I live in Chicago. I believe the set back isn't just due to the Pandemic, students in underfunded schools and poverty sticken communities were already behind due to lack of resources. The Pandemic just pulled off the bandaid and revealed the inequality of education. Those in wealthier communities had at least one if not both parents stay at home and access to technology. While those who lived in poor areas struggled to have laptops and internet/Wifi so students could connect with teachers. Also cramming in extra hours of classwork and homework isn't going to help either. Students will become overwhelmed. We need to find ways to recruit more classroom Assistants and Diverse Learning teachers to help students. Teacher shortage is due to burnout and lack of support financially and mentally.

We can get back on track if we teach what's necessary instead of complex math problems we never use.

As a HS teacher, I will verify we are required to teach all aspects of the subject that the student will be expected to learn. The 'necessary' aspect you are talking about are skills gotten from an executive functioning class or skills a good teacher can provide to a student as they navigate a class. One of the biggest issues I see is that more parents than before are expecting us to essentially raise their child and be the one who teaches them 'necessary' skills and values, however we are harshly criticized and often attacked when we try to enforce a sense of responsibility in these kids/enforce consequences for actions that are not acceptable for school. I see a lot of students explicitly tell me that they don't care to learn something and when I try to reason with them that they can at least learn the skill of patience from it, they often refer to something their parent said and use it to justify why they don't need to do work. Do you see the issue there? If you want teachers to teach what is necessary, then let us educate your kids to be well-rounded and knowledgable citizens and be a support system for the teachers. We are human beings too and we dedicate more time than you'd think to giving your children the best experience in school. The attitude that "I wont use this in life, so let me ignore the class and be disruptive" is disrespectful to other classmates, the teacher, and it reinforces an idea to the student that they can't at least benefit from understanding a concept. I hear from students a lot of parents sharing this ideology with their kids, and so it makes sense.
My question to you- do you have kids or is your comment coming from having a bad school experience where the right teacher was not in place to support you? Whichever is the case, I am sorry you feel so negatively about how educators try to do their job, but the new generation of educators are dedicated to an entirely different mission and want to revise the system... so again, please remain supportive of teachers.

What do you mean by necessary? Everything is necessary. Learning math is not solely to learn math, but to help students to develop thinking skills and abilities, to reason logically which will help them in their future in the real world and connect the synapsis nerves in the brain. Also you can’t make up for learning loss of basically two years that easily added on top of this “many” kids in the US are 3 -4 grade level below what they suppose to be, that’s 5-6 yr below grade level. It’s not that easy to get them back on track with that much behind. Sadly and honestly, I don’t think it is even possible to make that many years of leaning loss back by the time they graduate from high school. Which means the high school diploma really means nothing and shows nothing.

When I was in HS, i used to believe that I would never use any of the math that i was learning because I was certain that i wanted to be a musician. Luckily i still paid attention in high school. So when I decided to change my major in college, I had already had the background to do well. Now I’m getting a PhD in mechanical engineering.
Interests often change, especially in college. It’s better to provide students with a well rounded education so that they can make an informed decision on what career path suits them best.

      @ King beef
The biggest problem of all is the changes school system. Students are rarely being held accountable for their actions. They get away with almost everything and their parents make weak excuses for their behaviors.
That’s the real problem. Educators are forced to spend 70% of their time managing difficult behavior, and by The end of the day, there’s no time for actual academics and learning.

  • @jjc6530

Isn’t that what research is also showing that the future of education is online? Where students are going to be educated from someone from another country by another teacher? Getting rid of brick and mortar classrooms, because of future technology growth and advances. A lot of research is flawed.
The problem is not that remote learning don’t work, it actually does work. It’s because children nowadays are bored easily and not disciplined to focus on academics and see the importance of it. Easily distracted. Parents don’t support and enforce discipline and focus also, and teach kids about putting efforts to push through despite difficulties and challenges. Same with life, there’s more obstacles then solutions. Parents don’t teach them that. Helicopter parents. Failure is not a bad thing to learn from.

    • @mariee.5912

Wow, do you have children. My children sat long hours doing school work and yes they're disciplined and they're supported. They hated it and it wasn't because the reasons you mentioned. It's because they need social interaction. It's not just discipline and attention there's more. Have you tried it. I took online classes and it was just 1 hour and then I did my work. Now, sitting down for the lenght of a school day for a child is way too much and it not related to discipline or attention. The online teaching for young kids is crazy. Judging is so easy, right?

I disagree with the news saying remote learning has a negative impact on students. When students are in school, some students are disruptive and talking loudly in the classroom when the teacher is teaching. Also, students are focusing on seeing there friends in school or cutting class. In my opinion there are other reasons to why students are not learning.

It's not remote learning, as a teacher I feel it is the poverty and stress the pandemic caused ! If parents didn't have work there would have been less of a learning loss. Many children were left alone all day with a screen the issue is so much deeper than what this news story is talking about 😂

It's not just that. Even if the mom was at home, its difficult to recreate the school structure. That makes it hard to keep the kids focused. That creates more power struggles between parent and kid who already do that throughout the day over behavior and chores.

There are a couple of good thing about online learning for teachers. Lack of behavior issues for students thanks to the power of the “mute” button and kids being in their own separate houses.

I think maybe there should be more diverse methods of reaching different students and targeting their weaknesses. Also, I've noticed there's less educational television for older kids than the previous generations when it came to PBS programming. I think programs such as Between The Lions, Reading Rainbow, Cyber Chase, etc.... were a big help when it came to fulfilling targets and grasping educational concepts in a fun manner. I also recall the use of more software/ edutainment in the 90s and early 2000s, such as Jump Start and The Learning Company. Now that we have apps there should be more edutainment programs, but sometimes it's very hard to find apps that match the needs of a student.

This is a good thing it sounds bad but this is a good thing and I’ll tell you why because of this we can end no child left behind. It shouldn’t take a tenth grade or eleventh grade teacher to tell parents there child is terrible at English or math. When the issue could have been noticed in the first grade and the child would have been only 1 year behind the children of their own age. But instead they are nine years behind in English because the problem wasn’t addressed earlier. Also common core could be finally put to an end you saw the data point it increased 20 points since the common core/no child left behind started which was two decades ago. If we just went back to the way English and Math were originally taught then parents would be able to help their children on simple things like how to multiply up and down kids nowadays use a five step box method to do multiplication.

I agree. Somehow they think giving the kids more support in learning will help them grow more intellectually. These kids are well capable to learn and struggle on their own. Learning is a craft. It takes patience and common sense to master a skill.

Of course it was gonna have a negative impact. Online learning is hard because it requires more independence. But also it emphasizes poverty gaps. If you didn't have access to tech or your parents weren't there to help guide you because they had to work that will obviously have a negative impact. Kids that were already behind naturally would continue to struggle more because they were missing out on all the extra support and manipulatives they would normally have access to in class.
But would you prefer your kid behind or sick / dead.
These gaps for most students are already closing significantly with just one year back in the classroom. It will take extra work though and teachers can't be the only ones putting in the effort, they never should be. Parents are going to need to step up as much as possible as well. Shut off the kids screen and read with them. Play math games. Force them to practice face to face communication and conflict resolution by playing cooperative games. Practice fine motor skills and printing with daily journals or arts and crafts. There are a million ways to help build skills.

Remote learning often leads students to an increase of depression. Many teachers were not trained to be virtual teachers, so they are not skilled to teach in a virtual setting.
