Ya he looks nothing like the characters he plays most of the time. My Left Foot, Gangs Of New York, There Will be Blood, Lincoln. He was more recognizable in In The Name Of The Father, The Boxer, The Ballard Of Jack and Rose and Phantom Thread.
I can't see Daniel Plainview in this man whatsoever, just shows what an incredible actor he is that he change and make himself seem like a completely different person
There’s a very controlled intensity to the way both he and Daniel Plainview speak. (And work, actually.) But Day-Lewis is considerate and connects with the person he’s speaking to. Plainview is always inside himself and his ambition.
Invenum of all time! Go back. British film. Debut in America earned first Oscar “ My Left Foot “ indie film. Amazing human being. Gangs of New York as well. Never gets old. Lincoln paradox in those two cinema classics. The Boxer! 😱 Oh my The Crucible! In the Name of the Father! 😇😭😤 Last of the Mohegan,s Oh this list is long and every single one of them is well worth the viewing!!! WILL THE REAL Daniel Day Lewis Pease Go out on top was the smartest move ever made! 🙇♀️ I bow! Genius! 🤴 Yes! Leave the seat for another... he’s got the most nominations and golden trophies in history and the funny thing... HE COULD CARE LESS. He’s an artist! Oh thank heavens for @danieldaylewis #danieldaylewis #DDL
the difference between his real and his film personas is astounding...all that capability of transformation they always grant deNiro and alikes, HE really has it, and his characters, like plainview or bill cutting, are really intense, not just superficial...the best living actor i know
This guy is the opposite of people like Tom Cruise and George Clooney who essentially just play themselves constantly. The closest thing to DDL is Christian Bale and Gary Oldman.
+TheExPresidentsAreSurfers I think either DDL or Matthew McConaughey should have played Hugh Glass in The Revenant. Leo was good, but those two actors would have done a lot better I think. Too bad he's too old now to play the Joker; he'd do amazing things with that role.
I find that there's a difference in skill set between being a "movie star" (like Cruise and Clooney are) and being a method/character actor of the highest caliber, like DDL (and Bale and Oldman). Movie stars are, in some capacity, always playing themselves, while the character actors almost disappear into their roles.
The way he talks about Plainview shows that he really becomes his characters: he doesn't say "in plainview's mind", he says "in my mind" ... That says everything
I can't believe I just saw this film... Son of a b*tch! This was both terrifying and _mesmerizing!_ I've been told again and again how awesome D.D. Lewis is, but I haven't really seen any of his movies-just an Oscar speech he once gave. But man, if you sit through this 2+ hour film, you'll realize what an incredible actor this guy is. It's like he's not even acting... Not a single false note, ever. Heath Ledger had nothing on him, but I must say, just as I got lost in Ledger's Joker character, I was similarly completely captivated and mystified by Lewis' character in this movie. ...unlike anything I've seen before. (I only mention Heath because D.D. Lewis also dedicated his Oscar in that speech to him.)
Has anyone seen MY LEFT FOOT, he is brilliant in that too, also IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER. He is so brilliant. You know that he looses himself in his role because in reality he is so different from the characters he plays. That what real acting is. Some American actors can learn from this.
What I loved about this movie the most was the fact that I come from an oil family, my grandfather is a wellsite supervisor from days gone by who looks like plainview, has his mannerisms, and who anytime I spend time with seems to exude this dangerous callous energy of white mans old world. I couldn't beleive how authentically tough, profoundly bigoted, and viciously realistic my grandfather was when I would go see him as a youngster. Day-Lewis made me feel that same way when I saw this movie. Masterful.
it's literally impossible for me to imagine how a man can go from what i just saw in the video to the man i saw in the film There Will be Blood. and that is a sign of an absolutely incredibly skilled actor
amazing acting, with that being said, as someone who is now convinced that many actors are under spirit possession when playing there roles, it makes his answers, especially that last one, make so much sense.
Without a doubt one of the greatest actors of our time. He chooses his roles and puts his soul into them. His performance in There Will Be Blood floored me. I was thinking about it for days. I still find myself going back and looking up scenes. I think it should have won the Oscar for Best Film instead of No Country For Old Men that year.
there will be blood is one of the most great movies of our time, the cast, the acting, the directing, the photography, the script... really great movie
The scene in TWBB where he looks upon the firey oil strike which illuminates his faces gives me goosebumps. I loved this movie and ALL of his work. Entirely
He's taken acting to another level which is more mentally and physically taxing then anything before it. I hope others can continue this after him but its doubtful.
His performance in this film was astounding,he WAS Plainview,a true great,it would have been a sin if he didn't get that oscar,it's still scary how he isn't actually Plainview, they are so different from each other.
If you told me Daniel Day Lewis has someone dub his lines in movies, I would believe you. His voice is nothing like Bill The Butcher's. Tone, pronunciation, pitch, tempo...not to mention the entire accent. Remarkable, really.
I've seen some criticisms about this film and how they're saying it's a disgusting film. I don't get it. It's a like-for-like of how it was back then. I enjoy looknig into the history of the oil industry in American back in the late 1800s, and think it's spot on in the movie, espeically how DDL was acting. Cut-throat, ruthless, giving everything they had, not for themselves, but, for the success of their corporations. Brilliant and epic. My favourite actor, hands down.
I love this Daniel Day-Lewis in the interview, but I'm jealous of the Daniel Day-Lewis in the movie There Will Be Blood. He is the eldest son of the God of Acting!!
even when he talks about his character or says the same words Plainview said like Quail for example, it's like he's talking about an entirely different person.. but it was HIM all along! His performance was like a magic trick. No one knows how or what he had to do to disappear into Plainview and everyones amazed
He is an incredible actor, a dying breed. I read that he lives in character for months at a time using whatever accents and wearing period clothing as well.
Have to agree with the majority. For such a complex character these questions were fairly simple. And for such a pivotal acting role, it would be nice to have more info about DDL's means, especially as he seems so willing to talk about it in this clip. I love how he refers to Plainview as "me" and "I", shows how much he actually became that guy. And from the sounds of it, he has had trouble letting go of the character.
DDL is a kind of person that will be declared "insane" if he lived centuries ago... i mean that as a compliment. he's a GENIUS!!!! just with how he speaks, the interviewer ask simple questions, and yet DDL answer it like he's life depended on it. he choose his words carefully. such a gentlemen, the best actor today(sorry Sean, as great as you are today, DDL still beats you)
Best Actor of his generation, by quite some way. In a relatively weak generation of leading men DDL stands out as one of the few who is willing to completley immerse himself in a role.
Just unbelivable. Somewhere Brando is shaking his head in amazment. Greatest living actor, bar none! Just a shame like the wonderful director Terrence Malick he only does a movie once a blue moon. That being said, big props for not selling out like some of the greats, and just make dog after dog for the money.
Mark my words, if I ever have the opportunity to sit down with this man, one of the few actors that thinks of his role in the world with enough perspective to say something like, "You've used yourself up. That's what you're there to do. You've nourished yourself; filled yourself with the possibility of something." - I will not ask him if he thinks his character was similar to another in a film. I will tell him thank you.
@brushstrokesrock Possibly the best of his generation. If you watch him in "Gangs of New York", "In the Name of the Father", and "There Will be Blood", it's almost hard to imagine you're watching the same guy in all three.
so sweet and down-to-earth would love to have him as a neighbour hard to believe that a soft spoken man like him can play psychos like bill the butcher!
@shaboopie12 I agree, he deserved DOUBLE of whatever he made from that film. Then again, DDL is too classy to be caught up in money. His motivation is to contribute to his craft.
At the end he explained his intense method acting. Really interesting, since it's something one have heard of him being famous for: not getting out of his charachter on the set. A great actor.
@TheGardenEscape so true. Hes very picky about the roles he takes but when he takes one, he fully engrosses himself in the character. Ive read he doesnt break charcacter on set either. Hes truly a master. I havent seen My Left Foot. I gotta see that one.
@leetface2 well what do you expect? He spends a year preparing, living and breathing the role and the next year filming it and whilst filming it, never dropping out of character. For this role he lived by himself away from his wife and children, for Gangs of New York he refused to take medication when coming down with pneumonia because "it didn't fit the period" and also in My Left Foot he stayed in a wheelchair and developed a bit of a hunchback. The crew had to always carry and feed him
It must have been a mind fuck to work with him in this film. One minute he's a maniacal oil tycoon, end scene and he's back to humble, almost shy, regular daniel
@Kotsudaira Only one of his parents is Irish...his dad (who was born in Ireland but raised in England). Daniel's mother is ENglish of Jewish/Eastern European background. After he moved to ireland in 93, DDL obtained dual Irish and English citizenship.
It’s incredible how you can just look at his face and see absolutely none of Daniel plainview. He truly is the greatest actor of all time
Ya he looks nothing like the characters he plays most of the time.
Daniel Plainview has to be in him. That's an actors job, to find yourself in a character, without judgement.
Me niether, incredible.
Interviewer: "At the end of the day are you completely drained?"
DDL: "DRRAINAGE!!!"
*SLLLLLUUUUUURP*
Good one
drain gang drain gang
"Do YOU understand? That's more to the point, do YOU understand? You can sit down again"
Even when he's being himself in an interview he had me captivated. I'll go ahead and call him the best living actor today.
nelson kaboots Agreed
And deniro
There’s a very controlled intensity to the way both he and Daniel Plainview speak. (And work, actually.)
But Day-Lewis is considerate and connects with the person he’s speaking to.
Plainview is always inside himself and his ambition.
Ever
Of all time? I think so living actor Heath ledger could’ve been close
I'd never seen an interview with him and holy shit, he absolutely transforms into his characters
His answer to the last question explains exactly why he's such an amazing actor.
Best I've ever seen.
He is truly a master of his craft. I applaude you Mr. Day-Lewis, for all that you have done for the artistry of film.
It is just amazing to hear him talk and to really see that he is NOTHING like this character. Simply the best living actor today. Hands down.
One of the greatest actors active today
...of all time IMO. DDL's best movie again, IMO
Invenum of all time! Go back. British film. Debut in America earned first Oscar “ My Left Foot “ indie film. Amazing human being. Gangs of New York as well. Never gets old. WILL THE REAL Daniel Day Lewis Pease
Go out on top was the smartest move ever made! 🙇♀️ I bow! Genius!
All British Actors.... interesting.
+TheExPresidentsAreSurfers I think either DDL or Matthew McConaughey should have played Hugh Glass in The Revenant. Leo was good, but those two actors would have done a lot better I think. Too bad he's too old now to play the Joker; he'd do amazing things with that role.
+Jon Yu I think he would never accept this type of role...
I find that there's a difference in skill set between being a "movie star" (like Cruise and Clooney are) and being a method/character actor of the highest caliber, like DDL (and Bale and Oldman). Movie stars are, in some capacity, always playing themselves, while the character actors almost disappear into their roles.
Also DiCaprio, Al Pacino , Brando and De Niro are close to DDL but not better.
I find it incredible how he can hide his accent in his films. And I also find amazing the variety of his voice.
He didn't dedicate his Oscar. He dedicated a SAG award
Has anyone seen MY LEFT FOOT, he is brilliant in that too, also IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER. He is so brilliant. You know that he looses himself in his role because in reality he is so different from the characters he plays. That what real acting is. Some American actors can learn from this.
Daniel Day Lewis performance in There Will Be Blood was the greatest performance Ive ever seen...and Ive seen tons of films
Describes exactly why being an actor is so alluring; pure creation of another world
What I loved about this movie the most was the fact that I come from an oil family, my grandfather is a wellsite supervisor from days gone by who looks like plainview, has his mannerisms, and who anytime I spend time with seems to exude this dangerous callous energy of white mans old world. Day-Lewis made me feel that same way when I saw this movie. Masterful.
same daniel day lewis made the role so believable really came to life
That story was almost as long as the film.
Really? (Barely) 5 lines of text? You are the poster child for ADHD.
Robert Stauffer It was a joke actually... BUT I have long suspected that I have ahdh.
Man, it's hard to believe that charming man was also Daniel Plainview. That is what truly amazes me about good acting.
you have a lot of good actors, you have some great actors, you have a few extraordinary actors, you have Daniel Day-Lewis
He's such a sweet man.Hard to believe he played hard core caracters such as bill the butcher or daniel plainview.
This film is an absolute masterpiece.
it's literally impossible for me to imagine how a man can go from what i just saw in the video to the man i saw in the film There Will be Blood.
and that is a sign of an absolutely incredibly skilled actor
I love his voice !!
The Best Actor of ALL TIME. Don’t deny.
amazing acting, with that being said, as someone who is now convinced that many actors are under spirit possession when playing there roles, it makes his answers, especially that last one, make so much sense.
Yet she asks interesting questions and gives a good interview.
One of the most intelligent and best actors of the Century.
Best actor in the world.. I adore Daniel, he's simply astounding.
This is the greatest actor i've ever witnessed (no disrespect to past era's).
there will be blood is one of the most great movies of our time, the cast, the acting, the directing, the photography, the script... really great movie
Much respect to DDL. Thanks for uploading this.
Talented sure, but this man is also eloquent and articulate. He's a genius on screen and a gentleman off it.
The scene in TWBB where he looks upon the firey oil strike which illuminates his faces gives me goosebumps. I loved this movie and ALL of his work. Entirely
What a brilliant actor.
Best actor in the world.

I think he puts the best performance in history in this movie...I love deniro and others...but Daniel puts on a classic and epic performance here.
this act in this movie was totttaaaaly fantastic and fearly goooood-
If you told me Daniel Day Lewis has someone dub his lines in movies, I would believe you. His voice is nothing like Bill The Butcher's. Tone, pronunciation, pitch, tempo...not to mention the entire accent. Remarkable, really.
I ❤ DANIEL VERY MUCH, HE'S PERFECT, HE'S THE MAN OF MY DREAMS💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘
The GOAT.
I have abandoned this film. I then woke up and realised how great this film was.
This guy is awesome, no doubt about it
I've seen some criticisms about this film and how they're saying it's a disgusting film. I don't get it. It's a like-for-like of how it was back then.

My favourite actor, hands down.
Don't you leave us Daniel.. We need you acting !! 😢
I love this Daniel Day-Lewis in the interview, but I'm jealous of the Daniel Day-Lewis in the movie There Will Be Blood. He is the eldest son of the God of Acting!!
What intelligent, mature, and thought-provoking responses he produces.
I❤that, I'll have to improve my English if I want to have a date with him one day...🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Awesome actor
wow i love Daniel, he is great! He is such a good actor!
I love how he says "I" instead of "he" when he speaks about playing Daniel Plainview as though he was that person. incredible
One of the greatest actors of our generation. Such intensity. Extremely talented.
One of my favorite actors.... I love him in Gangs of New York and The Last of the Mohicans
He's incredible. I am watching Gangs of New York this very evening.
even when he talks about his character or says the same words Plainview said like Quail for example, it's like he's talking about an entirely different person.. but it was HIM all along! His performance was like a magic trick. No one knows how or what he had to do to disappear into Plainview and everyones amazed

he is amazing, just amazing
Brilliant Actor 👏❤

this man is among the best actors of all time
incredible actor !!
Classy gent.
Amazing performances all by Daniel Day-Lewis. Can't wait to see his fifth Oscar nominated performance as Lincoln.
he is one of the handful of actors that actually deserves every penny of the millions of dollars he got
DDL is a kind of person that will be declared "insane" if he lived centuries ago... i mean that as a compliment. he's a GENIUS!!!!
just with how he speaks, the interviewer ask simple questions, and yet DDL answer it like he's life depended on it. he choose his words carefully. such a gentlemen, the best actor today(sorry Sean, as great as you are today, DDL still beats you)
I know it's a rash claim, but I genuinely think his performance in There Will Be Blood might be the best in history.
by far the most talented actor ever.
He's channeling John Huston. Easily one of the greatest performances I've ever seen.
wow ! His last words are so powerful
well this is the greatest of all .. he is definitely the best performer .. and he deserves all milkshakes !
Best Actor of his generation, by quite some way. In a relatively weak generation of leading men DDL stands out as one of the few who is willing to completley immerse himself in a role.
I wish he dressed like his character
HAHAHAHA XD I was thinking the exact same thing
Just unbelivable. Somewhere Brando is shaking his head in amazment. Greatest living actor, bar none! Just a shame like the wonderful director Terrence Malick he only does a movie once a blue moon. His performance in this movie was absolutely captivating. And I never use that word lol
So weird how he can go from his accent to his character in TWBB, such a good actor

just one of a kind
He.Is.Beautiful. That is all.
YESSSS. I have often thought about!
His father was an incredibly famous poet. Cecil Day-Lewis was actually Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom until his death in 1972.
@brushstrokesrock Possibly the best of his generation. If you watch him in "Gangs of New York", "In the Name of the Father", and "There Will be Blood", it's almost hard to imagine you're watching the same guy in all three.
GENIUS
LEGEND
ICON
ABSOLUTE GOD
what an actor
yeh amazing even the ensemble
This man is ACTING SYNONYM :)
so sweet and down-to-earth would love to have him as a neighbour
hard to believe that a soft spoken man like him can play psychos like bill the butcher!
The way he speaks about finishing a movie sounds a bit like finishing a romantic relationship.
@shaboopie12
I agree, he deserved DOUBLE of whatever he made from that film. Then again, DDL is too classy to be caught up in money. His motivation is to contribute to his craft.
He has a beautiful Londonian accent. A true master of his craft.
At the end he explained his intense method acting. Really interesting, since it's something one have heard of him being famous for: not getting out of his charachter on the set. A great actor.

I hear he and paul Thomas Anderson are going to work together again I hope soon
:)
How do you feel about it now
It's called Phantom Thread
I'm not surprised that the hardest part was finishing it.
Fancied him from his first ever film. Or at least the first film I saw him in.
