Bytom is a nice city with lots of character and good archtecture. The ony thing is it was badly run down and exploited by heavy mining. There were 15 coal mines in the city limits. This caused numerous local earthquakes and erosion. The roads, buildings and the whole infrastructure was extensively affected by it. The state and the counscil have been making some investments in the recent years as the mining industry is almost dead in the city and the transition process has been started. You need to come back in a few years. Despite the vast devastation due to mining Bytom still looks better that Detroit that I visited in the past as a student. I am sure Detroit is more depressing in comparison to lovely and slowly recovering Bytom. I like your honest account on your visit to the city however it really bothers me that you expect everyone to speak English to you while you are in Poland where Polish is an official language. You should adjust and not the oposit.
