I absolutely love Gilgamesh in zero, and how he ties into the real gilgamesh myh. Despite being overwhelmingly villanous he was the most successful king, who brought the greatest happiness, success and longevity to his kingdom out of the three. Saber’s britain fell shortly after her death though the myth would be drawn on by its successor states, and iskander’s empire was doomed from the start by design; both being based on expansionist war and without the structured succession that would provide longevity but hinder ambition. Gil’s also inherently hypocritical even though he is the most straightforward, because his myth (in and out of fate) involves him coming to accept his limitations later in life and ruling more for the sake of his people. This version of Gil is too arrogant to understand it yet but he drew closer to the other two, especially iskandr, later in life. Also he’s just such a fun little dickhead every time he’s on screen it’s hard not to like him.
When I first watched Fate/Zero as a teenager I was all in on the Iskander train but as I grew up I really started to appreciate Saber. Not only because she was the person who stepped up and did everything to save a country that was on the brink of destruction be it foreign invaders (Picts, Saxons, etc) or internal strife (Morgan or Vortigern) but because I feel like the leader of a nation, the person in authority should be duty bound to do everything they can for their people in exchange for their power. That's part of the tragedy of Camelot because despite all these amazing heroic knights who have come together (basically a group of superheroes) for a common goal but it sadly couldn't last. With many of the Knights blaming themselves (Lancelot himself in F/Z despises what he did and so chases after Saber so she can hopefully punish him) and this includes Saber. Personally if I had to live under any of these Kings I would most definitely choose Saber because its crystal clear she cares about the common man and would do anything to help them. With Iskander while super charismatic and would be super fun to be around doesn't feel like a king I would like to be under. The man first and foremost was a conqueror, its even a part of of his title. He's as warmonger who created a great empire and if he had it his way would have tried conquering India and beyond. Sure he was more then that but its somewhat hard to remember that detail when most of life was dedicated to military conquest. Sure we find out his wish for the grail is incarnation (getting a proper body) but he's going to use that to basically start WW3 and even propositioned Gilgamesh so they can conquer the stars/universe together. While the idea of going to space sounds awesome I wouldn't want to do it under the guy would probably try to start a war with the first alien civ we meet.
I agreed. Saber is a truly king in every aspect. While Rider is more like an emperor conqueror that want to expand his territory. This is like compare the Roman Empire vs the Mongolian Empire, as the former was more succesful than the latter.
The king is the embodiment of their kingdom gil being the golden king because Babylon or uruk is a diamond in the rough a miracle the propelled humanity to what the ancient people could only think of a divine abilities while iskander was the king of conquerer because he is the embodiment of his kingdoms undying dream and it was not to rule but to conquer to continue pushing forwards while saber is the kingdoms embodiment of the ideal ruler something closer to the savior closer to the angels than humanity since the knights of the round was often sighted as the ideal chivalric people they're should exceed that
When it comes to the king debate in fate I think iskandar wins mostly on the fact dispute being an older king in history his existence not kingdom is ever in question meanwhile Arthur is a myth. In my own mind and ideas for Writings a true king is one who is followed regardless of position. Who holds the hearts and minds around them by living truly as themselves not through force or divine right. If you walk forward and people follow, you stand as king.
I love fate zero and fate so so much it’s my favorite anime set of shows and even the ilylia prisma series which I despise has a fantastic prequel movie fate oath under snow and has cool continuation in the prisma series
while I would say fate/zero anime somewhat makes it look like it doesn't want you to think any of the 3 kings is wrong or right it is more clear in the novel of zero and in the main series FSN as well as other spinoffs that saber kingship is very much considered wrong it is called wrong presented as wrong and is the reason her kingdome failed fate/zero in a way tells you its wrong twice as kiritsugu is identicle to what saber was in life a cold emotionless person who decides based on logic and the best course to victory distancing himself from others so not only are you told saber herself was wrong but a man who is exactly like her is treated as a fool and ends up failing as he was wrong her character arc in zero is to realize that she was the reason her kingdome failed her character arc in FSN is to let go of said self destructing flawed self of duty from her kingship
ok so another mistake on saber here her kingdome fell before her death not after she hasn't even died yet due to her contract with alaya and the entire reason she had said contract is because of the falling of her kingdome this is a really big mistake
You know despite saber wish being wrong it just shows she more of a hero than a King and that one of reason I admire her character.

while I would say fate/zero anime somewhat makes it look like it doesn't want you to think any of the 3 kings is wrong or right
it is more clear in the novel of zero and in the main series FSN as well as other spinoffs that saber kingship is very much considered wrong
it is called wrong presented as wrong and is the reason her kingdome failed
fate/zero in a way tells you its wrong twice as kiritsugu is identicle to what saber was in life a cold emotionless person who decides based on logic and the best course to victory distancing himself from others so not only are you told saber herself was wrong but a man who is exactly like her is treated as a fool and ends up failing as he was wrong
her character arc in zero is to realize that she was the reason her kingdome failed
her character arc in FSN is to let go of said self destructing flawed self of duty from her kingship
ok so another mistake on saber here
her kingdome fell before her death not after she hasn't even died yet due to her contract with alaya and the entire reason she had said contract is because of the falling of her kingdome
