I used to box, but when Bruce Lee launched Kung Fu it was no longer cool to just punch things, you had to kick them too. I joined a local karate club. Training religiously, I would buy combat magazine every month. Sensei Ticky Donovan was always in it. He does not mention it in this video, but as far as my memory recalls, he was open wieght world champion five times. He established Ishinryu, after leaving Kyokushinkai. His students, Euguene Codrington and Tyrone Whyte became their wieght world champions too. I have always looked up to him as a karate teacher. Other names of that era, Steve Arneil, Brian 'Dicky' Dowler, Terry O'Neil, Bobby Poynton. I wanted to train with Tatsuo Suzuki, but could not afford the travel to his classes or Sensei Kanazawa. Later I moved onto Ju Jutsu, which I still practice today. The 70s and 80s were a golden era for martial arts in this country. As is mentioned in this video, we excelled. Great to watch this video.

Loved Ticky. Did a couple of his weekend courses at the Sobell, and his week long summer course at Clacton in 1974 I think.
I trained under Meiji Suzuki. I went on to attain 5th Dan...

I remember i purchased some second hand copies of Traditional Karate Magazine in India in 1990, when i use to be a teenager. That use to be the time when i was mesmerised by Bruce Lee and use to read about different martial arts all the day.
I hailed from a very remote area in North India near the Himalayas. There was no martial school in my town. finally a Taek-won-do school opened in my town and i was lucky to get trained for 1.5 years. I left the school but kept practising on my own.
Ticky Donovan, Bay logan, Terry O Niel and dickie Wu use to be the most popular characters of that magazine.
Good to see this video after 3 decades. I still posses those 30 year old Traditional Karate magazines.

Many years ago I did a weeks course at Crystal Palace. All the great shotokan guys there .Enoeda .Kanazawa etc .I met Ticky Donovan very briefly when I was guzzling a big bottle of water after one particularly hard teaching by the Japanese when he asked for a swig of water .The training was so hard you could not really eat anything , and I used to bring about 3 big bottles of water each day .Date was 8 9 75 to 12 9 75 European course.I received my 2nd Brown belt at end of the course. Also attended a weeks course ( summer course ) 12 5 75 to 16 5 75. Happy days.

Thanks missed that will try looking on iPlayer next.
I started 74. And trained with most of the England team.
As guest sensi would take sessions. Plus the Liverpool red triangle club
Was only 10 miles away. And most hung out there. Maybe my son can see
How we where when we where young. And not the broken old man he sees know
