Release is the second album from Elskavon, the ambient moniker of Minneapolis composer Chris Bartels. This collection of songs continues on the path where the late 2012 debut album Movements In Season ended, with large, lush atmospheres and open textures.
Ambient music has always been able to create opportunities for listeners to interpret emotions in a variety of ways, and any one song can mean something so different from one set of ears to the next. For Chris, inspiration for these songs arrives in a similar fashion. It comes from all sorts of angles - love and friendship, hope and doubt, life and death.
Residents of Minnesota know the drastic difference of the four calendar seasons all too well. Summer in the "land of 10,000 lakes" is overwhelmingly beautiful, while winter is, to say the least, frigid. While certainly bound to be diverse in interpretation, Release was originally inspired by the many Minnesota winters Chris has experienced. It is the first of a double album. A 'spring' version will follow, after a predictably chilled few months.
The album opens with the expansive, airy four-and-a-half minute crescendo titled "We Can All Be New." The listener is encouraged to become lost in the grand calm of spacious vocals, guitars, and sampled atmospheres. This leads to an immediate transition with the second track, "Small Hands," which was written in anticipation of Chris' and his wife's first child, who will join them in the spring. The simple piano piece is reminiscent of any number of calming neo-classical songs or minimalist film scores.

Perfectly fine Ambient music. Re-writing the definition and rendering the term "Classical Music" by misapplying it to music of other genres -- to the point "Classical Music" becomes meaningless does not upgrade an already good Ambient genre set of pieces.
If only they added a little "faint" percussion in the background - this would be perfect.

This is very nice and relaxing, but, for once, I would want some "acoustic" ambient.
Acoustic as in, guitar (acoustic OR electric), drums and piano and maybe non-lyrical vocals.
Can someone recommend something of that kind to me?
RUclips is crammed with "ambient" music but all I can find is either GIaA-style post-rock or trippy new-age synth ambient.

Ehhh....that Guns of Glory advertising with Adrian von Ziegler music.
It isn't really ambient... And it's hard to listen to on low volume, as ambient music should be listened to, because of large intervals between the piano sounds... I'd add some background, then everything would work out just fine. The music seems to lack at least one important track. Otherwise - it's good.

I disagree, coming from someone who is an avid listener of Ambient Music. Everyone has their one unique tastes.
@@Void_Dweller7 I compose ambient music. This is literally like following formulas. There's no originality. It's still good music, but if you listen carefully with a critical mindset, you'll realize it's the same kind of typical ambient sounds.
@@Void_Dweller7 But you're right. To each their own taste. Not here to judge you or anyone. Just technically speaking, this album is lacking a bit more brainstorming. This is actually what the music industry is suffering from lately, a lack of creativity, and the quantity-driven automation and mass production at the cost of quality. Music just ceased to come from expression as it used to (although there still some). It's all numbers and clickbait titles and catchy backgrounds in the age of youtube.
