I’m from the Altoona area. I remember when I was a kid when they were decommissioning the caboose. To Conrail’s credit instead of scrapping them, you could buy them at the time I believe in the early 90s for $500 and the cost to move them which they could be put on a lowboy truck. for that reason around here, you’ll find them in some pretty interesting places some many miles from any railroad tracks.

Spent many years living near the tracks. Commuter trains are easy. It's when the freight trains come through that life would get exciting. Sometimes they would cause the house to shake and things would fall. Lots of good places to see trains in this one. Altoona looks like a cute little town.
Glad RJ is doing better. Hope he is able to participate in your event tomorrow.

It’s crazy what you can get used to!! I used to live adjacent to freight train/passenger train/trolly line…which was immediately besides a 10 lane freeway and directly under an international airports flight path.. where you could see the rivets on the belly of the airplane bottoms as they flew over!! All that and the houses were all well over a million bucks! 😂 the trains and freeways become white noise after a while.

Part of the movie Unstoppable with Chris Pine was filmed along Washington Ave. at W 13th St. The town in the movie was called Arklow instead of Tyrone, but when they show maps of the railroad you see the name Tyrone. Glad RJ got better the next day he might have suffered from heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

Very enjoyable video. Good to know your friend is feeling better. 👍
I am in the UK, "Scotland". I used to drive trains. There are not many Diesel-Electric locomotives left at my old workplace. They brought the overhead wires in after I retired. So there are electric locos parked where the Diesel-Electric ones were.
I always found the Diesel-Electric Locos had more grip than the Electric-Locos because they were heavier and had fewer wheelspin on gradients.
Altoona is a very peaceful place. 🤠👍
I meant to say that the car at that car meeting was a Morris Minor Traveler. When I was a wee boy the guy who lived across from me had one. The wooden surround looked great.

Not a looker from the outside, we almost decided it was not much of a food place and looked for another restaurant. But what a surprise once inside, was not whet we expected, and very busy! Was a great place for a cold brew, super and fun to read tavern menu. Very good food and service. And the kitchen is open late!!!

Great video for us train buffs. I’ve been to Horseshoe Curve, Galitzin but not stopped at Altoona. Must go there now.
Felt so bad for RJ, I’ve been there, it’s the worst.
For those in Eastern PA you can see the same amount of train traffic just west of Harrisburg at the Enola Overlook and the worlds famous Rockville Bridge. It’s the same NS / former PRR Mainline. Enola yards are huge with engine shops, engine wash bays, and lots of freight cars. Many engines, some still in CR Blue. The British car show was a nice surprise as was the RC track. The woody was a Morris Minor built in England probably 50’s. I have a new DJI Pocket -2 I got for a steal. I’m going to try it on Thomas at Strasburg this weekend. The low light on the Pocket 3 was amazing.

Your visits to the Altoona area are always excellent. The train track going down the middle of the street was a tight squeeze, but it is really cool. It was fun to see the cabooses and the night sky when you were on the bridge was gorgeous! The mural and the architecture of the buildings are incredible, and I agree the church is magnificent! What a nice scooter ride you two had. The combination mail car would look so neat fixed up as maybe a restaurant or something. I remember when you asked us if we would buy the house next to the turntable area and I would definitely love that house, I could listen to trains all day and night, your idea of a deck would be neat. I'm so sorry that RJ got sick, and I hope he is feeling better now, vertigo is awful! Beautiful photos and an awesome video JP, thank you! 💙

A friendly New York Central Conductor back in the 60s explained the conversion to bay window cabooses: Avoiding constant injuries from workers falling off high cupola seating during hard braking and “slack action”. RR Union wanted improved safety and management was tiring of workers comp pay-outs from these falls.

There is nothing like laying on your bed drifting off to lala land with the motion of the train and the sound of the wheels and the whistle blowing. I love all the old buildings in Altoona. They run M/W/F and I normally see them around like 8 AM. I believe the NS local that goes into the yard (C42) is daily. I host a radio feed from my house a few miles out from Tyrone on broadcastify. Monday, Wensday, Friday is normally the days they run but sometimes they run extra. ....Hi Jay!...Brilliant video as usual, right up our street, the wife and I love a train!!. We both wish RJ well of course. Sadly, here in the UK, we have nothing like you have there, although we do have the Deltic, British Rail Class 55 built in '61 and '62. You like a loco, so please check them out on YT, they make one hell of a noise!!!!.Loved the car show. Nice to see a good representation of BMC / British Leyland vehicles. The English 'woodie' was a Morris Minor 1000 Traveller as it was known here. A very popular car in it's time. The 'ash' frame was integral to the vehicles rigidity and they rotted terribly leading to structural failure. There were, and still are, repair kits available, there are still plenty in use here today!!! Owned a 1971 example myself at one point. The vehicle you saw was from 1966/67 from seeing the UK reg plate. Edited; have just run a UK vehicle check, the car was registered in May 1967. The 'road tax' we have here in the UK was last due in April 2011. Looking at that, the car must have been exported to the USA before then. The car was produced from October 1953 to April 1971, making the one I owned one of the last. On hindsight, a '71 Mustang would have been a better bet!!!! Was also the proud owner of a MGB GT, 1977, black in colour, chrome wire wheels and a full length 'Webasto' sun roof, happy days, long gone now. Sorry to rabbit on, but you did say if anybody knew......Best wishes from here in the UK.

Glad RJ got checked out. Vertigo is awful. RJ's energy seemed off when he first showed up, not his usual self. Hope he is doing better and doesn't have a recurrence. Great video JP!

??? JP - Did u rent scooters in Altoona or do you have your own? I'm getting long in the tooth and walking is getting difficult at times, maybe a scooter would be helpful??? Anyone have any suggestions? Maybe they make a scooter that climbs stairs so I can enjoy the HS Curve again. 🤣 Vehicular has been down for years and don't expect it to return in my lifetime. Enjoy your videos, waiting on part 2...👍👍👍👍👍

Matt bought his scooter off me and I own the other one. I reviewed them under my ebike & scooter playlist. I do with the curve had an easier way up.
