alice, Deftones for sure, you could do the Alice/Deftones crossover people aren't so familiar with in 'Phantom Bride', killer Cantrell solo on that, hyper melodic. But anything Deftones is typically a good time, that's another band finding new life with the younger generations. Turns out writing interesting music based around melody and harmony rather than trends or gimmicks is the key to longevity, who knew? Besides the Beatles of course.

@dasninjastix I love down in a hole. I can't say I've listened to all their stuff - well, don't recognise them by name, at least, and I've listened to some Defrones, so I'll check more of their stuff out. Thank you for the recommendations. I'm not sure how frequently I'll post yet. Sometimes it takes a while to put my thoughts together, but I'll get some stuff sorted. :)

Sorry for blowing up your comments, but I dig your reactions. The vocal professionals tend to over-assess songs. I have a brain disorder called Synesthesia. My sensory input is processed in a way that blends my senses. I have the most rare form. Part of it is that I see music as much as I hear it. Each sound has a color and movement, and sometimes a personality. (I know it's odd). Describing my neurodivergant senses is like trying to describe colors to someone who has been blind since birth. Anyway, when I love a piece of music, it more than the way it sounds. So much more. I have some fukkin fantastic suggestions (according to me lol) Pear Jam "Black" about taking a young girl's virginity and then losing her love. Linkin Park "Sorry for Now" (it came out before my sister's fatal overdose and it felt like he was singing my pain). A homeless dude they called "Homeless Mustard" came on a NYC radio show straight off the street and sang the most incredible cover of "Creep" I've ever heard. So many more suggestions...

I think I know what you mean with the vocal pros. It's fine if people prefer true vocal analysis videos, but I prefer just see people enjoying themselves listening to new music, which is what I want to do. Listen to new music and share it with like-minded people who like the same and have fun in the video making process (Like my pisces video), add a bit of entertainment. :) Not be just a reactor, but an entertainer who reacts.
Im sorry to hear you go through that. I just had a bit of a google of it. I hope it doesn't get too severe for you. Does iut have any benefit when listen to music. Like add that extra feeling of immersion into the song?
I think Ive heard "Black", or "Sorry For Now", but if were talking Creep by Radiohead, then I have. I love that song!

@@RustySabita it’s strange for some people with synesthesia it is debilitating, and they can barely leave their house because everything is so offkilter for them. One of the hallmarks of having the disorder is that it starts with infinity and continues throughout your life. I’ve always enjoyed it. When I was a child, I would entertain myself by having my numbers play with each other six is a red male who has a crush on yellow seven, but she is in love with blue eight if that makes any kind of sense, I had a rough childhood and it was very self soothing. If somebody took it away for me right now, I would be lost. So it’s a very cool blessing for me. My dad had it as well. Another consistent symptom of synesthesia is having very good memory. Not just vivid, butfrom very very long before most people have memories. I remember breast-feeding like it was yesterday. Odd. I have some content on my channel about it as well as my sisters story.
