My friend, Rand Silverman, and I were Kings season seat holders for many years and were there when Gretzky joined the team. We went to this game in Edmonton. It was our second time going to Edmonton. We went to all the Kings home, games and several road trips including Calgary, Winnipeg, New York, and New Jersey. I've never been to an arena that was so quiet; it was like being in a church. you couldn't take beers to your seats. You can hear the puck slide on the ice.
WOW WHAT AN OVATION FOR WAYNE GRETZKY THAT AND THE STANDING OVATION FOR WAYNE GRETZKY WHEN THE OILERS RETIRED HIS NUMBER IN 1999 WAS UNBELIEVABLE IT WAS GOOD FOR THE OILERS FANS TO GIVE THAT OVATION I FELT BAD FOR THE POOR DUDE THAT HAD TO SING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM AFTER THAT OVATION
I just remember wanting Mark Messier to bury Wayne...I became a bigger Oiler fan once Wayne left, and whenever Wayne played the Oilers as a LA King, I wanted the Kings slaughtered. But to caveat me, I hate all LA teams...

God he had to be uncomfortable skating around getting that kind of ovation in a strange way.
For 7 years he got that kinda reaction in that same building. Probably felt like just a regular game at that moment.
