The scar tissue is minimal and depends on the doctor you go to. The metal can be removed with another minor and minimally invasive surgery 1 year after the initial jaw surgery. Many people do not experience any negative side effects aside from a rough recovery time. Whenever you do something like this, make sure you go to the best surgeon you can find, and go every the entire surgical process to have the highest chance of avoiding any and all nerve damage, etc.

You probably saw him too late. This only works when you’re really young, around age 8. Also it depends if you’re talking about the upper or lower jaw. The only thing facemask is really used for these days is to bring the upper jaw forward (reverse pull headgear).
@@Blackindian723 it's not very nice to assume things like that. I saw an orthodontist really young, plus I know these things only work in the peak of growing, otherwise I wouldn't have said this. Though the person in the video doesn't look that young? However, I thought this was about bringing the lower jaw forward, since I thought the Bentist pointed at his lower jaw and he talked about the breaking surgery, which often happens with the lower jaw. So thank you for mentioning the upper jaw, I will look into that, maybe I misunderstood that in the video.
@@veerlevanmerwijk7862 Sorry, didn’t mean to offend. In my opinion, the Bentist is way oversimplifying. Keep in mind, he’s not an orthodontist and therefore never even used headgear on his patients. Headgear for the lower jaw isn’t really a thing, and has been replaced by functional appliances these days (google Forsus appliance or Herbst) which can help bring the lower jaw forward and don’t require as much compliance as headgear. Also in my opinion it looks like this patient is too old for headgear and almost done with treatment. If I had to guess she had the headgear laying around from when she used it when she was younger and just wanted to make a video.
@@Blackindian723 thank you for your apology, sometimes things come off less nice in text than they are meant to, sorry for misunderstanding. I will Google those suggestions, you got me curious, thank you!
I’m the girl who had to have the surgery “later in life,” cause they slighted me on the headgear as a young one. It’s basically the headgear PLUS surgery when you have your face broken + rearranged 🤗
Honestly, eating is better (when I’m not in pain in the areas where my screws are placed) & my speech improved as well. BUT I have a considerable amount of pain 10yrs later.. It was a medically necessary procedure, but it didn’t come without long-term consequences. I have mixed reviews…
My moms cousin never got this done as a kid and ended up needing the surgery with both jaws broken. Her face was so swollen and puffy she had trouble keeping her eyes open. Eventually just the bottom of her face was puffy and it took over a month for swelling to go down any more but she desperately needed the surgery and is super happy now
I had a similar headgear but with only one pole in the middle. I thought it would make me cross-eyed😂😂😂 I mean, I'm happy I don't have an overbite now lol
Thank god my mom got my jaw fixed when I was still growing. It completely changed my face and I get a lot of compliments now on my jawline, when it used to be underdeveloped!
I have a 3mm underbite. I’ve had it all my life. I never asked my mom if the dentist wanted to fix it. I was a very difficult child though! Surgery that requires out to two years of recovery just to make my smile look normalized? Nope. No thanks. I’ll keep my weird smile!
🥹 i aspire to have your confidence- i have an 7-8 mm underbite. My parents are encouraging me to have a major surgery and i am still unsure. Going for a consultation next month, hopefully it goes well. If not- i will live w/ my underbite. Ain’t hurting no one or me

I literally had this for like, a year. ITS PURE TORTURE!!!!! The biggest problem is the fact that I had to wear this mainly in your sleep, and the rubber bands kept unattaching from the mask thing, and smack me in the face at 2 am. I was in fourth grade as well, before I learned how to ignore pain.
@Harley Quinn actually, with my experience, they just put an expander with hooks in your mouth, and you attach the rubber bands to the hooks on the expander then the hooks on the mask, and that’s it. Fair warning to those who are getting this device, but don’t have it yet, first few days to weeks you will have a sore jaw, but after a while the only real problem is the rubber bands unattaching from the mask and smacking you.
@Harley Quinn and also, with the expander, it kinda tickles when they put it in, but when they take mouth measurements, it kinda hurts. But hey, good luck with the mask!
@@That1_RUclipsrgood luck! Don't worry, the other option is much more worse and painful. It's better this way and it eventually gets better and is way less painful. I had Reversed headgear for about 8-12 months when I was 9. It didn’t feel the best but I did wear it every night and around the house. If you have one or are planning on getting on, it isn’t a big deal. I only had mine for I would say 9 months and I liked wearing it! I kind miss it lol
My sister had them. Annoying... yes. I asked her a few years ago and she said it was so worth all the annoyance! She had braces and slept with headgear. She has a beautiful smile now and she no longer has speech problems, eating issues, jaw pain and added cost of surgery. You will tank yourself later! You got this kiddo!
Now that I think about it, I might have to have the same braces treatment, because I have a severe overbite which kind of led my jaw to not “develop” properly? 😭😭 Please, I hope I’m just overthinking again…
My sister had one of those devices, she had a MASSIVE overbite. Like, her orthodontist took her case to a conference kind of massive. 2 other orthodontists said the only way to fix it was to wait until she was 16 and break her jaw. She ended up never needing surgery, but several years of braces and the headgear.
When I was looking for an orthodontist I came across 3 of them telling me that I had to get that thingy otherwise my teeth will never get fixed. I was absolutely scared bcuz when I searched pictures of it I saw how it looked like. Around a month after I went to an orthodontist who told me that there's no way that it's the only way bcuz in the end he made me some rubber bands and they work perfectly fine
This setup is actually just propelled by those same rubber bands. You hook the bands around the back (like you do with the bands that stay in your mouth) but you hook the other end around a little plastic bar or hook on the headgear frame. You only have to wear this at night or around the house. I preferred this to having that bands in my mouth all day and all night (except when you eat of course). I thought this was much easier and I only had pain for a little while in the morning, rather than every few days when new bands were put in.
@@giakolou2876 but if you can get it , seek for a good surgeon. I got a minor invasive orthognatic surgery, so it’s a better healing and less painful. but expensive. I recommend if you can get one, it’s very good and it’s changing my life
So I had a severe over bite, it was so severe that they didn’t even use rubber bands. They put in “the hinges!” *dun dun dun* aka they put in a Herbst appliance. Which looks like two big hinges inside your mouth and it just moved my jaw forward

My class 2 was never treated when I was a kid. Now with 26 (a couple months ago) I wore something called "Powerscope" that pushes your jaw forward. Absolute game-changer for me. Every dentist I went to told me only surgery for fix my jaw because I'm "too old" F that, my current Dentists (at an institute) are miraculous, the before and after is crazy in just 4 months from wearing that thing 🎉

@@galaxykitten6849I’m getting mine sometime soon. As scary as it sounds, having an underbite and not being able to bite into an apple just doesn’t sound like a good way to live. I’m team surgery if it’s really needed.
I had jaw surgery to fix my Underbite. Best decision I’ve ever made. It changed my life and increased my confidence 100%
My son had one as well. At 16 he went through a growth spurt that made his bottom jaw just jut out big time. It didn't change his face to much but it sure made it difficult for him to eat. He said...best decision ever!! These contraptions weren't even an option for him. Have surgery or look like a cojo salmon or bulldog.
I had herb appliance, idk what it even did
I did it too! Most painful but worth it surgery. It’s been over 8 years now and one of my closest friends just did hers too.
I want it so bad but my insurance doesn't cover it... My jaws are awful and I am an adult now.
My dad had that done and my ortho gave me that option to fix my underbite. My dad said no because it was the worst experience of his life and doesn’t want me to go through it
Damn I thought my headgear at night was bad
I can’t even move my jaw back that much
I swear dentists are secret psychopaths waiting to tell your parents you need this 10,000$ torture thing

Why did my orthodontist not suggest anything like this instead of trying to pressure me to get a surgery when I am a teenager, just before I would turn 18. I already had huge outside braces for a few years, I could've handled this too!
I get what you are saying, I also think he is simplifying to keep it understandable for the audience and to keep it short for the video. But I agree that he's missing some points here. I will Google those suggestions, you got me curious, thank you!

SHE REALLY SAID 🤐
I’m the girl who had to have the surgery “later in life,” cause they slighted me on the headgear as a young one. It’s basically the headgear PLUS surgery when you have your face broken + rearranged 🤗
Did it hurt much ? How about now ? Do u have any side effects or pain from it now?
REARRANGED 😭
how much was it? I'm considering it
Honestly, eating is better (when I’m not in pain in the areas where my screws are placed) & my speech improved as well.

Eventually just the bottom of her face was puffy and it took over a month for swelling to go down any more but she desperately needed the surgery and is super happy now
Bro still got that brace on his tooth.
I had a similar headgear but with only one pole in the middle. I thought it would make me cross-eyed😂😂😂 I mean, I'm happy I don't have an overbite now lol
So it is helpful right?😔
I got mine tdy and im scared and confused abt it not been helpful😔

Thank god my mom got my jaw fixed when I was still growing. It completely changed my face and I get a lot of compliments now on my jawline, when it used to be underdeveloped!

I have a 3mm underbite. I’ve had it all my life. I never asked my mom if the dentist wanted to fix it. I was a very difficult child though! I remember needing gas at the dentist to keep calm and still enough for them to do ANYTHING. Now as an adult….psh I can eat and that’s all that matters to me!
Ain’t hurting no one or me
@@fullofkkI’m with you guys! I’ve got a severe underbite. I’m getting mine done. I’m scared, of course. But it’s really not for vanity reasons. I can’t speak properly, eat properly, or breathe properly because of it. Get a good surgeon. That’s the important part.
I'm having it at 4 months I'm so scared wAtching all these videos bro
So what if it looks a bit weird, it does its job and reduces pain greatly. Don't worry, just keep calm, it won't be that bad Insh-Allah Ameen. Allahuma Barik (may God bless you)
@@HarleyQuinn-gu1knIdts. Just make sure u have a good and honest orthodontist who isn't after money and actually knows his/her job. Leave the rest to God, it'll get better eventually. Plus I've seen people who had severe underbite and were glad they got medical treatment cause it also effected their health and it also helped them. Don't worry it's not that bad, it will hurt in the beginning but it'll get better Insh-Allah Ameen and soon everything will be fine and even better. And i don't know much about dentistry but they won't drill holes inside your skull and only in some cases do they add or subtract bones.
i had the option to do this with my underbite, but they told me they werent sure it would work 100%. because my underbite doesnt damage my teeth or anything i could skip and possibly get a jaw surgury as an adult.
Bro my brother just has a clear brace that pulls his jaw forward😭
I had Reversed headgear for about 8-12 months when I was 9. It didn’t feel the best but I did wear it every night and around the house. If you have one or are planning on getting on, it isn’t a big deal. I only had mine for I would say 9 months and I liked wearing it! I kind miss it lol

Fr bro e
My sister had them. Annoying... yes. I asked her a few years ago and she said it was so worth all the annoyance! She had braces and slept with headgear. She has a beautiful smile now and she no longer has speech problems, eating issues, jaw pain and added cost of surgery.
You will tank yourself later! You got this kiddo!
The dentist really made sure she didn’t lose her mewing streak
New fear unlocked:having these
Now that I think about it, I might have to have the same braces treatment, because I have a severe overbite which kind of led my jaw to not “develop” properly? 😭😭 Please, I hope I’m just overthinking again…
My sister had one of those devices, she had a MASSIVE overbite. Like, her orthodontist took her case to a conference kind of massive. 2 other orthodontists said the only way to fix it was to wait until she was 16 and break her jaw. She ended up never needing surgery, but several years of braces and the headgear.
is the headgear an all day thing, or just at night?
@@Itzli777 In her case, she had to wear it 23 hours a day for a while, then 16, then 12, then 8.

I HAVE THE SAME THING CALLD A CROSS BITE

I got mine tody and im scared of it
Im also confused it it will help or not😢
A kid in my school has this thing
Orthognatic surgery was my option , it wasn’t so bad ! In two months I was eating normally and opening my mouth normally too
Any side effects? Do u still have any pain ?
@@giakolou2876 just sensibility into my lower lip and when I’m too stressed some pain in face, but it gets better after calming down

So I had a severe over bite, it was so severe that they didn’t even use rubber bands. They put in “the hinges!” *dun dun dun* aka they put in a Herbst appliance. Which looks like two big hinges inside your mouth and it just moved my jaw forward
In 2003, I was left with severe TMJD in Pleasanton, California, from an orthodontist. I still have chronic pain in my tmjs where I was on heavy pain medication. I also had around 9 different appliances that splints, physical therapy, and numerous wannabe tmj dentists. I'm extremely hesitant about orthodontics with my kids😮😮.
Goofy ahh Reverse Bear Trap💀
I had that. I had to wear it every night, not at day. It really hurts. It left me a scar on my chin because it bleed. I hope I can just get invisaline I really don't wanna go through a 2nd round of braces. I got them off last summer btw
My class 2 was never treated when I was a kid.
Now with 26 (a couple months ago) I wore something called "Powerscope" that pushes your jaw forward. Absolute game-changer for me. Every dentist I went to told me only surgery for fix my jaw because I'm "too old"
F that, my current Dentists (at an institute) are miraculous, the before and after is crazy in just 4 months from wearing that thing 🎉
